True maple cookies from Canada would be Dare brand. Oreo is an American version. Unfortunately, you didn't get to snack on the true maple goodness I could always find in the cookie jar at my memère's house.
Defatted peanuts are how they make protein powder. When you remove the fat & grind into flour it's protein-dense, odour free, and mostly tasteless, making it perfect as a food additive. Why anyone would think that's a good combination for a peanut flavourted candy I can't imagine. Shellac isn't as common on candy as it used to be, but it's used to give a shiny exterior. It's a way to make cheap chocolate look like fancy chocolate. You often see it in lower end Christmas chocolates. Oh, and the reason the chocolate tastes different is that every country has different legal requirements for the ratio of cocoa butter to powder to call something chocolate rather than chocolate-flavoured. Canada's, the UK, the EU, and the US are all different. The US also has more processing, which causes some people to have a weird aftertaste.
Kit Kat is British. M&Ms and Pringles are American. I believe All-Dressed flavour is a Canadian thing. All-Dressed basically means a little bit of everything. In Canada, you'll also find All-Dressed bagels. It's a good choice when you can't decide what kind to get. Coffee Crisp is on the subtle side so understand your luke warm response. It's a popular bar in Canada though. So much so that there's also Coffee Crisp ice-cream.
The all dressed bagels in Canada are referred to as an everything bagel. For the chips is a mix of all the main flavors of chips(dill pickle, ketchup, bbq, salt and vinegar and sour cream and onion)
yah, i think rowntree was a uk company. there are some U$ brands that have canadian specific flavours, like roast chicken flavour lays, i don't think you'll find them too many other places.
Definitely could have found more Canadian treats, but just so people know, in many cases the Canadian ones are different from (and IMO better than) the American made ones (yes, we do usually produce our own versions in country, partly due to us having more regulations on our food production and packaging so American made products often can't be sold here).
Part of it has also to do with distribution rights. Kit Kat in the US uses a different recipe than Canada. In the States it’s made by Hershey. In the rest of the world it’s made by Nestle. Cadbury is owned internationally (including Canada) by Mondelēz International, but in the US it is made by Hershey and can only be sold for the US market. Etc Canada requires a higher percentage of cocoa solids to be considered chocolate. The first ingredient in Cadbury chocolate international is milk solids. Made by Hershey the first ingredient is sugar.
More accurately, Smarties are British (Rowntree, 1937) and are available throughout the Commonwealth and Europe. Interestingly, it's not actually known if the inventor of M&Ms copied Smarties or not. He was in Britain in that period, so it's possible he encountered them.
