No. There are 168 hours in a week. The average rent nationwide for a 1 bedroom apartment is $1,163. Federal minimal wage is $7.25. If you work 2 jobs for 78 hours total , that comes out to about $2262 per month ($1990.56 after taxes.). That leaves you with over $800 in your pocket, 8 hours of sleep every day, and 4 hours of spare time. Stop being lazy. Don't want to work for minimum wage? @@Yso0Serious1 There are so many things wrong with your argument. 1- That average rent is complete BS and is not as simple as that. Some states are way more than that $1163 you quoted and don't say people should move because it's not that simple 2- You're only talking about people who sit in that 12% tax bracket. That person if that person making $39,475 goes $1 over, they now fall in that 22% bracket and more money gets taken from their pay check. 3- You also didn't factor in commute and the availability of that second job
Why because the rich need you too keep working for pennies until someone shows you How To RUN this thing invest Run your own business and stop trading time for money you will always be poor 👍You will never be rich by working for Walmart 20 years 😂not happening if more people who run businesses showed how this game is played everyone would be sitting in mansions who had a strong work ethic some people have so much potential to Run a Business but don’t know how it could generate wealth so they go work for a boss that’s already rich and say fuck it it’s too much work America’s is sad 🤔💴 But if you only knew you didn’t need the workforce and can run your own show and generate wealth that’s priceless 😎
@Major Minor Those are the rules for normal times. The head of WHO said today WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FIRST WAVE OF THIS GLOBAL PANDEMIC. No one has seen this before in our lifetimes. Look at the Great Clips employees that were threatened to return to work and two employees worked all week sick and 140 workers and customers now are on pins and needles waiting to see if they caught it. In a few short months there will be much better treatments discovered and the start of vaccine trials. I'm 65 with asthma. If i hadn't walked out I'd be dead by now. There might be attempts to collect the edd payments from some of these people, but there will also be lawsuits because if you genuinely feel you could lose your life at a high contact job and want to follow WHO and CDC, there will be more on the side of employees legally. No one cares about the meatpacking employees. We all see what's happening to them.⚰⚰⚰⚰⚰⚰⚰

