Sorry...love it but hertas are not triplets. The transcription even shows they're not triplets in the opening. Not sure why everyone thinks two 16ths and an 8th, etc are triplets!
I’m a novice drummer, and I have been wondering for YEARS how to play this. This is absolutely the best break down of Hot For Teacher that I have seen on the Internet. Thank you!
This should have 10 million views. I’ve seen people “teaching” this intro that completely butcher playing it on top of giving incorrect info. You absolutely nailed it.
Nice playing and this video definitely adds value in helping to understand such a complex set of patterns - thanks. Just for info for anyone wanting to understand the terminology for some of these patterns.... The double bass shuffle is actually the 1st and 3rd partials of each triplet (not second and third)- so that element is actually a traditional double bass shuffle. The 'bounce' section on the ride cymbal plays the first two triplet partials on the odd beats of each bar followed by the first triplet partial on the even beats of each bar. The Hertas are two 16th notes followed by 2 eighth notes (so they cover one and a half quarter note pulses).
so refreshing to see someone teach this with the correct sounds!! things i noticed when listening to the isolated tracks: i have the guitar hero rips of this song, with the toms and kicks separated so you can really hear what’s going on. in section 3 you mention the right hand coming over to the rack tom for an accent (you said sometimes you can hear it and sometimes not). this confused me as well, but with the iso tracks you can hear that it’s actually his right hand hitting a real floor tom for the one note. you can tell because it’s panned left instead of the more right of the (rototom) rack tom. the second thing in section 3 is that you are switching between the rack and simmons tom with your left to play the triplet, when there is no triplet. the triplet “sound” comes from the confusion between the kick and toms sounding almost identical. its an extra note that almost everyone who covers it plays, but its really obvious in the tom isolated track that almost no one seems to have. the left hand never leaves the rack tom, and the right plays a similar pattern to the ride once the song kicks in. dat, dat, da-da, dat, dat, da-da… etc. great lesson. im trying to make a video on this to really explain what’s going on, also addressing some of the theories you mention. thanks!
Tanner, thanks so much for this detailed message. This is the kind of stuff I really enjoy talking about! I have the same guitar hero isolated tracks, but once I found the sheet music I never went back in and compared it to the iso tracks, lol. 😃 Thank you for helping decode that mysterious "extra accent"... I will have to open up the mogg file and check it out as you did! Regarding the triplets in between the rack tom accents... yes, I totally understand what you are saying. It did occur to me about midway through learning this that he could be playing the same pattern on the low tom that he plays later on the ride, with the kick drum filling in the gap. I also watched a YT video where someone played it that way... it really makes sense. But, in the interest of staying true to the drum tab, and because I'd already mostly learned it, I kept with the triplets, lol! I really appreciate you checking this out & I really, really appreciate your detailed comments and feedback about this. Great comments, very interesting stuff!👍👍💛
Also, Tanner - any insight you can provide for what exactly is going on in section 2 would be appreciated! The drum tab I'm playing sounds very close, but I would swear there are some hertas and possibly other things happening there. Any thoughts or more great decoding work from the isolated tracks would be awesome!! 😃😃
@@MikeConwayDrums i have recently come across a video of Mike Mangini of Dream Theater saying that eddie vh told him in the 90s that both Alex and Eddie were playing on the intro… I’m currently looking into this possibility; it could be the explanation to the relatively “random”-ness of section 1-into section 2. eddie was an inexperienced drummer.. that would probably mean: eddie plays the simmons tom from section 1 and 2, with alex adding the bass drums in 2. then eddie drops out for section 3 which is as i explained earlier. i personally believe the entire song was done in one take, including the intro. whether it was one or two van halen brothers, i dont know 😅
Mike, watched a lot of you r videos. This one was great.. have to say you always look like superman playing drums but yo ualways hit the groove. Thanks for the education and ablilty to bring this forward. great job.
