There's an old saying: If your enemy comes to duel you carrying a sword, he intends to hurt you. But if your enemy comes to duel you carrying a flute, he intends to kill you.
Some ronin turned to the monk life after losing their Lords or after deserting. So maybe the bandits actually found their match instead of a quick buck.
Shakuhachi is a bamboo flute in Japan that has a history of over 1,300 years in Japan. It’s a very simple instrument with just 5 holes in bamboo, but what is bumpy stuff on the end? This is actually the root of the bamboo, but why did they always use this part? One theory says that it might have been because people used the Shakuhachi as a weapon. During the Edo period, there was a Buddhism sect that used the Shakuhachi for their training. They would wear a basket over their face to hide their ego, and travel everywhere as they collected donations from the people. But because they would sometimes go through dangerous places they had a chance of being attacked by bandits. In such a situation, they would use the bumpy end of the Shakuhachi to fight. Yeah, I guess it would hurt a lot if you were hit by this. If you’d like to learn more about Japanese traditional culture, Kyoto, and social problems in Japan, please check out my channel & subscribe! *The content is based on personal studies and experience There is no intention of denying other theories and cultural aspects
Komuso!! I was thinking about him too. Gosh, I LOVED seeing him in different places across the world. It's so awesome to see an explanation over a decade later of something I had previously been too young to fully grasp.
I bet if I go through the game after playing it more than several years ago, I’ll understand more about Ōkami. That feeling of satisfaction when you finally get smaller details is great.
In Sekiro there is also a woman that wears a basket over her head in an ancient village. Altough she plays shamisen instead of shakuhachi. To put into context the setting of the story takes place during late 1500s of Sengoku era.
Fun fact: the thin rooty stalk of a bamboo is called rattan, and it's a popular material to use for both shakuhachi and eskrima sticks. They are very durable and tough. So Buddhist monks essentially have a musical fighting stick. One that can actually crack a skull.
Rattan is a climbing palm, not a part of bamboo. The outer appearance looks superficially similar, as does the grain structure, but they are very different plants.
In some versions they where actually bandits passing as travelers monks, hence why sometimes you can see them as enemies in videogames like Muramasa: The Demon Blade.
At that time the government was heavily restricting travel. These monks were one of the few group allowed mostly free travel because Buddhism. Many different groups would don that disguise so they could move from one place to another. There is one story that this practice became common enough that if the military saw you they would ask you to play a few tunes on the flute. If you couldnt they would execute you as a spy.

the name is actually a reference to its length! 1 shaku is an archaic measurement equivalent to 30.3 cm, or just barely under 1 foot. the 'hachi' refers to an extra eight-tenths of a shaku in length, thus the standard instrument is about 1.8 shaku long. hope this helps!

Reminds me of a less blatantly weaponized version of the Mandalorian Bes'bev; A flute forged out of Mandalorian iron with one end being sharpened to a point.
Never understood the reference until now. Just thought Law was trying to hide his identity from the Beast Pirates. Turns out he was playing a musician with out his flute.
I legit used this hat as soon as I got in a ghosts of tsushima this is awesome to learn some backstory of it, it reminded me of all the buckets I used in skyrim to cover guards heads 😂

Attacking Monks is a bad idea..
So... Technically...
Its a divine punishment... by bamboo
Conclusion: Dont dare to attack Monks

I thought it was the thing where poison darts are shot out of it 😂😅
Before watching this video I was expecting the flute would have been modified to blow poison darts at people by shinobi dressed up as a monk.
Love shakuhachi 🤗 Such a cool sound. I know a martial arts instructor (Shotokan) that also makes and play shakuhachi.
Not what I expected when you said secret weapon, but that works too.
Now imagine if its made in America, they'd just put a flute with one bullet in it and turned into a conceal weapon.
So these are the guys that backup Ryoma while singing Bakamitai
I remember first seeing this in the Shinobi 3 games in the 90's and I always thought the flute doubled as a blowpipe for ninjas.
This sounds like an Elden Ring NPC, friendly unless attacked.

Fun fact: ninjas used to disguise as these monks, and kill their target with said shakuhachi
The segment nearest to the roots is always going to be the densest, strongest part of a plant, any plant bamboo, trees, shrubs etc
I remember playing a ninja stealth action game where the monks used these as blowguns
"One of the five teachings on the Buddha is to not kill. Thankfully for you, this will only cripple you for life" _- Shaolin Monks_

“The real mastery starts where the ego ends”
When you multi-class as a bard and a monk
Every tool is a hammer, therefore every instrument is a weapon.
Am I the only one who thought that the monks would blow a poisonous needle through the flute?
If I can recall correctly they're Komusō monks. Very cool!
The bamboo near the root is very dense.

Bandit that uses gun: am I joke to you?
That Kaminaga Daisuke, i think he's the flutist in Wagakki Band. They're fusion of traditional folk music and modern rock

"What?"
"You know, just so nobody sees my face."
Wow this was really fascinating 😯 there is always so much history involved with instruments!
