I got to see homerun 62 with my Dad. It was a great memory for a time that was difficult for our family. Him commenting on his teammates not getting proper credit shows what kind of teammate he was.
Dude, at the very least, reinspired a dying Cardinal Nation back into the Greatest Fans in Baseball. But, really, he unintentionally saved his first love from that long fade into obscurity it had suffered since 1990. He's a pioneer. The first to usher in the 3 true outcome style of play. Although, he didn't have a bad average either.
The one thing that bothers me about the steroid situation, the writers knew, Baseball knew, and let it go. The game and everyone involved profited from steroids.
Yeah that's b******* anyway he played baseball yeah he he did wrong we all done things regret you can't change it I think you'll be inducted in Hall of Fame baseball
I was 17 in the summer of 1998 when I got to see him play once in St. Louis at a home game vs. Detroit. It was amazing. He didn’t hit a homer that game, but he hit one to the warning track and the pop from the crowd sent chills. I had bleacher seats, but I walked around the stadium and I wanted to get near the seats by the dugout, the usher let me through because he knew it was my first time there. He was and still is my hero. On a side note, he deserves the Hall Of Fame. Bud Selig, the HOF voters took one look at him in 1998 and saw he was double his size from his rookie year, it was obvious he was juicing, and they said NOTHING. They knew baseball needed that lift back up to success and they knew they needed the story of his home run record chase. So they said nothing, then they deny him the Hall. Disgusting.
I was there too. I remember his bat making this sonic boom noise and my father saying...."oh my God" as that ball sailed into the black. The highlight doesn't do it justice. You had to be there. It was a mammoth shot that got out in a blink of an eye.
The Hall of fame without Mark McGwire means nothing to me. It's a joke. There are steroid users in the hall, he is being punished for something that more than half the league was doing. He saved baseball, period.
I would like to mention that there are many suspected roid users in the HOF. Nolan Ryan being one of many. His Pitching coach and trainer was Tom House, he was and is an admitted steroid user. Nolan pitched until 46, had a crazy turn around at 39-40 and was training like a mad man. Many guys in the late 70’s and early 80’s were using them for sure. There was no testing, they did test for cocaine and other drugs, which you could say that anyone pre 1965 should have an asterisk, black and Latin players didn’t come in until 1947, they weren’t fully integrated until the late to mid 60’s, meaning that all the white players weren’t actually playing the best players available. Also, amphetamines were given out in the locker room. That is an absolute edge. It’s all horse shit. He and a large group of his peers belong. They were absolutely not the only ones taking them. They just had it taken out on them after they saved the game. Bless you Mark.
I ain't forgot about ya Big Mac. I know you worked hard. Yeah you juiced. So what. We ALL knew. Nobody cared then. When they were cashing huge checks off your hard work. I loved seeing it. Thanks for coming to st Louis. Love ya buddy.
Baseball needs to acknowledge the steroid era, perhaps a separate section of the HOF, and get these boys in. There was no rules or testing at the time. They still had to put in the work and play the game. Steroids alone aren't going to make the average Joe into Babe Ruth by itself.
True, but I feel like if there was even one player competing without the use of steroids during that time then it is unfair for them to make the Hall because they gained an ‘advantage’ over the competition. If everyone was using them then I think it’s okay.
@@KennethChristian-f1k Everyone wasn't using them. I agree with you completely. We can feel bad for the guys who didn't make it, but it just isn't fair to put them in.
Bonds, McGuire, and Clemens each had the qualifications to be enshrined well before PED's . They need to stop using the "Sainted" writers as HOF voters. The only way to properly evaluate players is comparing them to the players they competed against.
"The dudes that were the dudes"- you mean the cheaters lol- it's unfortunate that you cheated, that is unfortunate. People didn't forget about what you did Mark, kids like me, watched you, fell with baseball following your career , then you sat in front of congress, and not only make it clear that you cheated, but not even have the decency to be accountable for it- we remember, it ruined the game of baseball for us. Baseball was something special, after that it never was special again.
David Ortiz is in, but I love the sarcasm of the other players mentioned. In all seriousness, I believe all the players mentioned should be in. Roids do not make you see better, baseball is hand eye, Roids do help you recover for sure. They were also around a lot longer than Canseco would want us to believe. Many NFL players were using them in the 60’s and 70’s, Russian athletes were using a form of them as were German and I would imagine US athletes as early as the turn of the century. It is an absolute fact for Russia and Germany. Having said that, the players you listed above did things in baseball that were beyond incredible. As a lifetime baseball fan and a competitive player throughout my youth and into my 30’s, Roids do not work without putting in the work. Also, baseball was complicit, they only cleaned it up when Canseco’s book came out. I love this interview.
Whatever happened, happened? Are you serious? They juiced. They cheated. They don't deserve accolades for competing against those that didn't cheat. Such BS. He NEVER carried MLB on his back.
Sorry, the very character traits that made him decide it was okay to cheat are bubbling up in this interview. I’m a good guy. I cared about my teammates. We brought attention to the game of baseball. Yuck.
Mark McGuire earned his way to the Hall of Fame despite what the stupid sports writers think they’ve never played the game. They’ve never done anything to get to what it takes to play the game how the hell do they know they write for a living?
Everyone in life makes mistakes including myself. Some are bigger than others. Out of all the players who used steroids, Mark was the worst. Not because he used steroids. Let me explain. The day Mark broke Roger Maris single season HR record, he ran up to the stands & hugged Roger Maris's widow & sons. This was showcased in the TV movie about Roger Maris's life called "61". To me, this was the worst thing that happened in MLB. Knowing you cheated. Knowing you took steroids. Then embracing the family of Roger Maris in a show of support, like you cared. This was disgusting.
@@Wanderlust598 Because he used anabolic steroids that causes health problems later in life? Because he wanted to hit more HR's so he could make more money then the millions he was already getting? Because he wanted to break Maris's record? So this is better??? The guys a fake phoney fraud in my opinion.
I’m not sure he can be elected based on past accomplishments. As he said himself in front of confress, he is done talking about the past. Therfore, so should we
My childhood hero, Mark McGwire.

