Jean-Michel - How do you know slaves built this place? This was the work of highly skilled artists and craftsmen. Slaves may have done the grunt work but I doubt the artists were slaves.

Andrew Zourides renaissance copied roman ruins, and as paint was vanished over time they did not add it: statues, columns and so on, all was left blank. And result of this is that even TODAY, the very modern sculptures, are not painted. We are still influenced by ruins and not actual roman art.

We now know that ancient greek sculptures were painted since some of the paint remains on found sculptures. I think what this shows is that one must carefully examine one’s assumptions whether it’s art, politics, medicine or whatever.
If I had Jeff Bezos money, I would build an exact replica of the restoration and let it out for tours. I believe many many people would love to see such a place.

I know this comment is 4 yrs old, but they actually do this when you go and see the Domus Aurea! You get to put on an Oculus, and they reconstruct one of the rooms with you inside of it, as if you're actually there. It was really cool.
I've visited the area of Hadrian's villa a few times and always tried to imagine how it might have looked some 2,000 years ago. The area is massive and the remains so interesting. This is a wonderful reconstruction! Thanks for a most wonderful video!!

Yes, this is´beautiful! I studied the history, culture and society of the ancient world for a year at university and have walked through a couple of the old Greek cities of Ionia looking at the ruins and pondering what it would have looked like 2.000 or 2.600 years ago. Haven't worked professionally with antiquity but it remains a steady interest to me personally, and so many others... This is a lovely restoration of one of the great monuments of the High Imperial Age left to us - thank you so much! ❤❤
God its so beautiful why can't we have architecture like this anymore? It feels more alive, more comfortable than these nasty square buildings with no color or life.
The recreation of traditional architecture is getting more and more attention. For instance in Germany and Hungary whole palaces were rebuild recently. I hope this will inspire architects of today to overcome the taboo on using traditional ornaments in their designs of new buildings.
Such a beautiful piece of work and restoration recreated for us to enjoy. I really love how the statuary is depicted fully painted in vibrant colors the way the Romans actually had them. My favorite part was the hallway of the Piazza d’oro with the fine linens hanging in the archways gently blowing in the wind it made me really feel like I was there.
And this is why opulence of this stature is so unbelievable....mansions of today are nice and all, but the palaces and villas of roman times were astounding...being wealthy back then was on a whole different level

This is a great study. I excavated with one of the team member's many years ago and visited Hadrian's villa. 3d modeling really helps us immerse ourselves in this amazing heritage. and especially now that Italy is so hard to reach. Thank you Liz!

The book I'm reading about Trajan references this place as somewhere He (Trajan) could entertain guests to dinner occasionally when possible. The book mentions that the guests were pleasantly taken by the sheer beauty of the place. Thanks for doing the reconstruction, so fascinating :)

Hadrian had a reputation for unconventional architectural taste, and it certainly shows here. There are forms & arrangements in the palace's structure you don't see anywhere else in the Roman world. But I will say, the effect is spectacular. Good taste, it seems, never goes out of fashion.
Well, you did also have to deal with the constant threat of assassination, invasion, and rebellion. Hadrian lived in one of the more stable periods, but he still had to deal with 10% of the world's population. He handled the burden extremely well, though.
Romans were extreme Hellenophiles. The reason the Republic talked about Pyrrhus of Epirus so much was that he was the closest the Romans had to fighting Alexander the Great himself. Julius Caesar studied Rhetoric in Greece, wanted to emulate Alexander and preferred to talk in Greek. Augustus was the one who sanctioned the Aeneid Nero played the lyre. Julian the Apostate wanted a return to Greco-Roman Polytheism and wanted to emulate the Iliad on his Parthian campaign.
Must comment; excellent reconstruction! You have a very nice architectural sense, of how it all hangs together, the texture of building and gardens etc., just the right degree of embellishment. The Piazza D'Oro particularly nice, reflecting Hadrian's bold taste in architecture. This is certainly not a complaint, but a comment about the 'painted statuary' as various have commented below. The ancient authors spoke of 'delicate tints', so it was not simply slapping a coat of gloss on. Hadrian was such a collector, so many of the pieces would have been bronze originals...marble being more of a material for copies...and the thing i've noticed in the classical taste for 'lifelike', are the inlaid eyes. From the very few original survivors, we can see that the effect was stunningly arresting, as though one is meeting the original in the flesh. So, a very tactile vision of the Villa Adriana, which was regarded in ancient times as one of the real gems. Well done again!

