Giant Gourami or Osphronemus goramy gourami is a member of the gourami family, and is native to sout east asia, it is found in large slow moving rivers and canals.
This a famous food source in many countries of sout east asia and is also farmed and harvested for this purpose.
This fish is used to fight weed in ponds and other water reservoirs because its an efficient plant eater.
The most amazing feature of this fish is its Labrynth organ, which enables it to breath in moist air. Now its not a backup to gills, which it can voluntarily turn on and off as oxygen level is low in water, both the gills and the labrynth organ work together to fulfill the need for oxygen for this fish. The Giant Gourami can grow upto be 28 inches, it comes in different colors but the most common colours are redish white and grayish blue. Males have slim and less defined lips while females have stubby lips and are easily recognizable.
They need at least a 300 gallon aquarium, usually people buy it as a cute little 4" fish as baby but within months its double that and in a year or so can reach its full size, and most of the people dump it in local rivers and dams which usually results in death for this fish. This fish can turn aggressive to other fish if kept in a smaller tank.
Its diet is plant based but can also consume meaty diets. When its younger you can feed it shrimps, blood worms and earth worms but as it matures a more balanced vegetarian diet will be needed such as cucumber, lettuce and spinach.
The breeding phase is a very exciting phase for any hobbyist, if you have a pair of giant gourami and you see the male showing breeding behaviors, lower down the water level to 8 inches and raise the temprature to 28 degrees Celsius, the male will build a bubble nest and the female will lay its eggs in it. Once the eggs are laid remove the female as the male defends the eggs aggressively even from the females. The eggs will hatch in 24 hours turn of the aquarium lights and feed the babies with brine shrimp
So this is a vert intresting fish and displays signs of intelligence. When ever i enter my private gallery, its the first fish to greet me with fast flapping fins and responds when i touch the glass. It is also used as an ingredient in many dishes but we wont talk about that as i cant imagine it being a food for me.
In short if you want a pet as gorgeous as a giant gourami it will live for 20 years if kept properly.

2- the diet has variety vegetables, pellets and crickets or other smal insects
3- your fish is stress free and doesnt have agressive tank mates
