Thanks for the books recommendation. It certainly helps for an engineer trained person with no sales background. For Microsoft, it was Bill Gates’s mom who knew and talked to IBM chairman of that time, and IBM was looking to hire to develop OS for its new PC. Basically all his stars are aligned to win the contract to supply MS-DOS to IBM PCs. Having the right connections at the right time are so crucial to get things really moving.

So much of startup advice is geared towards younger folks (eg. eat ramen and share a living space with cofounders).
Do you have any advice for folks with families in late 30s and 40s?

thanks for the content! Lately I've been realizing more and more that the CEO's personal branding pays huge dividends. As a consumer I think "hmm, do I trust this CEO to make great products?" But as CEO I think "oh geez...should I be making youtube videos..? and actually record myself talk...?"

every success story have their own unique secret sauce of success and every failure is an opportunity to learn a good lesson. It will be nice if you can share insight on finding that seed with the potential to grow into a giant. The simple question is asking who are the potential customers and if the idea and its value proposition is good enough to fulfil the unfulfilled need. How do you find the unicorn seed? Is there a set of questions to ask or there are many checks based on intuition, past experience or simply trying to dig deeper with challenging questions? Next is what are the necessary skills as a founder(s) at every stage of growth that you need to acquire to stay effective as a CEO?

Seems like a lot of success comes down to navigating the "people maze". Fortunately for Gates, the partnership worked because Mary Gates was friends with John Opel (source: www.nytimes.com/1994/06/11/obituaries/mary-gates-64-helped-her-son-start-microsoft.html)
Advice on establishing partnerships for a first time/relatively unknown founder?

Why so much focus on revenue based SaaS companies? Sure, they are far more likely to succeed, but that's because 90% of them are slapping a bit of tech on top of an ancient business model. Most of them will never be known to the general population, and will not change the world