I am poor and l think it is wrong for non working people to make more than working people. Could Congress not figure out how to pay the unemployed their regular pay? Andrew Yang was criticized for the universal $1000 a month income for every American over 18. Congress should have tried that first. All except one of the people l know make more money working than not working. I am happy to go back to work next week even though l will make less money. That extra money made my life easier, but the guilt of making more money than my daughter and son who are working is overwhelming. I am not giving it back of course, but someone will pay for this. It won't be the elite.
"It is a limited amount of money for a limited amount of time that will run out". Then they will have to compete with a lot of other unemployed people .
Unless people finally wake up and give them the middle finger. The reason wages are so low is because there was already a surplus of workers. You have no bargaining power as an employee because either you take the wage or starve. Otherwise they just give the job to someone else(worker surplus). I say let these companies hurt. Force them to raise wages to get employees back. Yes, it will raise costs. It beats sacrificing your wages so that the rich get cheaper goods. That's the real con that's been pulled on everyone.
@@themessenger3216 At some point you have to say f* it! Either way it's coming sooner or later. Now seems like a good time to do something about it. It's time for people to realize that the only people that gain from cheaper goods are the people not sacrificing their wages for them.
Did people forget that we’re living in a pandemic?! Who tf is going to risk their life for $8 per hour? Pay people if you want them to risk their lives and make sure they have access to healthcare’
Nope. The cause is they have no skills. Go to college major in cs there u go $200k income. If u have no skills what do u except lmao. U have to work hard
What an excuse. Go to trade school, acquire useful skills, do something in a time where opportunities are all around you. Why does someone who can do a job that literally anyone else in the world can do, deserve to be payed high?? Doesn't make sense. If you raise the minimum wage, business owners are just going to scout harder and won't accept applications as easily, which means more people will be unemployed. The minimum wage is a standard to start off with, not make a living from; you work your way up in this country.
Yeah something isn't right. The virus exposes what is wrong with America. They take take from their citizens and give pennies in return. People are working like slaves for pennies they can't even feed their families on. The hardworking people get nothing in return but taxed for everything while the rich get richer. People need to wake up and stop spending your hard earned money for things you don't need and that's keeping you in debt. This virus has exposed allot of things that needed to come to light. Rent is high, the fake, processed foods are high. It's terrible. Now they want you to go out to work to expose yourself and your family members to boost the economy. Let the rich spend their money and boost the economy. Without the hardworking people their is no economy.
I bet my life the bowling Alie girl is an actor ! Unemployment is enough for someone who has no bills ! CNN controlling the world ! Look into the billionaire people !
Dear melted: Goes to show how the govt doesn't give a damn about the people. Trump was bragging about how low the unemployment was, but that's only because the min wage jobs that were left after manufacturing went overseas required many people to work two, and even three jobs just to make ends meet. How LOW America has gotten when a college graduate can't find a better job than at a bowling alley. That has NOTHING to do with the pandemic. That's just an example of how Screwed the average American is these days. To put the blame on a person because he makes more on unemployment than by working is pathetic. This situation shows that it takes a national emergency for the average American to get enough money just to get by. In his last State Of The Union address, FDR called for an Economic Bill Of Rights to ensure the average American a decent standard of living. FDR died before he could accomplish that, and the pitiful results of that failure are Just SO Obvious in this report. ... jkulik919@gmail.com
@The Ocelot it's not $7.25 in every state like Cali where I am. It varies state to state but you make a strong point. How the hell is it legally being allowed to freeze but the world fees keeps going up.
@@joycepino5346 FEDERAL minimum wage 7,25 only and hasn't been raised in more than a decade. And some states still have the "tipped minimum wage" of 2,75 (I am not kidding you). In theory the employer must compensate the worker if the avarage income with tips does not reach 7,25 per hour on average. Employers will not try to manipulate the number of hours and force the workers needing that job to go along with it, they will not evade the law (never mind the bureaucratic hassle !).
On one hand, she could make $950/week and not get Covid19 or she could go to a place where she could get Covid19 and make $250/week... Seems simple enough for me.
How does anyone survive on $250/week?! Unless they are living rent-free with their parents, surely earning only $250/week as an adult, with adult bills must be impossible. I’m not from the States, I live in Australia, so maybe the cost of living is much cheaper there, but that $250 here would only cover rent and maybe one small bill. You would have to share a 2 or 3 bedroom house with about 20 people to try and make it work with that sort of money. Although, your unemployment benefits are much higher than they are here. In Australia it is called the Jobseeker allowance and you can get around $570/fortnight I believe, plus at the moment they also get an extra $550/fortnight as a “Coronavirus benefit” until maybe September, depending on how things go with the virus, I guess.
@Ricky Fontaine , lol! You guys don't use fortnight instead of saying 2 weeks?! I'm from Ireland, but moved to Australia about 11years ago. Both countries and the UK use the word fortnight! But here in Australia, most people get paid fortnightly, whether it is paid work or if someone is receiving benefits. But the normal jobseeker benefit here isn't enough to live off of, in my opinion. Although, they can still work part time or casual and earn up to a few hundred dollars and still receive the benefit. I don't know how much, but I'm pretty sure it would only be maybe $300-400/fortnight. If they earn over the amount they are allowed, then that is reduced from the benefit. I guess it's an enticement for those receiving it, to try and get more work as it is not enough to live off of. I'm an 80's kid too! I first came here on a working holiday visa for a year, back in 2000 and fell in love with the place. So once my year was up, I went back home, went to university and worked for a couple of years and applied for my permanent residency. Finally got it, moved out here and now I have my Australian citizenship, while also keeping my N.Ireland /British citizenship. It is such a massive country, there are many great places to travel and different experiences to have. Our borders are closed to the rest of the world right now, but when the world does start to open up again, you should keep an eye out for some cheap flights to come over here and do some traveling around. 😊

