Here is the issue here: Neither parent saw an issue with Nancy having relations with any of her men in that same guesthouse (although they did in the episode that led to her finally getting her own apartment). With this said, I also see Kate and Doug’s point of view. It IS their home. Willie pays no rent, no bills, buys no groceries. So it’s their house rules. yay for Kate! she FINALLY stood up to her bratty son. and screw Doug for telling her to back down! This episode makes me flipping mad. From Audrey sniveling at Buddy and giving her ultimatums, to dumb cluck clumsy annoying Shelley Long refusing to understand and admit that her behavior was disrespectful to Kate, to bratty Willie acting spoiled and entitled as usual, to Doug having the balls to tell Kate that Willie "can't back down, unfortunately" and she is going to have to.....there's enough in this episode to make me want to spit nails .
The problem with Willie here is that, he wants it both ways. They should absolutely Not go into Kate's kitchen, half dressed and take food to top it off. What nerve. He says his house, okay, but the kitchen in the main home is not "his" house. The writing here is off for Willie's character. Later episodes often have the characters doing things and saying things that are just Not them.
I would never have gotten away with the way these kids talk to the parents on this show, and if you want to be treated as an adult and live in the guest house than buy your own food at least, you send your sex partner over in your parent's kitchen wearing nothing but your shirt to get some food, well only on tv would the parents have to apologize for not being hip enough, lol
0:29, I can't believe she opened her letter at the box then stuck the trash and other letters in the box and only brought her letter back to the house! 🤣🤣 WTF!
Lots of wrongs here, but I blamed Joan the most. As a guest in Kate's house, she pushed a relationship on Willy. Though he isn't without blame, some respect was due Kate and the rest of the household and he and Joan went too far, too soon. So says this dinosaur. Kate is a better and more forgiving woman than I am.
Why did people drink coffee all day and night back then? 2 consenting adults Im all for but WOW...who jumps in bed with a virtual stranger? I did love this show back in the day.
... It's much worse now. Most of my younger co-workers (I'm 43 and ancient) drink coffee all day long just to stay awake. They also spend lots of money buying it instead of making their own.
I agree on both counts.... The coffee madness and the quick hook up between the Harp lady and Willie... But then again it was pre Aids, and I guess what they say about the Swingin' Seventies is true... Lol, I just remembered the character Larry, from three's company, and his cheesy pickup lines at the Reagle Beagle.... Cringe worthy!
I think Willie and Joan were way out of line here. First of all, the house (including the guest house) belongs to Doug and Kate….not to Willie; and as the owners of the property as well as the parents, they have every rite to set the rules for what goes on and what doesn’t on their property! The way Willie spoke to his parents should have earned him a boot in the ass and an eviction from the property! As far as Audrey, she’s a horrible friend to Buddy! She’s self centered and childish! Instead of being happy for Buddy and congratulating her, she selfishly gave Buddy an unrealistic ultimatum. I’m glad Buddy finally had that talk with her, and I’m glad that Audrey finally realized she was in the wrong.
Not in my house! This is one thing my parents would not allow. Trends and times change but they should never have expected others to accept what they do. Willie talked about being a man but not secure enough to have his own house paying his own bills, living off his parents but expecting the privileges of an adult. Casual sex has been one of the reasons for so many disappointed people. If Joan had her own place, why was she there in the first place and why didn't they just go to her place when asked to behave. This may have just been a story but happens a lot.
She didn't live close enough to pop over to her place, that's why she was staying the night. But just because Kate liked her enough to have a music performance, don't mean she liked her enough for her son, even just casually.
@@jessicaholland2830 The cottage was very nice. It seemed a good transition place between living with the parents and living in your own place. Nancy has her own apartment now so Willie moved in and eventually he'll move to his own apartment just in time for Buddy to take the cottage. It's a nice place and I can imagine living there.
He's ok looking. I like his curly hair. But I have always gone for dark hair. He reminds me of the comic strip character "Dustin" in his still living at home at his age, and his inability to stick to one job or career, just flitting from job to job. Unlike Willie though, Dustin can't get a date to save his life. Women like guys with jobs, not losers who can't even support themselves let alone a wife and potential children.
Willy sleeps with everybody! And Shelly Long kissed him after they knew each other for five minutes. No build up. And that was ridiculous that she raided Kate's fridge like a teenager. If Willy is so grown up, why doesn't he have his own food.
@4:27 It's starting to look like Harpo suggested staying over at the house specifically to make her moves on Willie!! Oh Diane, I am SO disappointed. What would Sam and Frasier think??

Audrey treats other ppl like crap but expects Buddy to bow to her every step of the way. Shes such a pull. And Kate has every reason to be upset. Willie's "hook up" sneaking in Lates kitchen for midnight snacks. Thats crazy. Even in 2024 that would be unacceptable
@@Iworkwithnitwits David had his own apartment throughout the show. Mary still lived at home but she was in med school so that made sense. @@priscillasalzberg5349 she's a dopey 15 year old. And her parents are a couple of retards. The sorority rejected her so all those witches became her instant enemies. Needy people see the world that way if you're not with me, you're the enemy. And she and Buddy had been best friends since forever. So for Buddy to join the enemy for no good reason except to feel included was seen as an act of betrayal. The way Audrey sees it is that Buddy should be like if those witches don't want my best friend then I don't want them. Audrey didn't have a lot of friends and people want to feel valued. In the end Audrey went and said it's fine if you join them but I don't blame her for hating them and feeling like she was thrown under the bus for these new people.