Dude, this is by far the simplest way I have ever seen anyone go at this difficult piece! The are videos where people play the hertas with the feet, and the one on Drumeo makes my brain hurt! Thank you for this...(I'm subscribed now)
Thank you so much Robert! I'm glad you appreciate my attempt at accuracy -- that's really what I was going for. Your great comments sure make me feel like I succeeded. I appreciate it!!🙏💛🙏
I’m only 4 minutes into the video and I felt I needed to comment how excellent this tutorial video is mate! I’ve been wanting to learn how to play Hot For Teacher for so long and finally found the tutorial that’s gonna make that dream come true my man! 😊😊😊❤
Your videos just started showing up on my feed a couple of days ago. I’ve watched (and enjoyed) about 5 KISS and Van Halen videos so far. Anyway, I wanted to share a little story that you might get a kick out of. When I was probably 11 or 12, my dad and I were getting ready to go somewhere in his car. I must’ve left my 1984 tape in his car tape deck. When my dad started the car, the first thing we heard (at a pretty decent volume..lol) was this drum intro. It startled my dad so bad that he jumped out of the car and ran back to the house! 🤣🤣 That was literally 40 years ago, and it still cracks me up when I think about that. 😜
Brillant Mike ! when I watched your cover on your channel , I was blown away by the way you played the intro so easely ... Now you make it understandable for all of us with this amazing video, and a big thank for that !! Your 're the (VH) man !!!
You read my mind Mike Conway!! I really want to learn to play Hot For Teacher and I can't understand the intro!! I'll watch your video as many times as it takes until I get it!! 😎🥁
Yes!! That was awesome and totally informative. I agree playing any song slowly and working your way up is always the best plan of attack... as tedious as it feels, especially when it comes to Hot For Teacher!! You did a great job explaining and made it really easy to follow this legend of a song.
I LOVE this. You did an excellent breakdown and teaching. So much better than other sites where it is just played with no explanation of what's going on. I hope to see some more videos of yours. Keep up the good work!
@MikeConwayDrums Are you kidding me? This is the best instructional video on the internet for this song. I'm working with it every day until I nail it. Again great job and a great attitude. ✌️

Thank you for watching and commenting Jeff! I value your feedback greatly -- you are a tremendous professional-level drummer, and such an inspiration. Your awesome support means so much to me!🙏💛🙏

Thank you so much I have been wanting to learn hot for teacher since i started drumming almost 6 months ago and I can finally play it after about 2 days of being focused on it and with the help of this great video!
This is an incredibly helpful video, thank you! I find myself instinctively playing the kick pattern RL RL, because I'm used to keeping time with my left foot, so I get what you mean about having to mentally get comfortable with the way the hands and the feet are in-line with each other, and then reversed one bar to the next. I've been able to play this song for years, but never new what I was rally doing, and just sort of faked my way through the intro. Now, I'm gonna learn it properly! Thanks! 🤘
Thanks Myke! Yeah, I edited out a part where I said you can play the kick LR LR, RL RL, or even LR RL I suppose! Thanks so much for checking it out my friend -- I'm sure there are many legit ways to play this. 🙏💛
@@MikeConwayDrums I wouldn’t change a thing, yes it’s 13 minutes but everything you said and demonstrated had value. You know a lot about AVH drumming… he seems to always throw something in his parts that’s a real twist. You should probably consider looking for other opportunities to break down his playing. You said one time AVH was a fan of jazz. In my 40 ish years of listening to Van Halen, I never realized that… just my thoughts, have a great week
Great breakdown of an unbelievably difficult drum piece. But that's VH for you. There will be so many opinions on the way it was done, and only Alex knows what the hell he did there. It's a work of art. You did an amazing job of teaching it and pulling it apart.
Thank you John! I'm glad you appreciate my attempt to break it down... it's so shrouded in mystery, which only adds to the legendary status. Intimidating, for sure. Thank you for the support! 🙏🙏💛💛
Awesome job, such a legendary drum lick! This was super helpful and informative on how to get that pattern down, can’t thank you enough! Amazing video Mike, keep rocking my bro!🥁🤘
You are the first one besides Alex himself that has ever gotten the ride cymbal accents correctly in the shuffle. Fantastic job my friend, really fantastic! I don't know why almost every drummer, who posts a hot for teacher video never gets the accents on the ride cymbal right?
Hey, thanks a lot for noticing that & commenting! I think it's natural for most drummers to land a bass drum beat on the second bounce of a swung ride beat -- it's a very common thing. Alex sort of inverted it and the bass drum lands on the first bounce of the ride beat & rests on the second bounce, so most drummers probably don't really pick up on that since it's pretty unorthodox. Thanks a ton for your great comments Glenn!🙏🙏
OMG, this is outstanding! I love this kind of videos and you've played it so perfect! I'm gonna learn how to play that intro thanks to you Mike, you rock! 🥁🔥
Excellent presentation Mike ... it's pretty much what passes in front of my eyes when I hear that as from the long experience I have I try to think of everything like score ...
