- Following a recent online incident, which highlighted some of problems our hobby has around inclusion, I decided to share my thoughts on the subject. If you do want to comment, please keep comments civil.
If you are interested in seeing Shaun's amazing layout in action, take a look at his RUclips channel just here: / @moderndti

Well put. Thank you for your clear eyed take The British Railroader. I would like to think the model worlds we are trying to make are in our mind better than the world we have. The more people who get a chance to make their own model worlds the better.
@@este_Pandy_Projects thank you. It is something I am passionate about
Very well said!!! Here at Model Railroad Talk, I support this whole heartedly! Thank you for the great message and video!
Thank you for putting this video together. It was very well stated, and we can all do better! Cheers!
@AndyDorsch no worries mate. Needed to be said.
Our hobby must be growing. We must be as the hobby is now starting to reflect some of the bad traits shown elsewhere in our society.
I was lucky to be in a club that has always held the view that the hobby is for all people. In the early days, a number of the wives joined and several are still active in the hobby. We even had a transgender member (she changed gender after joining the club) and she was always just another member. I know several members stood up for her involvement when we had a visitor make derogatory remakes - that visitor was told to leave and not come back.
Unfortunately, we, as a society, appear to becoming very polarised over many issues, especially over gender, and it is sad to see those attitudes seeping into our hobby. We should all do as much as we can to stop this from damaging our hobby. Thank you for your video.
@ericcoughlan no problem and thank you for sharing your experiences. It sounds like you and your society have been proactive in your support of others. I wish everybody showed your level of support. Keep up the good work 👍
Well said. I completely agree. This is the hobby for everyone.
Absolutely, there is no place for small mindexness and exclusion
Bravo Steve! Everyone has something to offer to the hobby.
We all do. It is what I love about our hobby
Steve, thank you for taking the time to make this video. I too have been called woke, I wear it as a badge of honour. Both Sally and my grand-daughter work with me on our model railroad and love it. Last summer when we visited the North Norfolk Railway, somebody who saw Sally filming remarked how great it must be to have a spouse who is into trains. That was positive and nice to hear.
@clivewilkinson6076 we can all be Woke together. It is also great when you can share your hobby
well said I agree with you ON everything you said and I WILL share this video around so more people can see it!
@@NWRfan thank you so much
There should be no room for discrimnation in our hobby. Except, of course, against those that don't model in my favourite scale, country, region, railway and era!!! 😍😍😮😮
@@henrybest4057 I will let you have that one
Don’t forget about Stacey Walthers and Karen at Soundtraxx who have been leading two major companies.
@HumancityJunction thanks for the reminder. There are a lot of amazing people in the hobby and industry and not all of them fall into the majority
Spot on! There’s too many, to put it as politely as possible, self-appointed gatekeeper old farts who actively prevent people from joining the hobby. They bemoan the lack of youth in their organizations or clubs yet do everything to exclude younger men or women. One other prominent RUclipsr got a comment on one of his videos expressing surprise that not only did he have a girlfriend but she even enjoys his train layout! I wonder how they would feel if they knew that gay men were coming to their train shows and actively modelling. That kind of exclusionary attitude is what can drive people away from the hobby. For if you don’t accept the people who have meaning in my life, be they women, gay, straight, or somewhere else on the spectrum, then you don’t accept me.
@Quince828 absolutely right. We should be able to be who we want and enjoy what we do without fear.
A hobby is for all, not just for some.
My wife has no interest in the hobby, but came with me to York show last year, which was really nice. Unfortunately, whilst I was looking at one of the trade stands the trader made comments to her about buying make-up that made her feel uncomfortable, and that she shouldn't have been there with me. It was totally unnecessary and really quite rude, and a classice bit of "leave the wife shopping" misogyny. Happily, she's coming with me to this years show as well, but I can see how these little comments put people off, and I admire those who persevere through the prejudice and the male privilege.
I hope you had a good holiday!
@jimbarrett1975 thanks mate. These types of comments do not help at all. The holiday was great thanks 👍
The overall rail community has… a recurring issue with this sort of behavior. I’ve seen a few people talk about similar issues within the rail preservation community, most notably Chris Eden-Green… and have been victim myself in both the online discussion areas of the overall community and in even the actual rail working community as a New York subway employee.
This complex web of communities seems to attract a lot of people who are a bunch of sticks in the mud (to try to be polite) on anything different from them.
Hell, literally one of my first days on the job on the subway, I was the victim of ageist bullying for being younger than most of the people in the room.
As part of the training process, new hires need to do hands on training in every line of their division. I go do one of the lines that attracts all the senior conductors and train operators, and I am sitting in the break room, minding my own business, when the other guys start talking about “this room should be for people who have been here 20 years or longer…” and then started asking each other where they were during the 2003 blackout. For the record, in 2003, I was 15.
Never acknowledged what they were saying and just kept to myself, but it still stung.
@@metropod thank you so much for sharing. It shouldn't happen in any walk of life.
Thanks fir you comment. There is no room for any demcremintion in any part for any way or any thing these or any time, PERIOD 😮