I'm fairly torn on this. I think people who put in honest work should deserve appropriate pay. I want to reward good workers. But there are many who don't perform and show up late to the job. It's hard to vet everyone thoroughly especially for unskilled labor. As a small business owner, we have plenty of bad eggs that take advantage of employers. Not the other way around. We would be happy to pay an appropriate wage, but some employees demand more pay for less. Why should I pay you more for not doing your job? Why do so many feel entitled to a "living wage" when they sit on their butts looking at their phones? It's not binary. I started off after college in customer service at basically minimum wage. I learned new skills on the job and brought more to the table. My boss promoted me and gave me raises. I admire my old boss for that. But as an employer, I see many who just demand more and more but give less and less. How is that okay?
Sorry to tell you but my husband makes nearly $20/H and is only bringing home about half of that original statistic (350+600/W) AKA its to bad he CANT go on unemployment.... oh and sadly hes one of those who is at a higher risk for COVID
Joshua Hudson this is the part I don’t understand, it seems like the ceo or owner of a company would make the most money, that’s logic right? Now if we payed regular workers a ceo salary then 1, where would that money come from and 2, what would the incentive be to try and be better at that job to climb the ranks when you can make more money then a ceo being a regular worker?
Yeah, funny how to increase hourly wages is a huge shock! I'd add that to get $600-900/week might show low wage staff to get skills, motivate to get better higher level jobs.
@@mountainsky4279 There's a difference between UBI witch I'm for and raising minimum wage, which I'm against. Andrew Yangs purposal was to give every American 1k a month. No matter what. This helps everybody and it gets those who make $7.25 an hour closer to that $15.00/h mark that everyone wants. However, raising only the minimum wage to $15/h would be a slap in the face to nurses who just graduated from school making.. that's right, $15/h. Truck drivers, which i am, average $18/h. Starting electricians $17/h... you get my point. The federal minim wage is $7.25. So if you're going to raise it to $15 everyone else needs a $7.75 increase per hour to their jobs. In return, they'll just raise the cost of living and all that would be a waste of time.

@@nemonucliosis You are correct, there's wage push inflation, but the other side of the coin in raising wages is that the working class becomes more productive, they feel more encouraged to work longer hours with less likelihood of quitting, and they SPEND, which stimulates the economy. Ideally, a strong economy has *confident consumers* that can/want to spend, spend, spend without going broke. Keeping your working class broke is just bad for sales because your employees are likely your most reliable consumers.
@@DramaticGnat I agree spending does stimulate grow however if you increase wages people will be laid of because companies won't be able to pay all their employees. It recently happened when Bernie Sanders increased the wages of the people working for him. Or prices of goods will go up to offset the employee wage increase. This is a much more complex issue than just simply saying "pay people living wages".
@@nemonucliosis What determines employment is demand, not wages. The reason people are getting paid crap is because there is a surplus of workers. People have no bargaining power because they will just hire someone else if you don't like it. The lie that has been told to people is that cheaper prices are better. Cheaper prices are only better for the people who aren't sacrificing their wages for those cheaper prices. What you claim about laying people off could be true, but it wasn't true in the state of WA. Their state's is $12hr and some cities it is $15. Honestly, I don't know what you are talking about with Bernie Sanders. I highly doubt that, since he had millions of dollars in donations and pretty much always had a surplus of millions of dollars. The only thing that dealt with Sander's staffers that you could be referring to is that some weren't getting paid $15hr. It was something to do with people who were salaried that worked long hours. It ended up those people after working some amount of hrs above 40 would end up getting less than $15hr. If you don't think it is ok for prices to go up, then we should roll back the last 30yrs of housing inflation. Why should some people expect a premium for their goods and those same people expect others to sacrifice their wages for cheaper goods?