Hi Mike. Here you prove that you are not only an excellent drummer, but also a first-class drum teacher. You explain the subject very calmly, in a way that is easy to understand and with a good dose of modesty and humour. You have a very good speaking voice and although English or American is not my mother tongue, I was able to follow you very well. A really great video!!! Hope you do more of this.
Gunter, I really appreciate your great comments (in English too) and support! You are such a talented drummer -- this really means a lot coming from you. I'm so glad you liked this... I wish I could write in German as well as you write in English. Thank you for watching... I was hoping to keep this shorter, but failed!
Thanks for the tutorial on this Mike! I've had friends jokingly request me to play it and I would just scoff and say yeah right. Now I can use this to practice and give it a try. Excellent breakdown brother!👍thanks again
Mike - this is going to pay dividends for a long, long time. Fantastic breakdown. This is tremendously helpful for players that want to play it right. The next time I play it live, I'll still do it wrong as hell but I'll think back to your tutorial (seriously though - I hope you do more of these dude)
.Mike you made another great video. Who better than you could explain van halen, you are the undisputed master in the matter, a pity that I do not understand English, but it is already a pleasure to watch you play
Excellent video content my dear friend!! This is really gives me another style or technique to play my kit!! This is very useful for a beginner like me!! Thanks for this wonderful tutorial!! Much love Kyle!! 😊🥁🇵🇭
This will be all a challenge to try!! Bro, you are such a talented drummer... this tutorial is the best i have seen of how to play this intro... its such an iconic intro... maybe one day i can do this... at 80bpm... hahahahahahahaha
Haha! I always appreciate your super comments my good man! I'm glad you checked it out... everyone else is doing RUclips Shorts and I come out with a RUclips "Long", lol! I tried to keep it brief, I really did... big hugs my friend!! 🙏💛
"This is all a part of section one" LOL!!!! This was great Mike! Such an awesome drum part and you explained it perfectly.......although I don't think I could play this without practicing for about a year! Haha. Thanks for doing this, I will give it a whirl!
I've seen another video that is really good, but this one is GREAT!!! Now I can finally complete my learning and play this. Thank you !!! You have a new subscriber!!
Great work Mike. I’ll find this a real challenge because of my pathetic lazy left foot but I’ll give it a bash! Also that ride sticking with the double bass sounds cool!! 💪🏻👍🏻
Awesome Mike! Good job, you have explained in a simple and straightforward way one of the most difficult drum intros to play. Keep up the good work my friend 🔥🔥🔥
I think it's safe to say that AVH is NOT human and we will never figure out the exact way he plays this intro LOL! But your tutorial was outstanding Mike (and nice to hear your voice too). Honestly, you lost me at section 1, but I kept watching because you're a beast brother 😀. Excellent instructional video Mike! \m/\m/
This is really really good my friend ..you really explain and show even so I understand thats a proof you make a fantastic video 🙏👍😀this tabs is chinese for me I guess I will never learn it but thats a high wish for me 🙂👍the work you put in to figure this song out is awesome and the work to show us is awesome Mike 👍❤💪🥁🙂and I love the smiling and laughing when you going through this for us many huge thanks for this 🙏🙏😀👍
I'm so glad you watched this Bjarne! I tried to keep it short, but failed... I'm not good at reading drum tabs, but it was the only way for this one!😮I appreciate your great feedback my good friend... rock on! 🤘🤘
What a great breakdown of the song, and the drum sound is very authentic! Well done, its a pleasure to watch. Not sure ill ever be able to play it though....
Great video! Also I think our brains are like from the same mold! Lol The way you break things down and explain them especially not knowing the technical proper terms 😅 Even the way you kind of explained how you were learning the song and make exercises out of hard parts! Lol I’m doing the same thing with Smooth Criminal (AAF version ) right now
Thanks mate , This is a good vid. I've wondered how he came up with that beat. Heard it was an exhaust system of some kind..... well that's what El Estepario Siberiano says on his channel. It's an iconic beat.
You have a great gift for teaching and this was a great lesson. This is one of the best breakdowns of this song I've seen on youtube. A very unusual drum track. Seems every time I listen to it, I pick out new things or something seems to sound different. The intro is so dense sounding and has such a sporadic or irregular feel to it, it sounds as if some of the hits are totally unplanned. It makes me wonder exactly how Alex came up with it and how it was recorded in the studio. I have never seen him play the intro live, which makes me wonder.
