  • A quick video on certain mods breaking saves and games. always remember to back up your saves if you can to prevent any losses.
    I'm not trying to bring any hatred or heat to the mod authors, just trying to inform the users and prevent issues.

    So hey, Veryified Creator here, figured I would weigh in and give some info. There's gonna be a TON of reports of mod XYZ breaking people's games recently, but it has nothing to do with the mods, or how they are built. We're currently experiencing what's called a soft cap. Most people can only get around 110 mods installed before their games go screwy. I've heard as low as 90 for some people, and some other lucky ones get up to 130-140 mods before it becomes unstable. Essentially, the data inside the mods gets fubared, things don't show up in game, scripts fail, crashes happen a lot more, etc. Our working theory on discord is it's a cache issue of some kind.
    Essentially, just be careful throwing shade at specific mods, because it could just be the soft cap, which isn't something they can control at all.
    Lastly, if you are having any trouble with a Creation, go to Nexus Mods, and search for the title of the mod. Most Creations are also uploaded through the Nexus, and you can leave bug reports and talk with other downloaders there. We're usually pretty happy to respond to people on the Nexus, even if they downloaded the Creations version.

      Awesome info, thank you! This is exactly why I don’t download everything I see and have limited myself to 30-40 mods at the moment.
      There’s always bugs that need to worked out, especially with how things run together. If you think about it creations has only been out about a month, so just give it more time

      This is unfortunately an issue with the previous games to implement the Creation Club as well. Too many plugins and it all just soils itself. It'll get sorted out..... eventually.
      Until then, keep your mods to a nice round 80, and make sure that each one is clean and optimally implemented.

      That is great information. We use XBox which unlike PCs, I assume, can limit what options we have to recover. I assume one issue is, no creator is going to be able to replicate the combination of mods people might have. I believe load order can be important and load order neutral isn’t always mentioned in the mod. Shouldn’t this be required?
      SkullyNBones is very responsive on the Reddit channel. My biggest fear is, the mods might work fine until there is a game update from Bethesda and then it suddenly breaks. Do moders get access to betas to test their mods?
      SkullyNBones has just announced she has had enough of fighting the Creators Kit. That is shame.

      Thanks for your response, and I was very hesitant to make this video. I initially checked online and seen people had the same issue as myself, I tried finding info to contact the creator before ultimately deciding on this video to try and help put others.
      I wasn't aware of the mod limit so I'm grateful for the information.

      So, to answer a couple of questions, we do not get access to new betas, but as a verified creator, I do sometimes get warnings as to what is coming. For instance, I knew that the INI files were going to be removed from uploads on Creation before it happened. We otherwise just get the same betas you guys do.
      We all believe the same, that the soft cap issue will get resolved. There's no evidence that it was part of any design, or that it was the result of any engine limitation. It's more likely an issue that slipped by because they would have had to have so many mods (More than they would have had in house to test with) before they'd have ever seen it.
      I personally have no experience with the mod you're showing here. It's more that I saw a ton of comments about people saying certain mods aren't working, and I would bet that at least a few of those are due to the soft cap, rather than any real issues with the mod. It's just something I wanted people to know before hand. If a mod is giving you issues, try disabling some other mods to see if it makes a difference, before assuming it's the mod itself.
      Oh, last thing, the soft cap cuts off at whatever point you go over, so it effects mods at the bottom of your load order first of course.

    Always looking up a mod on Nexus is sound advice. I've been doing so since skyrim first launched its mods, and other people's experiences has saved me a lot of headaches.

    From my experience with mods, your load order is going to make it or break it for you a lot of times. I had to perfect my load order back in the Fallout 4 days and I've incorporated the same methodology to my load order in Starfield. Now that I've gotten everything dialed in, the game doesn't crash anymore!

