Hi Jennifer. I am Portuguese and I lived in Portugal for 20 years. Think about it. Moving to Portugal in these days is not easy. Because of pandemic things has changed for the worse. I am not scare you, but you have to understand that Portugal is not seems as it seems. The cost of living is low good news, but the salary is also low. The food is amazing and cheap. There is lack of jobs everywhere is extremely difficult to find a job in Portugal. Cost of living is low as I mentioned earlier on but houses is cheaper than London for example where I am living but the problem is job and will be more difficult for someone who doesn’t speak Portuguese. Many companies closed. The weather is amazing, three months of summer which is incredible. You must learn Portuguese if you want find job there, or I don’t know your background but think carefully before you give this step. And the taxes are very high you must be aware of this. Think twice before moving. Do the math before moving. I have to admit that if you go on holiday it will be fine but living there these days it’s a bit complicated.

This is a hell of a lot cheaper to live here, especially the big bills. like buying a house is way cheaper and rates or government tax is ridiculously cheap, don't wait, move now and a lot warmer here, sometimes too warm.

Portugal is a lovely relaxed culture, especially compared to UK. In the year I've been here I've felt more 'at home' here than I did in almost 3 years living in France. I was just in Lisbon two weeks ago and I feel completely in love with the place. People felt welcoming and open to just talking to whoever, I speak some Portuguese so people were wiling to go the extra mile for me and it made feel so special. As a New Yorker I have the same struggles you faced in London, namely cost of living and it really made me consider what the world could offer me if I left. People feel so closed off and antisocial back home but in Portugal it doesn't matter if you drive a Mercedes or a bicycle people still treat you as an equal, I admire the way people just let go of materialism and enjoy life. Can't wait to see what other videos you cook up for us.

As much as I like Madeira (and I do!), I'd advise anyone that has not had experience in living in an island (do you?) to not commit to it dramatically right of the bat (most deffo not buying property in the first months of being there - unless you have literally zero restrictions with your money, then whatever).
Even tho Miranda do Douro is considered "remote" by Portuguese standards and is way smaller than Funchal as a city, it is very different to be able to drive anywhere.
The feeling of being stranded in the Ocean may not leave your mind, particularly when it is around you all the time.
Even though Madeira is a large Island compared to the other PT Islands, it may still give you this feeling.
In Miranda you are 1h-1h30 drive away from Bragança (PT), Salamanca (ES) and Zamora (ES).
They are both bloody gorgeous options anyway, so in a sense they aren't thaaat opposite ;)

I'm going to visit next year to look at land and just take a break abroad for the first time in years. Looking at the price of land to build on in Central or Southern Portugal, it seems like a no brainer. The place I'm renting now is valued at £180,000 and that's just a small studio flat...I could get a few acres and build a house from scratch for around a quarter of that in Portugal!
I could farm the land a little, have some animals. My work is digital so I think I can make the visa.
The weather looks amazing but the people and the pace of life sound even better! It sounds so so friendly and inviting! I hate what's happening in the UK, health and social care are being destroyed by the Tories (along with everything else) and it's definitely affecting the way people treat each other. I've already spoken to some other English people who immigrated to Portugal and some Portuguese people in the areas I like the sound of and am totally blown away by how friendly and welcoming they are.
I've just started learning Português (like a week ago) and this channel has been my favourite for picking up all sorts of useful phrases and words!

Liz! Great to hear your back-story. Two years ago, wallowing in the shame brought on by our fellow Americans, we decided to leave the country. Also, we couldn't afford to live there, and certainly could not afford to get sick there.
Surprisingly, the English speaking countries, Canada, Australia and New Zealand didn't want us: too old, no sought after skills, not an investing entrepreneur. And, as you mentioned, whatever your former home is called, is too bloody expensive.
I told my wife "I am not going to move to a country that does not have English as the primary language." Long story shortened. After living in Matosinhos for just over a year, your Portuguese language course has been instrumental in helping us to better acclimate.
People should start studying Portuguese seriously no later than when they decide to move here. Every time we step outside the door here, we are confronted with our lack of language skills. Yes, many Portuguese speak English. But it is with varying degrees of success, and there is often a question of "Did we hear that correctly?" The lack of communication skills quickly becomes downright embarrassing.
Continued success to you and your squeeze.

❤️ May you never fall out of love with us! And May I add you look 1000 % Portuguese??? 😄 I mean it as a huge compliment of course!
And yes, I can relate because as a Portuguese who has moved to the USA I feel it has been the greatest mistake of my life! Money is not happiness as my wise father predicted. There is a depth in Europeans that does not exist in Americans, i.e. USA citizens, possibly with exception to the native Americans. Oh and yes exception also to the Americans that actually leave the USA! 😉
Portuguese is a great place to start a family. Kids can still be kids. Most countries in Europe, really.
And yes! Women get 4 months maternity leave opposed to two weeks in the USA. There is also family leave, which does not exist in the USA. Shall I go on and on?

