• Welcome to the Bicol University Library System. This video will show you how to easily find scholarly and peer-reviewed journal, articles, and e-books from the online databases of the BU Libraries namely: Gale Academic One-File and Tritech Digital Media e-books. This instructional video is brought to you by the Reference and Information Services section of the Bicol University Library.
• To access the online databases, visit the BU Library System website at sites.google.com/bicol-u.edu.ph/buls/home. Go to “Resources/Collections” Click the drop-down button on ‘Electronic Resources’ and choose either Gale e-journal and e-books or Tritech Media e-books.
• Gale is a web platform used as an online electronic resource where e-books, periodicals, and other materials are stored and made available for easy access. It offers a variety of resources for education, lifelong learning, and academic research weather you are looking for (a) peer-reviewed articles from scholarly journals, magazines, newspapers, and chapters or full text of e-books.
• To request for the institutional password, fill-out the online form available at tinyurl.com/databasepasswordrequest. You can also send an email or message the Library’s Facebook page. Upon logging in using the requested password to access the Gale Academic One-file database, it will take you to its homepage wherein the Gale research products subscribed by the BU Library System are displayed.
• To access the e-book collection, click E-BOOKS in the product menu to browse the e-books perpetually owned by the library. The cover of the books (e-books in the script) are also displayed by discipline.
• You can also use the ‘Basic Search’ option. Simply type in the title of the book you want in the search bar and press ‘enter’ or click the search icon. By default, the result be sorted by relevance. You can also filter results by subjects, document type, publication title or languages, and content level. If you want to view further contents of the book, just click the title of your choice and this will show you the overview of the e-book. You can save it either by sending it to your google drive, Microsoft OneDrive, email, download or print.
• To search for scholarly articles only from periodical-type resources, click ‘periodicals’ in the product menu. This will take you to the sub-databases by discipline that the library subscribes to. If you want to limit your search by discipline, you can click ‘by sub database’.
• You can also search across all databases of periodicals including the e-book collection. To do this, click on the ‘cross search’ menu then click ‘gale power search’. From this page, you can customize the databases you want. Select all databases and include or exclude the e-book collection. After selecting the resources, type a keyword in the basic search field or use the Advanced search option and press enter.
• Articles, books reviews, and other materials which are part of the library’s subscribed e-journal and e-book collection can be downloaded in full text at no cost. However, for those materials coming from journals and e-books which the library does not subscribe to, only the Abstract or only some parts of the resource can be viewed or downloaded.
• Another online electronic resource that you can avail for free is the Tritech Digital Media E-books. This platform is available to all currently enrolled students and personnel of Bicol University. Tritech is an online platform that can be used to read and download over 7000 e-books with various genres or categories such as agriculture, engineering, technology, life sciences, business-related books, and others. The BU Library System currently perpetually owns a hundred and forty (140) Tritech Media eBooks which are downloadable for free.
• To access Tritech, check for the link and password sent to your BU email by searching the keyword ‘Tritech’ in your Gmail’s search bar. Go to the link, tdmebooks.com, and sign in using the unique password sent to you.
• For easy browsing, you can choose a specific category found on the right part of the website. It will show all of the eBooks’ cover pages and titles based on what you have chosen. For more comprehensive browsing, you can utilize the search bar by searching the book's title or its category. You can also search by utilizing the filters - either to sort the result, adding other keywords, selecting a sub-category, ranging the year of publication, and typing the author’s name. Clicking the book’s title will prompt its details such as name, author, publisher, publish year, and other details.