I love history and CGI reconstructions like these because it's as close as we can get to visiting the ancient world in person. I do however realize unlike many that they do not reflect reality. These reconstructions are wonderful art but science. The simple fact remains that there is nowhere near enough remains left to do complete reconstruction like these. One need only look at what little remains in the actual photographs. We are very lucky sometimes to find portions that have been well enough preserved that we get mosaics and painted halls and frescoes. I really really want a time machine or a "Guardian of Forever", LOLOL
HELLO.Please consider that most of the antic Roman architecture goes by rules which allow already with only parts left to recalculate all the missing parts. P ex. Columns always should be built according to very precise proportions and what is added on top of these also mostly goes by these rules. The archaeologists found many even tiny fragments of these buildings and when they see such parts they can deduct a lot from these. Where they must have been placed because most decorative elements also go by rules. Once you got a base of a column it is usually very possible to deduct from its dimensions the final height of the building which went along with such columns. Windows and doors will have proportions accordingly. The archaeologists will find small parts of the buildings which for the stone recyclers and looters had no value. Broken tiles, fragments of marble.. broken window glass... all this is enough to determine the look of major parts of such leveled ancient properties.
A couple of thoughts that might help with that.. The knowledge isnt lost. We know how to carve and stack rocks, how to pour Roman cement. Etc. The beauty is degraded as time does to all things, but there is also much beauty being created by todays artists and artisans. Don't become so wrapped up in the past that you loose sight of the beauty being made now. Next, not everything about those houses were so wonderful... no glass in any of the windows. Finally recall the cost of creating and maintaining that house in human lives, the number of free staff and of slaves needed to make it and keep it working for the good of the handful who actually got to live in it. Some things come at too high a cost. Roman wealthy residences came at the cost of huge numbers of free living in six and seven story apartment buildings that frequently fell down due to poor construction orthat caught fire and burned entire neighborhoods. Cicero was an infamouse slum lord and once commented that he was glad one of his tenements fell because he could charge more for tooms in a newer building.

I completely agree, we have completely lost touch with nature and our artistic tastes are dwindling. Modern artists sell absolute rubbish for millions while talented ones struggle to get by on patron money or as designers for AAA video games or film sets if they are lucky. There are many great people who live in silence, I wish I was one of them but I can't say I am.
There are palaces or estates whatever is PR to say these days that are way larger and even more extravagant today. Just like then, you're part of the the rabble never invited to see it. Hidden away so the masses won't get pissed they're being exploited while others live even better than emperors or kings of old. BUT! Unlike then, you can rent some Mc-mansions for a few days for a few thousand dollars or more... and some were so grotesquely extravagant it eventually caused the dynasty to sell or abandon it and are now museums and/or hotels us rabble can visit and actually enjoy a little. And remind ourselves how exploited we all are.... and how hoggish rich can be they eat themselves up and lose it all. Google will show you some. And then there are many more that are hidden away. I visited this place once on a hot, cicada buzzing, summer afternoon and it was like being in a dream. This villa is/was truly massive. I remember thinking Hadrian could have spent his visits in one section of it or another, for weeks on end, without ever bothering to spend anytime in the rest, because it was so huge. I don’t think that’s what he did though actually, as he probably stayed in the same living quarters every time but I could be wrong. Also, I think he ended up governing the Empire right out of his Villa, and didn’t bother spending much time in Rome. I liked looking out on the surrounding countryside from the vantage points and imagining Hadrian looking out over the same thing. Btw, I had always read that the area where Hadrian’s Villa was, was a traditional place where wealthy Romans of Iberian origin(like Hadrian) built holiday villas, where they could escape the sweltering heat of Rome… But it was a hot, sweltering day up there at Hadrian’s Villa when I visited! Lol. I guess it was still more open, and probably had better breezes than the stifled, crowded streets of Rome.
I toured Hadrian's villa last week near Tivoli. This recreation was just fabulous. The museum there would probably be interested in the viddy if they do not already use it.
Most people think the statues were all in the colour of the natural stone they're in, while they were all painted. The hair, the skin, everything. This detail here is superb.