Nice one, Steve. Modelling is for everyone, whatever their age ,sex, colour, or creed 🙂👍

This hobby is for everyone and if people want to hate others they are sad individuals who need to have a serious look at themselves. I’m a proud trans woman and I love my hobby and my layout, it’s an escape from what is at times a nasty hate filled world and I’m pleased to say when I’ve attended exhibitions which I do a lot I’ve never felt unwelcome. This is a great hobby and it should be open to all. More women are getting into it and why not. If these majority want to keep it all about old white men the hobby would die, and judging by the thousands at Doncaster just yesterday for the model show there it’s quite the opposite.
@@Michelle-fy7vj thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience. Our hobby needs to adapt to survive
@ it does Steve, for years it’s been hard enough to get kids into the hobby due to the old school attitude of some, never-mind women and other minorities. People are just people as I always say and as I said I’ve never encountered any negative attitudes when I’ve been to exhibitions which is brilliant
Well done Steve!!!!

WELL DONE, WELL DONE my friend. There is no room in the hobby for such narrow minded thinking by anyone it just hurts us all.
@@Randell-pb2xr thank you
Well said Steve.
I was going to make a joke about people who use Soundtraxx decoders but this video is way too important.
@andyknott8148 thank you my friend, much appreciated
Well said!
@@michaelmcbride2743 thank you
I don’t think I need to get political in any sense. I do respect everyone showing their effort and skills, even if I don’t like it personally. I also think the negative attention to this is generating the same results as not giving them any attention at all.
Besides that people should take their offense and prove the opposite by showing not by moaning. But that’s just me being both the devil and the advocate.
I’m not diving into this myself and just keep modeling. Same for the whole Trump situation. For example on FB I unfollow everyone of my friends that is not sharing model railroad stuff. They can still be my friend, but I’m giving their political issues no attention or fuel.
😘
@GenxDiorama thanks mate for the input 👍
These people are all keyboard warriors who would never say a thing to you face to face. I'm afraid they need to get a life before it's too late!!!
@@yarisman2 absolutely
I've been in or around the railway modelling scene since the early 90s, I've known modellers to be small minded, but not as to the sexuality of modellers. I've seen jealousy, pettiness, and people just disliking others. ever since being in the scene, I've met many women in the hobby, and many of them put men to shame when it comes to modelling detail.
However, I have seen a poor show from keyboard warriors, and I'm reasonably sure, they are not of the hobby as others. idiots that sit behind a keyboard or even a camera are just that, idiots
@@PondersEndModelRailway well said
@@thebritishrailroader thanks, I amended my point as I missed two words
Well said Sir, RESPECT!
Cheers my friend
Honestly this is a post that should not have to be posted. As a proud gay man. I have had trains since I was 3 years old. I don't consider my sexuality any part of my modeling. It is just who I am. I don't consider who I'm attracted to as a part of my modeling. If people inside my circle of friends read this. It might be the first time they here I'm gay. I don't care. I have loved trains since my earliest childhood. There. Enough said. I have been with all forms of modelers. We're not there for pickups. Were there for trains. So if you are a isolationist Oops. Ive been a part of the hobby in many cases as long or longer than you. Deal with it.
I am sorry you feel this way. I made this to call out those in the hobby that think it's ok to treat someone poorly because of who they are. I am a Bi man and have had to hide who I am to other modellers for fear of ridicule and rejection. These days I call it out if it happens. This hobby is for everyone, period (full stop - sorry English, have to do it)
@@thebritishrailroader I apologize for the misunderstanding. I was not being critical of your post. I was saying it should not have to be said. Im 65 years old. I know what, I will call, being discrete is. But as modelers. Why should we have to be anything. Male, Female, Straight, Gay or Bi. Those labels should not matter. Are you enjoying and learning in the hobby is all that should matter. Again. I am not judging. I am just enjoying all things that involve trains. Hopefully making some friends along the way. All boys, oops, Men's clubs is a ridiculous thought. As hobbyists. Lets enjoy the hobby and drop the judgement.
@bostith2236 hi mate. After I had replies, I realised that I had misread what you said so let me apologise to you. You are right, we shouldn't need to do this but the world seems to be going backwards at the moment. Thank you for your support and hope you enjoy the channel 👍