Buddy agreed and so she turned them down. Then Audrey said ok join them if you want. Buddy proved her loyalty by dumping those witches but she still got to in the end
I thought it was unrealistic for Buddy to be trying so hard to get into a sorority. I mean, tea parties and fancy dresses? Since when are those Buddy's things? To me she seemed like a sporty gal who pretty much got along with everyone and was popular and a good athlete...why would a girl like that want to be part of an exclusive group of girls who exclude others, especially her best friend? This storyline was too much of a stretch.
For context, TV stations used to show Marx Brothers movies every week back in the 70s. They were popular with high school and college kids who knew all the characters and routines.
Even if he is paying rent, that was his mother's guest. He should have at least waited until the two of them had their recital and then he could have called the girl and asked for a date. I doubt anybody would have had a problem with that.

Agree with you about what trash Willie and Diane are, disagree about dear Audrey
Never heard of a sorority in HS before .
And expecting Kate to cook pancakes and bacon
I would never have gotten away with the way these kids talk to the parents on this show, and if you want to be treated as an adult and live in the guest house than buy your own food at least, you send your sex partner over in your parent's kitchen wearing nothing but your shirt to get some food, well only on tv would the parents have to apologize for not being hip enough, lol
0:29, I can't believe she opened her letter at the box then stuck the trash and other letters in the box and only brought her letter back to the house! 🤣🤣 WTF!
Miss this show😣
Joining a sorority seems totally out of character for Buddy.
I thought so too
Oh my gawd this brought back memories lol..I mean the phone that is..can you get off I need it 🤭
Same :-)
Buddies jealous friend is just too much.
No Kate! You should not have backed down. The kids were out of line. Showed no respect, so none deserved. From a 21st Century dinosaur. ROOOOAAARR!!!
...Willie & the young lady should've exercised some discretion if not restraint.
Justin Aames it’s fiction
@@shelley6477 ...Ya think?
Justin Aames nice way to “exercise restraint”
@@shelley6477 ...There's a block/mute function. Please use it, I already have...So long.✋
I seem to remember though that Nancy had more than one or two guys stay in the guest house with her. Kate never told her not to.
Willie needed to tell her to wait until the recital was over and then they could go out on a date properly. Horrible behaviour from both of them.
She should’ve stuck to her guns… Kate… A little too forgiving to the mooching son
Kate and Doug are so terrified to have their kids move out and move on that she is willing to have her adult son disrespect and abuse her
Kind of like the Ewing boys treated Miss Ellie and Jock on Dallas.
@@hoagie1978 kind of how Timmy treats his diapers
Kate is like Bobby Ewing, they both throw fits when they don't get their way and cant control people
"The harp hit the fan" :D
I miss this generation gap discussion and dynamic.
We lack for old fashioned values....
Oh, Jesus, here we go.....yaaaawwwwwwn....
Why did people drink coffee all day and night back then? 2 consenting adults Im all for but WOW...who jumps in bed with a virtual stranger? I did love this show back in the day.
Seriously… Coffee with lunch. Coffee after dinner. Coffee at three pm.
Better then smoking weed are vaping
... It's much worse now. Most of my younger co-workers (I'm 43 and ancient) drink coffee all day long just to stay awake. They also spend lots of money buying it instead of making their own.
@@bryanferguson4280 ...This is true.
I agree on both counts.... The coffee madness and the quick hook up between the Harp lady and Willie... But then again it was pre Aids, and I guess what they say about the Swingin' Seventies is true... Lol, I just remembered the character Larry, from three's company, and his cheesy pickup lines at the
Reagle Beagle.... Cringe worthy!
Monica girl, don't skip out on a "Bette Davis Double Feature!"
I agree. A visiting boyfriend/girlfriend should sleep on the spare bed and not with their partners.
Watching as a mom of boys is sure different than watching this as a young girl in the 70’s.
Why put off until tomorrow...? I quite agree.
👍🏽💯😊
That’s crazy! Meet and sleep together same day. Weird! Glad I missed that episode.
Audrey always played the victim. Joan betrayed Kate by sleeping with Willie.
The show in itself is a learning lesson. It’s about discussion, learning and communication.
Why not get a motel room? Kate said she prefered that they did.
I never understood why all these ladies fall for Willie...
I dunno….blonde-haired and goofy?
And he lives with his parents, even though it’s the guest house. And why did Nancy live there too. Can’t these “kids” grow up and leave the house?
He wasn't cute, too skinny, goofy, bit pompous, ugly hair.
The writers always seem to make Kate so cultured with her love of the performing arts. I like to think she would know to shout "Brava!"
You read my mind.
All of these intense moral debates in the comments and not one person has said it. It's Diane from CHEERS!!!!