I love the style of roman villas with the courtyards and other outdoor spaces. It really integrated outdoor/indoor living in an almost perfect manner.

So much ancient beauty and knowledge has been lost sometimes when I think about it it hurts so much !
A couple of thoughts that might help with that..
The knowledge isnt lost. We know how to carve and stack rocks, how to pour Roman cement. Etc.
The beauty is degraded as time does to all things, but there is also much beauty being created by todays artists and artisans. Don't become so wrapped up in the past that you loose sight of the beauty being made now.
Next, not everything about those houses were so wonderful... no glass in any of the windows.
Finally recall the cost of creating and maintaining that house in human lives, the number of free staff and of slaves needed to make it and keep it working for the good of the handful who actually got to live in it. Some things come at too high a cost. Roman wealthy residences came at the cost of huge numbers of free living in six and seven story apartment buildings that frequently fell down due to poor construction orthat caught fire and burned entire neighborhoods. Cicero was an infamouse slum lord and once commented that he was glad one of his tenements fell because he could charge more for tooms in a newer building.

I completely agree, we have completely lost touch with nature and our artistic tastes are dwindling. Modern artists sell absolute rubbish for millions while talented ones struggle to get by on patron money or as designers for AAA video games or film sets if they are lucky. There are many great people who live in silence, I wish I was one of them but I can't say I am.
There are palaces or estates whatever is PR to say these days that are way larger and even more extravagant today. Just like then, you're part of the the rabble never invited to see it. Hidden away so the masses won't get pissed they're being exploited while others live even better than emperors or kings of old.
BUT! Unlike then, you can rent some Mc-mansions for a few days for a few thousand dollars or more... and some were so grotesquely extravagant it eventually caused the dynasty to sell or abandon it and are now museums and/or hotels us rabble can visit and actually enjoy a little. And remind ourselves how exploited we all are.... and how hoggish rich can be they eat themselves up and lose it all.

I visited this place once on a hot, cicada buzzing, summer afternoon and it was like being in a dream.
This villa is/was truly massive. I remember thinking Hadrian could have spent his visits in one section of it or another, for weeks on end, without ever bothering to spend anytime in the rest, because it was so huge. I don’t think that’s what he did though actually, as he probably stayed in the same living quarters every time but I could be wrong. Also, I think he ended up governing the Empire right out of his Villa, and didn’t bother spending much time in Rome. I liked looking out on the surrounding countryside from the vantage points and imagining Hadrian looking out over the same thing.
Btw, I had always read that the area where Hadrian’s Villa was, was a traditional place where wealthy Romans of Iberian origin(like Hadrian) built holiday villas, where they could escape the sweltering heat of Rome… But it was a hot, sweltering day up there at Hadrian’s Villa when I visited! Lol. I guess it was still more open, and probably had better breezes than the stifled, crowded streets of Rome.
Everything they build looked beautiful... they probably couldn't build ugly, like we do.
I toured Hadrian's villa last week near Tivoli. This recreation was just fabulous. The museum there would probably be interested in the viddy if they do not already use it.

Sensational. I can't say much for their color schemes, but it's wonderful to see how things would have looked -- and how similar to things today.
Most people think the statues were all in the colour of the natural stone they're in, while they were all painted. The hair, the skin, everything. This detail here is superb.

I would love to know what lawn service they used back then. They did a great job.
They did this all without computers and advanced machinery of today. The artisans passed down knowledge every generation, it was all in their creative minds.
If you’d like to walk through *something* like this, I’d recommend visiting The Getty Villa in CA. A lot of this video reminds me of that museum.