      I’ve heard about this too but naturally when Bethesda updated CK it messes up my load order every time which makes all the editing pointless 😕

    Hey, I hope everyone is doing well. Many thanks for all of the mods and work you guys put in.
    Don't know if Bethesda is aware of the issue we are currently dealing with regarding plugins count and limit in a functioning load order.
    I come from many years of modding F4 and Skyrim, and Starfield has been the hardest game to mod for me personally.
    Currently, I have played many playtroughs, and all begin to exhibit issues after 120 to 130 plugins. The type of plugins don't matter their size or their place in the load order. After a certain number of active plugins for me, 136 the game seems to be unable to load the rest of the plugins, resulting in most commonly geometries missing invisible clothing, ships, buildings or sometimes the game simply CTD or is hanging trying to load the plugins.
    I have had problem free playtroughs of 30-40 hours with 304 active mods, of which 127-136 are plugins. Anything added to the load order begins to break the game.
    The worst is that some issues might not be immediately spotted, like missing pieces in the ship builder or character creator not working, etc. We can barely get to 140 plugins at the moment if that.
    For example, I currently have 304 total mods, of which many are retextures, sound, ui, or utility mods that do not take/use an ESM, Medium ESM or Light ESM slot.
    ESP mods should be only used for test purposes while working with the ck.
    So out of my total mods 304 in my load order, only 137 of those mods use an ESM.
    The problem with the engine at the moment is that it can't process/load the 253 ESM's allowed, and the engine starts messing up once the number of ESM's exceeds in my case 137-140 ESM's
    The 253 master limit seems unreachable, and I'm not even talking about medium and light masters which are a mess right now.
    That leaves over a hundred ESM's slots that the game should be able to process but can't be loaded.
    The allowed ESM count should be 16×16 =256 with a few slots taken by Bethesda, leaving 253 or 252 might be wrong.
    Medium ESM's allowed count should be 16×16×16=4096.
    😆 🤣 😂 😹 but we can barely make about 130 or so work
    If there is some info on these issues, please let me know since I'm unable to find much info.

      I don’t even have that many mods installed and I’m having the issue mainly of clothing and spacesuits not loading in properly or planets have a place holder on them I think it’s a Bethesda issue

    My biggest issue is that the game crashes after browsing through the Creations on XBox. It doesn't do it right away but after 10 minutes or so the game will crash while browsing. I installed Skully's Emporium last night and didn't seem to have any issues after launching the game. One tip I picked up is that after installing a creation on Xbox is to quit the game then restart your console. I've been doing that and everything I've installed so far seems to be working.

      That seems to be a known bug tied to the creation. On pc, you have to delete a certain file to prevent the crashing. Hopefully, betheada improves the issues on both

    Skully's Emporium has worked perfectly fine for me for weeks now on Xbox. On Xbox, you have to disable the mod and restart. You don't have to adjust the save data.

      I wouldn't be too worried. Just make sure to download one mod at a time and test it our briefly. If you do run into any issue like what happens with the stellar armoury mod, you can fix it. it's just tedious

    Also, the maximum amount of mod you can have enabled on consul at once is 112. If you go over this, it won’t allow you to start a game and you can possibly break your game and need to re-download

    I wonder if the issues have to do with loot lists. I know this was a problem with early mods that messed with loot lists for Fallout 4. Mod authors eventually had to start using a seperate script to add items (particularly weapons and armor) to loot lists.

    The Enforcer pistol is broken also. It is one of the mods the bugs the audio and makes locations disappear like The Lodge.

    Im on series x, the 2 mods that broke the sound for me were starfinance, and bards outpost crew command. Hope this helps someone. ✌️

    Has anyone been getting issues with mods that 1. Stop you talking to vendors & 2. Space fights the enemy ships dont show up or are small broken bits flying around and u cant attack ?
    Had these two issues so many times. Any help would be great

      If you have over a certain number of mods installed, this is what will happen. Until Bethesda fixes this, the only thing you can do is reduce the number of mods installed until the issue goes away.