cutting taxes from low income earners sounds good until you realize that it doesn't help those not earning income and it reduces funding to social security. im against tax cuts for the poor if it also means cutting their benefits. we need to RAISE taxes on the RICH to fund more support for the poor.
@ricky heckendorf no, pay attention, income tax higher than 100k doesn't go to social security. Cutting taxes of those making less than 100k cuts social security, the true goal of conservatives. If they coupled the tax cut for low income with a tax hike on the rich with provisions that their tax money goes to social security in order to cover the shortfall I'd be more supportive. But as it is, this is just a way to reduce the ammount of social security available. Conservatives love to cut taxes for the rich then complain that we can't afford to help the poor. But cutting taxes from the poor won't help the unemployed. It won't even help the poor because we will have fewer social services available. One of the most infuriating things about our tax codes is how we section whose taxes go where. Even Bernie's tax plan had to specify that most of his Medicare plan would come specifically from stock speculation, a task poor people don't engage in, and still conservatives shouted that Bernie wanted to raise your taxes. But that's never the whole story, conservatives don't like to talk about the services you get for those taxes.

Working class Americans need to boycott nationally in order to get at least an $18 an hour mininum wage. There is no excuse not too....that is their bargaining power.

Businesses need to pay more, it’s not rocket science. Wages have not kept pace with inflation and the cost of living for the past couple of decades. The population of the working poor is increasing.
Wow no one wants to work for a staffing agency whether or not they get unemployment. Look how much a tiny bit of extra money changes these people's lives, a tiny bit more makes them stable and a job doesn't do that.
Kicked out of a job that paid substandard wages without a second thought, concern or worry. Two months later you are surprised the employees give as much S#@T about your company and the wages you are ready to pay as you demonstrated you did about them. It takes a pliable morality to wrench that thought process inside your head...

That's what I was wundering.when they turn down there jobs because the price isn't right they should have the door slam shut after the unemployment check goes down and they suddenly want to take the offer. It should no longer be available to those that chose not to work when they where given the option
1) Employers have the power to decline the unemployment requests if their employees turn down their job offers. That's what those letters are. 2) It's blatantly obvious that higher living wages are required. 3) It's also obvious that the employer interviewed is concerned about making money off of his employees, and not about their well-being, their valid health concerns, and their ability to make it through this crisis in one piece 4) It's disturbing to see the reporter and economic analyst talk down to people getting unemployment right now. The idea that "they" need "weaned off" of it is belittling and clearly spoken from a position of power. These people, who likely have little savings and have lost their health insurance (if their job even provided it to begin with) obviously know and are making calls about what is best for their financial situation right now. Especially in light of the fact that the government has been largely unsupportive of creating a larger-picture and long-term economic recovery plan and no one knows how long this will last or what economic necessities are going to emerge spontaneously (health crisis, housing crisis, etc.) . I'm willing to bet that if these people in power were ever in the position like the college graduate interviewed, they would be grateful to stay on unemployment longer too. But ultimately, they don't seem to understand the insecurity, uncertainty, and economic terror of not having enough economic resource whether or not you are employed. They don't seem to connect with the suffering of not knowing if you will have a society that catches you when the world falls and you were already struggling to get by. 5) It's so clear that we need a social fallback for these economic situations. It is so counterproductive to blame and look down upon those who lack economic resource. We as a society need to be providing social support. We need to be able to give people the right of mind and tangible resources to know that they will a) never starve b) never lose their housing c) always be able to afford quality healthcare. 6) These are all huge American and capitalist problems being exposed by this pandemic. They needed fixed long ago, now it's just even more obvious!
Companies pay wages based on the skill and scarcity of qualified staff, employees aren't forced to accept a pay rate they take it voluntarily not to mention it doesn't take much money to have someone pour coffee into a paper cup. Ash K your definition of a living wage sounds more like a “comfortable wage.” Where I live someone could live well on about $15/hour. And there are plenty of those jobs already. High school kids or folks wanting part-time work take the jobs that pay less. Aside, if that’s not enough for someone’s lifestyle, they pick up more hours. We have become so entitled to think a living wage is a wage that provides all of our luxuries, as well. That will not help anything?! If we do that then the products we purchase will only increase in price. If we increase minimum wage it will help those workers momentarily but hurt anyone making above minimum wage.
You think that's the simple solutions but many small businesses barely make enough profit to survive, raising minimum wage just forces them to close down, reduce staff and or take on the work themselves.