Thanks so much! I agree, this drum part is really like nothing else out there... I have no idea how Alex dreamed this up. I'm glad you liked my attempt to break it down!!😃🙏💛
@@MikeConwayDrums You're welcome. Yes, the intro and the fills through out the song are very unusual sounding to me. I worked on this myself and eventually would like to upload a video of some of my ideas on it. I use a single pedal and sort of did my own thing with it. Would make for a great video if Alex himself discussed the creation of this song. The shuffle pattern is pretty straightforward, I heard the idea may have come from "Space Boogie" by Jeff Beck.
Awesome tutorial, thanks Mike! Double bass rules 🔥 And great mix between your voice and the kit, it sounds like you're playing live on an acoustic kit 👍
About the corrected herta definition - It’s not three 8th notes but a sequence of two 32 notes followed by two 16th notes. Also, the very beginning of this song is actually not drums at all:)
😎🔥🤘 This wuz cool my buddy I finally get too see you and hear you talk 😎👍 I learned this intro back in the 80s it was a bit harder too learn back in the 80s because THERE WAS NO RUclips OR INTERNET!!!!! haha haha LoL 😂 anyways lol 😂 I have been playing it pretty much like you it’s very fun too play 😁❤️👍
Yes, back in the day I had to record "Friday Night Videos" off of network TV because my parents didn't get MTV. So I had the Van Halen video for "Jump" on my trusty VHS tape... I remember drooling over Alex's badass kit with the rototoms all over the place... those were the days! Thanks for checking it out my man!! 🙏💛
So cool, Mike! Man you always rock the Van Halen stuff, and this one is no different. You've got the AVH thing down, Brother! THE very best RUclips Van Halen Drummer!! Very cool tutorial. I'm not a drummer, but I do have a kit. I built an electronic kit into a real acoustic (Tama) kit. It's awesome, although not half as cool as yours. I'm going to have to give this a shot. As always, you CRUSHED AVH. So cool to see you back, and actually talking through this. Rock on my good Brother! Can't wait for your next one!
Sorry...love it but hertas are not triplets. The transcription even shows they're not triplets in the opening. Not sure why everyone thinks two 16ths and an 8th, etc are triplets!

Greetings from Sweden and you have a new subscriber! 🤟🏻🥁🇸🇪
Thank you GD! I'm glad you found it helpful and I appreciate your support my friend! 🙏💛👍
Thank you Kevin, I'm glad you like it. I tried to make this a quick video... epic fail! 😐
Mike - this is going to pay dividends for a long, long time. Fantastic breakdown. This is tremendously helpful for players that want to play it right. The next time I play it live, I'll still do it wrong as hell but I'll think back to your tutorial (seriously though - I hope you do more of these dude)
Haha! Thanks a ton Trey! I'm psyched that you dig it... I'm sure there are a dozen different ways to play this, each one legit. 🙏💛🤘
Sweet cover 😊
Thank you Marty! 🙏💛🙏
Great video Mike! It's nice to get some in depth look at this song, what a complex pattern. You rock!
Thanks a ton Henrik! I appreciate your nice feedback! 🙏💛
Amazing job man. Love the electronic kick sound. Feels like its 1984 again.
Thank you! Yeah, I love the AVH 1984 kit sound! 🙏🙏👊👊
.Mike you made another great video. Who better than you could explain van halen, you are the undisputed master in the matter, a pity that I do not understand English, but it is already a pleasure to watch you play
Thank you my brother! I wish I knew more languages... I always appreciate your great comments in English! 🙏💛
Great job, Mike! Excellent pacing on this for anyone looking to learn such an iconic, complex drum intro. Thank you!!

Haha! I always appreciate your super comments my good man! I'm glad you checked it out... everyone else is doing RUclips Shorts and I come out with a RUclips "Long", lol! I tried to keep it brief, I really did... big hugs my friend!! 🙏💛
@@MikeConwayDrums and is more clearer and understandable!!! Thank you again for sharing your amazing talent, bro!
"This is all a part of section one" LOL!!!! This was great Mike! Such an awesome drum part and you explained it perfectly.......although I don't think I could play this without practicing for about a year! Haha. Thanks for doing this, I will give it a whirl!
Haha! Thanks so much Robb! I'm glad you appreciate this... I failed miserably in my attempt to keep this video short. Doh!!! 🙏💛
I've seen another video that is really good, but this one is GREAT!!! Now I can finally complete my learning and play this. Thank you !!! You have a new subscriber!!