    It's good to save your order that is working in creations on xbox. So when you run into mods that mess up your game you can just delete the creation save and restore it in creations. You won't need to uninstall/install the game. Also disabling mods in creations and then booting the game with them off. Restarting the game and enabling the mods then starting your save should fix the audio and missing stuff bugs.

      See in the case if that stellar armoury mod, it won't let you delete it from thr creations tab ad it will just keep infinitely loading, meaning you have to go and find the specific mod file and delete it

    There is a way around it on PC. Create a second character profile for testing mods in your mod manager and your game in addition to your main one, but don't activate mods being tested in your main until you have verified that the new mod or mods won't cause problems.

    I heard there is a soft cap for mods right now so I’m hoping that BGS would fix that issue. Creations seem pretty damn buggy still if you are looking to get 10gb worth of mods. From sound bugs, soft caps, creations infinitely reloading, and even starfield just crashing when you get into the game on Xbox.

    One thing I really want to see from mod authors is whereabouts to put their mods in an Xbox load order, perhaps with a system from 1 to 10, with 1 being op of load order & 10 being at the very bottom, as trying to second guess a mods placement can cause all sorts of conflicts & crashes, even with several years of Fallout 4 mods use
    It isn't fun spending way to long constantly moving mods up & down the load order trying to overcome conflicts, getting a mod/mods to work as they should or even just trying to get them to work at all
    This is especially relevant for the larger mods that add a whole load of ship parts etc
    It's also about time BGS installed a mod manager in Starfield for Xbox players so that Xbox players can play Starfield instead of pissing around with their mod load orders when the game goes tits up due to a mod being in slightly the wrong place

      There IS a mod manager in Starfield; it's just nowhere near as easy to use as it could be because it's not in an obvious location like right on the main screen. They buried it in the Creations interface.

    another PSA. All of us who build mods are building them on PC and most of us do not have any XBOX to playtest them with. When you download mods on XBOX you have to consider yourself a beta tester.

    Tracker's Alliance sniper rifle will not reload. You have to change weapons in inventory, then change back to reload it. I put it away as a trophy. (PC)

    Yeah the place door anywhere really messes up ships on Xbox. Works in the ship design way but you'll never get into your ship. You'll just fall through tge floors and cielings like portals have been placed by the entrance.

    The problem with creations is on PC with nexus, if there is a known definite conflict between mods, a lot of the time one of the authors or another modder will make a patch to fix the issue.
    Bethesda chose not to allow this on creations. I have no idea why they did this. It wasn't like that for mods on xbox for fallout 4.
    So if you're on PC, chances are that will happen for this mod but it won't on creations.

      Many mod authors upload exclusively to Nexusmods, even though it has always been possible to also upload their mods to Bethesda. I doubt that will change any time soon.

      @@MatthewN8OHU check the numbet of mods voming to crestions each day, week or month. I actually had a moddrr pull aod off of necus and put it on crestions. It is now baked into my save and I cant get rid of it and it needs updating so it doesnt work.

      @@wolfhors3_660 That only applies to mods submitted to the Verified Creators program if you're planning on monetizing them, as far as I know. There are a number of free mods that are patches for other free or even paid creations on their site.

      That situation you'll have to disable each mod and enable them.one by one. I do know a lot of mods can cause that issue, though, as it seems to be a common issue with creations

    The mod "Darkstar Universe: Crossfire" can cost you a save.
    If you do the "boss fight" encounter and capture the ship, then use it, at some point it'll start calling itself a "watchdog". At that point when you exit the ship you still have the ship hud and can't interact with anything... and if you haven't hard saved in a while, it does it on all the autosaves.

    I'm being patient with what mods im willing to use just cause of how early we still are in Starfield mods. I only have cheat room, Increased ship size, more attach points and better part flipping.

      I'd say 99 per cent of mods won't cause any long-lasting issues and I wouldn't let tye 1 percent make you shy away.

      @@CrimsonFlyboy true but most are also just gimmicks right now anyway. What I'm really waiting for is good companion mods like Skyrim's Inigo and Fallout 4's Heather. Also waiting for some good quest mods.