I couldn't help noticing Carol from the Brady Bunch Movies.
Someone did mention Diane cheating on Sam - Cheers reference haha.
Actually, it has been alluded to, but I think it's because everybody already knows and chose not to celebrate the obvious like you just did.
Lol! That was funny.
I always thought Willie was in his 30's during the series.
Just thinking about him mentioning going to the movies ... no VCRs
no screaming - movies were a big deal still even old ones
Willy sleeps with everybody! And Shelly Long kissed him after they knew each other for five minutes. No build up. And that was ridiculous that she raided Kate's fridge like a teenager. If Willy is so grown up, why doesn't he have his own food.
Well, the producers named his character "Willy", which adds up and makes perfect sense. 😅
Annie is a very worldly child.
She's too grown
Great writers on this show
@4:27
It's starting to look like Harpo suggested staying over at the house specifically to make her moves on Willie!!
Oh Diane, I am SO disappointed.
What would Sam and Frasier think??
Does the guest house have a fridge, Or no one uses it😁?
Thank you..it has to have a refrigerated..this was just put in for the storyline OR maybe Willie doesn't keep his stocked bc he's always eating from the main house..whatever
I can’t believe l use to watch this as a child but it was normal to me people sleeping together. I seen a lot with people in my family. But l still love this show l always loved the mother. I wanted her as a mum. I just wanted a family like this.
Me too
Audrey treats other ppl like crap but expects Buddy to bow to her every step of the way. Shes such a pull. And Kate has every reason to be upset. Willie's "hook up" sneaking in Lates kitchen for midnight snacks. Thats crazy. Even in 2024 that would be unacceptable
Audrey was always jealous of Buddy!
Audrey always kills me when she cries 😂
did anyone else's high school have sororities? i thought they were only in college
I haven't heard of them in high school, ever.
I think they probably made this up for the program -- to cause friction between Buddy and Audrey.
I just despised Buddy and Joan's behavior in this episode. Kate, on the other hand, is a model Mom.
Buddy had every right to be mad! She should cuss Audrey out but Buddy never cusses.
Joan really came on to Willy. What’s a man to do??
Joan was totally throwing herself at Willie. Just sayin'....
He should have his own place he's an adult
Kind of like Grant Goodeve's character David Bradford on Eight is Enough. Too old to be staying with Mom and Dad.
@@Iworkwithnitwits David had his own apartment throughout the show. Mary still lived at home but she was in med school so that made sense. Joanie, Susan and Nancy were all living at home when they should have moved out. They were most like Willie in that sense.
But they weren't bringing an endless parade of men in.
The walton kids stayed at home...
@@yosemite735 It was the depression/WW2 and they were pretty poor.
Lol I agree guys but there are VERY FEW families that actually do like one another as people and rather have their kids stay at the family home until they do get married. I hope my son stays with us till he’s married cuz he’s my only and well the way the world is now I rather my son still be at home ashen he’s an adult than struggle like I’ve seen ALOT of young adults struggle.
Finally someone put Kate in her place. Doug was so sensible and smart.
That girl IS NOT A BEST FRIEND, SELF CENTERED AND SELFISH.
Buddy NEEDS to get rid of Audrey. In EVERY EPISODE Buddy has to lose something to keep Audrey. Audrey is not up to Buddy's par. Audrey is jealous too.
Audrey always does the right thing in the end
@@XxowendanxX Audrey does the wrong thing in the beginning. The very fact that she steals someone's intellect and insults someone else's hard efforts. The stress someone causes you that you will be punished.
I never thought to look at it that way. I figured Audrey was just ticked that she didn't get included. But I think you're right. Also, Audrey was afraid that she would lose Buddy's friendship.@@XxowendanxX
@sueyardley7489 both good people. Buddy wanted to join their group she didn't even know those people but they disrespected her best friend and she still wanted to join them so in Audrey's eyes that makes Buddy disloyal.
It was when she came in the kitchen to get snacks out of the main house when I agreed with mom
For context, TV stations used to show Marx Brothers movies every week back in the 70s. They were popular with high school and college kids who knew all the characters and routines.
"To Thine Ownself be True. "
In the context of the play it's a mere platitude uttered by the most superficial character.
It is on their property. Was Willie paying rent? I could only live in someone's guesthouse if i was paying rent.
Great show 🎥 🍿
Willie. What a loser. He'll end up like that character Will Farrell played. "MOOOOOM!! WHERE'S THE MEATLOAF?!!"
Joan is quite friendly 💕
Yeah too friendly.
@@Hunny1au Lol
Clumsy too.🤣
Yeah, she had the hots for Willie the minute she saw him and his nice little body.
I don’t think Kate needs to back down. Willie wasn’t paying rent
Even if he is paying rent, that was his mother's guest. He should have at least waited until the two of them had their recital and then he could have called the girl and asked for a date. I doubt anybody would have had a problem with that.
Kate, you say "Brava" to a woman and "Bravo" to a man!
Look at Mrs Lawrence pimpin out Willie!!😂😂🤣
Why doesn't Audrey's mother ever help her be more thoughtful, less selfish, more mature for her age?
Such a great show!
