    Oh, I absolutely HAVE to try this! I'm an illustrator, and it would be great to try to make a picture entirely with home-made pigments!

    • @michaelaschmid
      @michaelaschmid  5 лет назад +29

      That would be amazing! Will you link me when you're done? I'd love to see that. When I was reading up they said berries work very well also, so the reds are covered, and different types of soil for the browns. The blues are a bit of a question mark for me. I had high hopes for the irises. They have so much pigment that they stained my fingers as I was picking them, but the color didn't hold at all. Next spring I want to try blue primroses and maybe corn flowers if I can get a hold of them.

    • @Monkeydominator
      @Monkeydominator 5 лет назад +8

      I definitely will! I guess it makes sense now why most old-time blues were made with minerals.... maybe flowers will always turn green? I'll have to look into it.

      @@Monkeydominator You're so right! It wouldn't make sense to import lapis lazuli from the middle east at huge cost and months of travel time, if they could just go out into the garden and grab a blue bell :) .... I'm still gonna try making pigment from grape hyacinths next spring. Just so sate my curiosity.

    Oh yeah- you can use beets- they make a beautiful reddish color, blackberries and blueberries for purple and blues, if you search for natural colors for yarn dying you will find a ton of flower and fruit recipes to make dyes and just add your fixatives (I'm a spinner!) 😁

    With pigments for green, though it's not as powdery I would like, I take the time to dehydrate my plants and process them from then. I use spruce or pine.
    I am hoping it will work with flowers (it works for Rose buds if you can tolerate the itchy powder when breaking them apart)
    You need more plant for that process, but if you're like me and live with other people, trying this method out might be cheaper and less invasive in the affairs of non-experimental family members. I live in an area with wild roses (east coast Canada) so I'm excited to see if this will work for me this spring

    • @MJBpeace
      @MJBpeace 4 года назад +7

      From pharmacy prespective, it is a very light powder, so it easily flies, also static, so it will stuck on your spoon. Once it is wet it won't fly anymore. You could cover your face with something, it is a good idea, but also I don't think this is that big of an amount that should worry you!
      (On dayly basis we don't wear a mask, but also use just a few spoon of silica at a time.)
      And this is does not look like the silica I'm talking about. That is Aerosil= looks cloud like. Hers is a much heavier powder- I think it rather is somekind of clay. She described it in another comment.

      Hello, i'll try to answer this for you. English isn't my native language either, it's german - just like the Uploader of the Video (at least i think so, based on the label of the "silica" bottle).
      Anyways, Kieselerde or what they called Silica, is "Diatomaceous Earth" - so it's non toxic in small doses and used in various ways such as diy-hairproducts, facemasks, or even added into food. (It kills bed bugs as well, still its nontoxic!) It also helps with a hurt stomach and many more problems.
      You see, it isn't needed to use a mask (at least if you handle it nowhere near a leafblower) & absolutely worth to give it a shot before using chemicals :)
      So, I thiiiink it's a translation error!
      To make sure you can do your own research: It's called "Silicea terra" in latin. Make sure to ask in a drugstore for further information and more education, pretty sure that they know more.
      Have a pretty day :)

    • @riza.1310
      @riza.1310 4 года назад +5

      actually do be careful cause diatomaceous (silica) earth can hurt your lungs, a lot of products will have warnings for it and i think you guys should be careful too "In addition to these problems, the diatomaceous earth can cause skin irritation and dryness. It can irritate the nose and nasal passages during the breathing. In case of large amounts inhalation, it can contribute to coughing and shortness of breath." please be careful if you do use diatomaceous especially if you have sensitive lungs!!

      Gum Arabic is the best way to bind into paint. But I’m sure there is a oil that can substitute decently as well, maybe try some honey and play with texture. Sun drying will change color, I recommend leaving out in the sun, but inside on a table or something so it doesn’t burn. Hope that helps! Just play around a little. Yep. The gum arabic is the most common binder for watercolor paints, linseed is the most common for oils. Though usually paints are mulled (by machines or with a muller on a glass surface if by hand) as opposed to mixing in a dish.
      Its easier to make more paint since the process is rather long and most 'recipes' of pigment to binder are figured or calculated for that way of paint making.

      I haven’t worked with candles before, so I can’t speak to that, but as far as soaps go, the alum are small, quite sharp crystals and I think they’d be too abrasive for use in soap. You could try drying flower petals, grinding them into a powder and use that to give color to soap... that might work?

    • @michaelaschmid
      @michaelaschmid  3 года назад +1

      I bought it on amazon. Most silica is a gel (people take it because it's good for hair and nails, I believe) but if you scroll down far enough, you should be able to find the powder. You could also use white clay powder, which is used to make clay masks, but it's a little more expensive.

    I think you might be able to dry the liquid in the oven, set at a low temperature, and cooked over several hours. it would take up electricity, but they would dry faster and maybe easier.

      absolutely! If you take a large flat dish and stick in the oven at lowest temp, it'd be done in a few hours.

    Hey Michaela! I love that you used silica as the base for the dye to bind to - I have been looking for an article online explaining how this works but cannot find one! It seems that silica is often not used for lake pigments - is there an article you referenced? Can you point me in the right direction to find more information about this method? Thanks so much!!

      Any white powder should work. I’ve heard ppl have good results using white clay powder, you could even try flour (just be aware there’s a risk of mold, so keep a close eye on it 😃)

    • @michaelaschmid

      @Random Songs In Locrian I haven't tried it, but I don't think salt will work, because it doesn't take on pigment. In watercolor, if you sprinkle salt on wet paint, it gives a cool effect where the water is sucked up by the salt but the pigment is left behind.

    I’m a couple of years late here but this is timeless information to me. Has anyone tried mushrooms for dyes? As a mushroom hunter (the edible kinds) I’ve read about it but wasn’t interested at the time. Something I’ll have to study and maybe inspire others. So many great suggestions in the comments.

    Do the pigments and paint end up browning over time? Another youtuber I watch tried to make paint from blueberries and the paint ended up turning brown over a couple of weeks, would their be a way to prevent that?

    • @michaelaschmid

      Yes, they do brown eventually. I noticed browning with this recipe after about four months. I made another experiment with a slightly tweaked recipe ( @ ) and after a year there's still no browning that I noticed. :)