    Theres a mod that lets you have weapons on your back by replacing the jet pack. It caused all the audio in the game to become muted, I restarted the game and nothing. I restarted my xbox and still nothing happened. Once I deleted it everything the audio came back.

    I haven't had any problems yet. Then again, I am only running a handful of them. About half of those are Bethesda mods like the Blackout textures.

    Idk what mod is causing this but everytime i start a new game barrets ship doesnt land in vartera and some ships that i fight in my other profile are missing textures. You can just see the inside of the enemy ship

    Another issue seems to be that updating mods seems to be broken atm. I recently came across a juicehead vid stating the case, and advised to delete the mod and reinstall instead or directly updating.

    The creations loading bug on Xbox is a pain in the cheeks. The audio loss bug makes you turn them off and on and reload the game pain but OK the Creations loading bug has caused me to delete and reinstall all my mods like 25 times before I make my list more vanilla friendly. All the darkstar mods and a few others. Peace

      Instead of deleting your mods just disable them all restart game you’ll have sound back and then enable your mods you’ll still have sound that’s what I do and saves loads of time

    I'm so worried about this that so far I've only installed two mods that are official and inform you that it's lore friendly. I'm on xbox with bad internet and I really don't want to break my first ever playthrough.

    Most of the problems come from having two mods that are trying to do the same thing . This is where using mods from Nexus is a much better option . There's a bug reporting system and a comment section and a lot more information about the mods . NMM will tell you if you have a missing master by marking any esm's that won't function properly as red . Hopefully they release the edit tools that we have for Fallout and the Elder Scrolls . And make it so that loot can work with this game . I don't know maybe they have already made loot work but I doubt it . Skyrim is what 13 years old , and if you do a fresh install you'll still end up with about 20,000 dirty edits . I wouldn't be surprised to find out that there is a million dirty edits in this game . The random generator regularly just goes completely out of order . The last time I went through unity . Every single artifact that I found in my next playthrough was in the exact same cave . Different planets slightly different looks to them but the same cave for every single artifact . I have found other times where I got the same Temple over and over again just on different planets . I don't even have 60 mods in my game . And I regularly have to quit out to desktop and then go back in the game in order to get things to happen the way they're supposed to . Probably my fault because I have about 10 different shipbuilding mods .

      Not everyone has access to the nexus. Xbox doesn't, and to be honest, while nexus has a lot more mods. You also have to do a lot more to get them working Which is why a lot of pc use the built-in creations since you don't have to do very much, just install the mod

    I think that there are lots of really talented mod creators, but I do wish that they would properly test the mods they create.
    I’m on XboxSX and have found three mods so far that were recommended, but they cause issues and one mod is mission breaking (You can’t complete the mission because of missing items).
    I do hope that one day I see mod creators taking over one of these thousands of desolate planets and adding something really fascinating and exciting.😊

    Skullys emporium works fine for me on my Xbox so my be that you need to download skullys loot too or it’s not liking another mod

    matillija aerospace, broke my game, deleted my companion and jetpack, my saves that day, it did leave me 15 mil credits and 350 digipicks though

      Even on pc, I had issues with that mod causing fps drops when in the menu. While a cool mod, I opted to uninstall for safety

    I haven't had any issues with Skully's Emporium, been using the updated version for a while now, got my ships and outpost decorated with it. 🤷🏼‍♂️

    The Random Creature and Robot Size mod will almost freeze/crash your game. It can drop your fps into the low single digits when entering the Red Devils HQ on Mars. It creates a GIANT terramorph in an enclosed environment that the Starfield engine is unable to handle.

      Yeah, I hav the non robot version of this mod spawn the big terrormorph, but I didn't have any issues on pc.

      A lot of the creators were/are on Nexus so it's worth looking up the mod and username jic.

      That's very true. But players shouldn't be required to jump through hoops. Bethesda needs to improve the creations menu to allow similar functionalities as nexus

    I don’t know what mod I have installed but my game save files keep crashing. I’m really beginning to hate that no matter what game it is…. It’s broken!

