VISEU - Church of Mercy (Igreja da Misericordia)

The Igreja da Misericórdia, or Church of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia, is located in front of the Cathedral of Viseu. It has a rococo façade, from the second half of the 18th century. The Church of Misericórdia began to be built in 1775, with the master bricklayer António da Costa Faro being responsible for the work and perhaps also the author of the design of the facade. The church has three Neoclassical style altarpieces, on the throne of the main altarpiece rests the image of Our Lady of Mercy. In the church, the following stand out: the sculptural group Visitação, by the Visean sculptor José Monteiro Nelas (1875), and the paintings Visitação and Nossa Senhora das Dores (1885), by the painter also from the same city, António José Pereira (1821-1895).