People who work receive unemployment. When you work in the books you pay into unemployment. People in welfare/public assistance are not paying into unemployment benefits. There’s a difference
@LadyEquipped thats the stupidest thing I have ever heard Unemployment is for people who had jobs and were laid off to not fault of there own so they collect unemployment until they find work again (yes some people take advantage of this) n mind you anybody who has a job pays into unemployment. Now Welfare is used by mostly lazy people who dont want to work.
When this is the case, something is fundamentally wrong with our system. Wages for workers need to be higher and executives paid less. The only way I see this to be possible is if everyone unionizes.
Jaysis even on the message boards no one knows how ignorant this report was? If you QUIT a job or refuse to go back to work, you are automatically disqualified from unemployment. Now if this business owner FIRED his employees rather than laying them off, then yeah, maybe someone can get around it, otherwise there is no *CHOICE* to return to work or not on the employee’s part. I know ppl who actually asked their employers to let them come back at 1/2 or 2/3 of FT so they’d still qualify for the extra $600 and were unequivocally told NO bc the businesses do not want to pay higher UI tax in the future. My understanding was the PUA wouldn’t affect UI rates, so I think they were screwing their employees without cause, nonetheless that is the way it normally works, so I can’t get outraged at them. Just wish they’d tried to do right by their people. Honestly, I think it is perverse to not give the same bonus to everyone who actually worked during the entire crisis, like nurses aides or grocery store employees.... Anyone making under 30 or 40k a year should absolutely be getting it while they are working during the crisis! That’s the way you incentivize work. You set a wage floor so ppl don’t starve and aren’t made homeless, and then you gradually phase out the subsidy so that working pays.
It's time to bump up minimum wage to a living wage...

Yep, the minimum wage is fine at $7.25/hour in 2020 when the amount of billionaires in America grows at an insane rate.

Did you fail basic economy class? Chapter 1, page 1, first sentence says if wages go up, the price of everything goes up because of supply and demand.

Pay everyone $1600 a day. There...problem solved.
You’re welcome.
Seems to be working for Africa...
Yep, was thinking about this earlier. These businesses have sob stories about how employees won't come back because they haven't got to. Yet when everything was going good for the company they didn't give a damn about you.
@@slippyC73 Preach. I've seen plenty of even white collar jobs, where the managers literally treated workers like it was a game show just for their enjoyment to see people peck at each other. It was sickening they did not see people as people but as objects that can be disposed of at any times. How do they even sleep at night when treating people this way? Sadly these types usually keep their jobs in the situation, but one day you know...karma bites they @$$
@@slippyC73 Well, they did provide you with a job and a wage that you agreed to when you signed the forms. If you don't like your job, then learn some skills and get a higher productivity job. In the system we still have, there's nothing preventing you from doing that provided you have the willpower and the brains.
@@electronworld4996 You are SO right. With will power and brains, you only need the skill and the opportunity. Therefore, work substandard wages until you get the skill, then work substandard wage until you get the opportunity and you are ALL SET. However, failure to get any of those 4 elements and you are FAIRLY condemned to scamper around and take whatever job the master is ready to dish out. For you are just disposable. Seems like a good system.
@@electronworld4996 what's ironic about this whole conversion I actually did goto school to code(college, not bootcamp). That's not what I ended up doing, because pretty much coders are only needed in a small section of the country(lack of industry). So don't tell me to go get better skills, already been there and done that.
Most professions pay crap wages, it doesn't matter about getting better skills. There is a surplus of workers with very little wage protection is the problem.
You can spew your bs, but most people with half a functioning brain know the problem is people are getting taken advantage of. They have no other option but to starve.
Essential workers still are only making their usual, that's the thanks we get.
right.... we are running out of the n95 mask, so we have been reusing them for like a month.
They should go on strike and demand a higher pay now this is the time for it
If it keeps going like it is with trying to live off of government funds you will be the only ones with jobs when the well runs dry so hang in there.
We get paid in words.... cheap words...
My cousin got infected at his essential job and spent a month in icu. He was just released from rehab and his job is already calling him to see when he can be put back on the schedule.
They’re afraid of getting infected. And it shows that employers aren’t paying a decent wage.
It’s only for four months. Then it goes down big time. And no more health insurance.
That's what I was wundering.when they turn down there jobs because the price isn't right they should have the door slam shut after the unemployment check goes down and they suddenly want to take the offer. It should no longer be available to those that chose not to work when they where given the option
Like 100% down, plus tax time will come and they pay it back. What a clickbait title.
in most cases unemployment is pre-taxed
Well we have to see what happens with senate and the house with new bill
Andrew_Owens you can elect to have taxes taken out. That’s what I did.
1) Employers have the power to decline the unemployment requests if their employees turn down their job offers. That's what those letters are.
2) It's blatantly obvious that higher living wages are required.
3) It's also obvious that the employer interviewed is concerned about making money off of his employees, and not about their well-being, their valid health concerns, and their ability to make it through this crisis in one piece
4) It's disturbing to see the reporter and economic analyst talk down to people getting unemployment right now.
Exactly but they do know their answer is to slander hard working Americans beat us down