@@MikeConwayDrums 👌
Fantastic explanation, Mike!🤘🤘
Thank you for checking it out, Tom! I appreciate it my man! 🙏💛
Great work Mike. I’ll find this a real challenge because of my pathetic lazy left foot but I’ll give it a bash! Also that ride sticking with the double bass sounds cool!! 💪🏻👍🏻
Thank you my friend! My left foot is the same way -- pretty lame. This song is a great way to (try to) whip it into shape! 🙏💛
Awesome Mike! Good job, you have explained in a simple and straightforward way one of the most difficult drum intros to play. Keep up the good work my friend 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you Matteo! I appreciate you taking time to check it out -- rock on my man! 🙏💛
Haha, thanks so much Kev! I must agree about AVH... what mere human could dream up such a crazy drum track? I appreciate you, brother! 🙏💛🙏
I might use this tutorial when I teach myself how to play this song!
Awesome Marc! I hope it comes in handy... you will crush this tune! You have massive skills!🤘🤘🙏🙏
Thank you Nick, I appreciate your nice feedback! Just keep slowing it down... that's what I did anyway!🙏🙏👍👍
@@MikeConwayDrums Thanks Mike
Great video!
Also I think our brains are like from the same mold! Lol
The way you break things down and explain them especially not knowing the technical proper terms 😅
Even the way you kind of explained how you were learning the song and make exercises out of hard parts! Lol
I’m doing the same thing with Smooth Criminal (AAF version ) right now
Yeah, I just figured someone out there would understand what I was talking about. Lol! Thanks & good luck with Smooth Criminal! 🤘🤘
Thanks mate ,
This is a good vid.
I've wondered how he came up with that beat.
Heard it was an exhaust system of some kind..... well that's what El Estepario Siberiano says on his channel.
It's an iconic beat.
Thanks so much Saul! I have no idea how he came up with it either... there's really nothing else like it. 🙏🙏🤘🤘
outstanding thank you. Given me confidence to tackle this. Drum equiv of learning Eruption.
Thank you! I'm glad it helped you!🙏💛🙏
Great tutorial. I love the swing in this song, not easy by all means.
Thank you! Yeah, the swing feel at warp speed is pretty insane! 🙏💛🙏
Wow, that's a helluva e-kit!
Thank you! I added rims and shells to the pads! 😃🤘🤘🙏
Good job you're getting it You're playing straight eighths on the basedrum Though it's more of a gallop. shuffle
Awesome upload! You always rock the Van Halen tracks...you should do more of these how to's!
Thank you Adam, I'm glad you liked it! 🤘🤘
Wow great tutorial! I want to play drum! You are amazing👍👍😀
Thank you for watching Veronika! I appreciate your kind words! 🙏💛🙏
@@MikeConwayDrums You are very welcome😀
This is a great interpretation.Always wondered about this one.
Thank you Jim! I'm glad you like it my man! 🙏💛🙏
Great tutorial of this super Classic!!
Thank you Andrea! 🙏💛
Awesome tutorial, thanks Mike! Double bass rules 🔥 And great mix between your voice and the kit, it sounds like you're playing live on an acoustic kit 👍
Thank you Firefrost! Fortunately I was able to use camera audio for my voice! 🙏💛👍
Very cool lesson Mike 👍🏼
Thank you Spiro! 🙏💛
Fantastic video Mike! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you Popot!! Rock on my friend! 🙏💛
Thank you so much!!! This was so helpful! I’ve struggled with this for years 😂
Thank you Chris! I hope it helps... how Alex conceived of such craziness is the real question! 🙏💛
Great job bro. Sounds spot on!
Thank you Eric! I appreciate your feedback! 🙏💛🤘🤘
About the corrected herta definition - It’s not three 8th notes but a sequence of two 32 notes followed by two 16th notes.
Also, the very beginning of this song is actually not drums at all:)
Yeah, I think the herta gets confused with a triplet because it takes the space of 3 sixteenth notes (2 32nd notes + 2 16th notes = 3 16th notes).
Sounds just like original. Great job ans playing Mike 🔥🔥🔥🔥🥁🥁🥁🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟
Thank you Ben! I really appreciate your kind words brother! 🙏💛🙏
Well done. Thanks for doing this!
Thank you Michael! I'm glad you found it helpful. 🙏💛🙏🤘
Amazing tone and Great tips!!👏👏
Thank you urhottto! I appreciate your great support! 🙏💛🙏
Wowwww Amazing n Fantastic..Thanks for sharing Brother..😊👍🤘🙏
Thank you so much my friend! I appreciate that! 🙏💛🙏
Thanks so much Z! I just had to nerd out on some Alex Van Halen with this one! I sure appreciate you checking it out my friend! 🙏💛
Very cool.. Thank for you sharing my new friend music 🥁🥁