      Best thing to do is disable each mod, and enable them one at a time and see if you can get the game to crash, if you can you will then know which mod causes the issues

    Could the Star Born Gravis armor from the Bethesda section crash your game as well? Ever since this update came out, my game stutters, and crashes for no reason and without any warning. That is the only mod I have, and I have an RTX 4090 and the ssd drive is not even half full yet, also my ping is at 1 with 0 jitter.

      It realistically shouldn't, specially with those specs, but if that's all upu really have I'd disable it and see if you notice any improvement

    Do you think verified creator’s mods 100% won’t break the game? Just wondering because there must be a reason why they have a tick on their profile, and if they’re mods won’t break, I might just focus on their mods.

      They shouldn't no, but I'd be cautious of using 2 mods that may conflict

    I have only about a half dozen mods from when they first came out.. the only problem I have (being on the Xbox) is that I used to be able to have about 30 saves, and now I get a space warning after 7 saves and I have had to delete the rest. Do the MODS really add that much "stuff" to the save games?

      That's an issue with the xbox in general. it's not really a mod issue. You'll need to clear your cache

    I downloaded the deluxe dynamic boostpack mod, it was a verified mod. So i assumed it was safe to use. Now my boostpack is so powerfull it launches me 100 meters into the air and i die on landing, no way to disable it. Tried uninstalling the mod, disabling it. Removing it. Even uninstalled the game and reinstalled. Nothing works. The game is unplayable now. Im never going to install mods ever again

      What tier of boostpack are you using. Because at tier 2 and higher you can't die from full damage. I had a similar issue with the super high boost but that was because I had previously installed a different boost pack mod and they conflicted

    In terms of getting your game to function after major issues I know it's hackneyed but since you didn't mention doing it, don't forget to try to repair your install from Steam if the game refuses to boot.
    Edit: It might be worth doing a vid about some of the common pitfalls with mods, even on PC. Some of the mods specify in their description for example that they need a new save game or have issues with uninstalling once in your save game. For people using mods from Nexus they may also grab mods that use additional loaders like SFSE. People need to remember those mods will be dependent on the loader and you'll generally find yourself waiting for it to be updated (in addition to any mod updates) any time the game is updated. Usually it's quick but not always so it can be an unwelcome surprise if you aren't aware.

    For me on Xbox, there is something that makes starfield just stop playing any sounds/music when I have mods installed, and the only solution I found is to reinstall starfield

      That seems to be a known issue with all creations. Hopefully, betheada can fix it in their next parch

    Luckily only had game crash and got rid of the mod that did it and another was disabling sound on Xbox. Some problems look device dependent too. Best method is enable 1 mod at a time, test it out then move on.

    I can confirm, on Xbox, I had to delete 5 days of saved data….. many hours I’ll never get back. As a producer of a radio show and a business owner, free time is extremely rare… I don’t think I’ll ever download another mod, paid or free.

    I play on xbox, the only issue I have with mods is the sound disappearing, and this happens with official mods.
    I've just got into the habit of quiting to main menu and turning off creations at end of the game.As I have sound issues if I leave creations enabled.

      The sound issue seems to be tied to a bug with the creation kit in general

      I'm mot really adept on that sort of thing. In regards to creations, simply deleting them from the ingame menu should remove them

    Ive tested on my system. Skully's Emporium works fine on my PC but it IS the mod that is causing me to delete the catalog text file if I actually want to access creation club.

      @@CrimsonFlyboy The exact cause is unknown to me. For example, it could be another mod I have that conflicts with Skully's Emporium and perhaps Skully's might work fine by itself.
      As you and others have mentioned it's a good idea to be patient and deliberate when installing mods. If you just add 20 mods willy nilly you might just be adding a lot of frustration to your life.