Shame to the Companies for paying so low wages, THATS the Problem!

And the huge companies getting huge bail outs. While regular ppl get a $1200 one time check
$15 minimum wage. That's what Bernie was proposing. He was called a communist.
Companies pay wages based on the skill and scarcity of qualified staff, employees aren't forced to accept a pay rate they take it voluntarily not to mention it doesn't take much money to have someone pour coffee into a paper cup. You do realize many people that work at these establishments can't even afford food there. without a major discount while you sit there with your family without a care in the world not knowing that your servers lights are off nor do you care you just tell her to get a better job so them who will serve you if they all get a better job?

Ash K your definition of a living wage sounds more like a “comfortable wage.”
Where I live someone could live well on about $15/hour.
Many people could cut down on about $1,000 a month in spending, but that would be too uncomfortable. Humans have always built wealth, but in America, we suppose we should start with it.
Raising minimum wage would be the solution for this
I agree! $50/hr minimum wage should be initiated by 2022!

The entire question is faulty. This isn't a problem of being paid too much from unemployment, most of these businesses even though opened don't yet have full-time work. No way do you go back to work to be a part-time worker.
Maybe it’s time to pay ppl enough to get by.
Maybe it's time for people to lower their standard of living till they can afford it.

@@randalott3784 Yep, it would increase the cost of the product. One of the biggest cons pulled on people is keeping costs low. Why? Who does it affect by doing that? It affects workers in a negative way by keeping their wages low. It doesn't give you cheap products, it steals your wages. The real people getting the benefit from it are the people not working those jobs, most likely the people pulling the strings. You are sacrificing your wages to give them cheaper goods.
Until the rest of the economy catches up with the inflation of housing the wages need to keep going up.

That will not help anything?! If we do that then the products we purchase will only increase in price. If we increase minimum wage it will help those workers momentarily but hurt anyone making above minimum wage.

People who work receive unemployment. When you work in the books you pay into unemployment. People in welfare/public assistance are not paying into unemployment benefits. There’s a difference
@LadyEquipped www.quora.com/What-is-the-difference-between-welfare-and-unemployment
@LadyEquipped grow up thats not true
People who get unemployment are workers so it sure as hell isn’t welfare it’s called unemployment and you’re required to work
How do you quit a job and still be eligible for unemployment??
Then pay your workers More.
When this is the case, something is fundamentally wrong with our system. Wages for workers need to be higher and executives paid less. The only way I see this to be possible is if everyone unionizes.
Wages suck. A part-timer can't even live in apartment that cost about $600. Making $300 a paycheck you just can't do it.
Raise the minimum wage and let the little man make some money