I watched mark hit 49 hr as a rookie he did not need any help
So then why did he juice?
He deserves the HOF. I hope it comes while he's alive and can give a great speech.
Yet they let Barry Bonds be in the Hall of Fame it took both of them to bring back baseball doing the same thing. It's disgusting
@@gotsouced4943bonds isn’t in he missed the cut
I hope he makes it. Everyone said he was a Hall of Fame player when he was active and I have nothing but good memories of watching him
Bigger better stronger era

1998 was wild
Get mark in the hall of fame great player
He absolutely deserves to be HOF and my childhood hero made a kid from the Navajo Nation reservation believe anything is possible
GREAT guy. He was Great for the game.
No you won't Mark, but you entertained millions of people....👍

For all you know they all used Steroids there entire careers to some extent
a true hof
The grain of your bat is engraved in the ball
I like Mark as a person and thats why id vote him in over Booby Bonds
Sammy Sosa and McGwire deserve the HOF
Baseball was the best when McGwire was playing!
Bonds needs to get in 1st than mark is next
In this soft sensitive culture he will not get in but in my opinion he deserves it Pete rose to 💯
1986 to 2001
time to heal and move on let them in
I have the 500 ft hr you hit in shea
I'm Kane Hodder who played Jason Voorhees? Mark McGwire and I are first cousins.
Don't forget about how special 98 was. We will NEVER have that again because this guy committed the original sin, cheated to put record out of reach.
In his Major League Baseball career
He's not getting in and I'm okay with that. Get over it y'all.

When the HOF opens up a Steroid wing, Mark will get a call. If and when that does occur, Pete Rose better get a call.

He should answer all questions with "Im not here to talk about the past"
Put him in. The whole era used them. He came clean eventually and was always a good teammate and was widely praised for his time as a hitting coach.
Yeah, let´s get all those guys in as part of the "maybe" remorseful steroids users era...as we ought to.