    The Enforcer pistol mod nuked the sound initially. With the 1.2 version it works great on series S now. Ship mods with stairs are ok if you don't have any ship crew, they won't use the stairs. As for load order, it's a crap shoot. You can use your modding experience with other Bethesda games as a VERY rough guide, but Starfield is a whole different critter. Hopefully between Microsoft and Bethesda they can kinda smooth things out. Not gonna hold my breath though.

    I thought mods on creations can't depend on another mod. If it needs the patch to work then it shouldn't even be on creations. Am I wrong?

      No, they can depend on other mods. It won't let you enable mods if you don't have the required file

      @CrimsonFlyboy hmmm, I've seen other vids that said uf a creation mods gets patched you can't update it, you have to reinstall the new version. I've also heard SFSE isn't available on creations and mods that depend on ut aren't allowed, also that, say, you.make a mod that adds something to another mod isn't allowed either. Am I misinformed? Where can I see the modder/bethesda agreement and rules without jumping thru the hoops to be a Beth modder?

    The manufacturing food and manufacturing meds mods creations crash my game and I’ve tried several times to install them and at different times. It’s definitely those two mods that caused my game to crash so unfortunately I can’t use them. Just a heads up anybody having problems who has those mods installed.

    The only I've had on xbox is one of the mods, and I don't know which one, spawns 40-50 Gal Bank transports around the three main planets, making my frame rate drop to about 10 fps. I've seen other people online have the same issue, but I haven't been able to find if anyone had found out which mod it is or if there's a fix.

    Well done, usefull report, I found other dangerous mods, there is a way to have a common page where we can share these braking game mods? ...but to be honest Skully' s emporium works perfectly on my xbox...so we need to be sure of what we say and do.

    Lots of them do. My issue is when I delete the file that I need to do to get the RELOADING...bug I have to reinstall the mods. But by doing that it recreates the list that I have to delete again. Probably not going to play until Bethesda fixes that.

      That bug means one of your mods is causing the same issue as the stellar armoury. That's why you need to be careful as to which one you install. I had to wipe my game twice because I didn't realise which mod was causing the issue

      You need to press window and, type %appdata% click back to go to app data then local, scroll to starfield and delete the contentcatalog txt

    managing the Load Order is important, take note of any mod description that says where it should be loaded. Some mods like the Unofficial patches will be automatically locked to the top but otherwise you will need to place them manually.

      Bethesda should make moders say if the mod is load neutral. Some do say they are, but it should say if they are not.

I would have given up once I saw the interface. I would love to see a video with a creator talking through the process of making a mod, the pros, the cons the difficulties.

      If you're on pc. You need to find the local app data folder and find starfield then delete the creation txt file

    A lot of the times it’s just user error. Mods conflict with other mods to do the same thing usually. I’m on Xbox and I can tell you right now Scully‘s mod is not causing anything I’ve uninstalled and installed it several times throughout my thousand hour play through and it has caused zero issues. It’s gotta be a conflict. I have about 130 250 mods on my Xbox and it runs like a top. You gotta do the research

    I had problems (an entire character saves all corrupted) with the bard’s outpost mods, but I’m quite sure it was a load order problem more than the mods, again it’d be very useful to have a video explaining the categories where to put mods so they work right

    There is some mods that won't allow you to start new game. It just infinity start never gonna start a new game.

      Some mods can tweak the individual game files to do stuff like that. I made the mistake of downloading a mod that made it so I could place ship parts anywhere.

    so far playing this game is like driving an electric car with 30miles range left and your nearest charge station is 80 miles away when your projection killawatts showed you can reach it, your saved files is not guaranteed, if you're a new player like me and you're thinking about trying or playing this game expect to magically lost 20hrs to 100 plus hours of gameplay, if you value your time and piece of mind avoid this game

    The soft cap is nonsense!!! I've had nothing but problems and am barely able to play the game since the creations kit dropped. Despite the load order, once you get up to around 5-7 gb's worth of mods, the game crashes. This is by far the best-worst game and worst-best game ever made. 🙄😒😑😪😆