I’m an expat living in the UK. I came to the UK before the Brexit vote and whereas I feel for the young people who lost the EU passport, I dont think the UK is any less European now than it was before brexit. Many amazing countries like Iceland and Switzerland are not part of the EU, but get less bad rap than the Uk. The EU has its issues, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it eventually falls apart, but hope they keep the free market and free movement of people.

Yes I always lived with housemates and now its such a luxury for us to have a place to ourselves. Like I said I was lucky, I bought my apartment back in 2017 so prices were still kinda reasonable here then. Not so much now. But, your money does go a lot further here for sure!

If I saw you and your partner in the streets, I'd immediately assume you're Portuguese, both of you. Do you feel like that's a good thing? Have people asked you less about your mixed heritage since you left the UK?

    • @TalktheStreets
      @TalktheStreets  3 года назад +4

Yes and no, we both look Portuguese but when we speak people know we are not - I can go undetected for a while but eventually my Brazilian/English tendencies will creep in, haha! I prefer being asked about it here, because people are making assumptions based on the way I speak, rather than the way I look. We also move in a lot of international circles, and it's just a question that gets asked automatically and actually makes sense to ask, so I also mind that a lot less. In the UK, where I was born, raised and so clearly AM British from the way I speak, it was very tiring explaining my heritage on what felt like a daily basis.

Usually for a week or so, so this has been great to come for 3 months this time - but as you said stupid Brexit 90 days is my limit :(.

Good video. You did the right thing. London is a very toxic city. It’s always been my dream to leave the UK and relocate to Cyprus or Greece. I’m currently studying to become an English teacher abroad even though music is my passion. Since conscious hip-hop music isn’t marketable, I’m doing this purely as a sacrifice to realise my dream. If I manage to get this qualification, I should be able to live wherever I like. Portugal is also a wonderful country. I love how the Portuguese stay up late and have fun unlike people here in the UK. At the moment, I just speak modern Greek and English, but I’m also learning Portuguese (both Brazilian and European Portuguese), Spanish and Japanese. The only people who I’ve ever envied in my entire life are those who’ve managed to leave the UK and live a proper life with good weather, sun, sea and warm people. Seriously, you don’t know how lucky you are. What frustrates me, is that people in Greece and Cyprus including my relatives (I’m British Cypriot), discourage me from leaving the UK, have these fixed ideas that London is the “centre of the world”, Cyprus is a “village”, Greece has no quality of life due to the economic crisis, everyone should structure their life in the country their born and raised in and modernity is the “be all and end all”. As pessoas têm as ideias erradas.

£850 is a lot for rent? The average rent here in Seattle in 2022 is £1975 a month though studios (no bedrooms) average more like £1585. I suspect that your 2016 London rent has to be twice that in 2022 doesn't it?

The honest truth, i dont like portugal , especially lisbon, and Porto, I found lisbon and Porto are very expensive to eat out, and the flat are extremely uncomfortable to live in, and I couldn't sleep the whole time i was there... especially the hill, it was alot of works to work up and down the hill... i found most of the things like property is over priced, due to tourism ...

I've been a subscriber for around 6 months. We've been on a holiday in 2018 to Portugal. We've been learning Portugeuse books, cd's online and the RTP estudoemcasa lessons for over 2 years now. Hubby likes Spain and can speak Spanish well, along with French. It has been a struggle for me as I learnt French from 8 to 14 years. I work on 2 hours per day mixing the 4 skills. We hope to look at Oporto, Vila Real, Viseu and Castelo Branco with some language learning. A road trip of around 6 weeks. Why leaving the UK? Mixture of things, the UK has been changing not for the better, NHS being sold off, the f*** you society, slightly better in my locale. We can't locate right now due to older family care, but, we have an idea of what we would like, defo not an enclave. Hoping to get our portuguese to a functional level to make friends. Good luck and have a happy life together.

Are you living in the city of Lisbon? I'm very interested in retiring to Portugal (Lisbon or Cascais) in the next few years. I found last time I was there the native Portuguese were not that friendly toward us--and a bit intolerant that we did not know the language. Although, we did try our best with all of the greetings, phrases, etc. We were polite, respectful. Maybe they are sick of the tourists and how many people from other places are moving to their country. I really do want to learn the language--or at least the basics before I visit again.
