I bought the exact same 39mm explorer you feature here, with the applied hex logo - the applied hex logo is the only thing I'm not mad about - it can be distracting from the hour hand, as the shiny hex vaguely resembles the mercedes hand. I'm even thinking about sourcing a no logo dial and getting it installed, or selling this one and buying a no logo, or one with the script logo, or even the printed logo. Was thinking about the 36mm version too, but I love the domed saphire crystal... The V1 with the faux old lume looks cool too...
I bought the 39mm Version 1 with the printed dial last year and wear it daily, just love it. At this point wiht the new Tudor Ranger being released I think i will wait to see if there is a homage from SM, which I think would be incredible. Great video!
While the 39mm indices are applied, they are the same font as the 1016 style and still have that 1016 feel IMO as opposed to the Tisell homage which uses font like the modern 21470
I feel like the 39mm is the modern take and the 36mm is the retro feel. I have the Tiffany dial in now and it's amazing! actually feels really similar to my Rolex OP 36mm
Must agree, that domed crystal really sets the watch off. Also, irrespective of the size difference, the applied indices do make the 39mm look like a grown up version.
I wonder if they will ever come out with a 36 mm.. with applied indices. That would be something I would opt for otherwise it would be the 39. It's a beautiful watch thank you for bringing it to us.

I actually like/prefer applied indexes, the smaller bezel proposition and the dome crystal of your 39mm, but prefer the 36mm in size as it's a dial only watch... --> thankfully, SanMartin has issued a 36mm with all the good things of the 39.
@@eagles4757 nope, I am good on this aspect, I have Omega SM300diver and an Aquaterra, a Tudor BB 58 guilt, a Zenith Captain and a JLC Reverso, a few "vintage" Rolex OP 6084 and airking 14010, Omega Seamster and a Genève, a Zenith sporto, a Cartier basculante and a Piaget protocole. I appreciate these homages for what they are, great quality for the price, well made, and I can wear them without having to baby them, while having a vintage look but better and newer specs.

I am a sucker for explorer homages and this is a good one. It has a classy elegant simplicity to it and since my likelihood of acquiring the real thing is pretty slim, I might have to get the moths out of my wallet… I have the bliger which is very decent.
The Bliger is good for the price you pay for it, but this is on a whole other level. I have most of the AliExpress Explorer homages; Bliger, Matic and multiple San Martin's now too. This is definitely the best one of the bunch.

My grandmother said buy a £100 watch . I knew nothing about watches and chose between a just under £100 Omega Constellation and a £105 ( ! ) 1016 Explorer. Both new watches. I chose the Omega not wanting to spend over the £100. Talk about making a mistake .... I quickly gave up on the Omega and ended up with a Seiko GMT style Air Wave . Great watch.

I’d go with the 36mm. I prefer a flat crystal and I also think the thicker bezel looks better.Reminds me of Tissot gentleman. Also, the better movement is something I’d like. I already have an Orient Ray 2 and from what I understand the 39mm uses the same movement, which I am getting around +15 per day. I don’t think that is very good. I hear the Chinese eta knock off in the 36mm is around +-2 which sounds really good.
Nice review. After about 4 years being really into watches, despite the wonderful things I hear, I still haven’t pulled the pin on a SM. I don’t know why, everytime I go to buy one a little voice in my head is saying “they’re just designs from famous companies” and it’s really annoying because i can’t see past that. And it’s not even that I haven’t had a homage watch, I have. I think nowadays, watches even the homage ones are starting to creep up in price. I live in Australia, so the Aussie dollar is pretty weak, so that also doesn’t help. The explorer 1016 and the modern one, are the only expensive watch I’d ever want if I could afford, and I love the classic explorer layout. Do SM do these explorers with an oyster style case better than others?
I’m with you on that. Applied indices should be in all options. And I am not a fan of domed crystals. In reading the reviews we are a minority in preferring flat crystal. I’m not sure why so many like dome crystals. They distort at angles and to me reminds me of an old grandfather’s watch.
It’s all a bit moot as my new AD actually sold me a new 36mm Explorer last week. 2 day waiting period, but I had bought a JLC Reverso from them at the end of last year. But I had actually bought a Steinhart Ocean Adventure Classic 39mm just to see if I could like a Explorer dial.

I do not like the crystal. I'd much rather have it flat and slimmer. I have it with the printed indecies and if the crystal was flat id get it but not with the domed one. They are getting to be excellent watches.
That's fair enough, we all have our own preferences. I personally really like domed crystals myself. Either way though, as you said they do make excellent watches.

The first thing I noticed is the female end links so that's a hard no right there. Just prefer the aesthetic of male end links so there you go. I do have three big San Martin diver watches but they all have male end links.

Agreed . Eyes are just drawn to big shiny hex unproportionate to the dial , but outside that it seems they've done very well in all other aspects & not generally being a SM fan credit where credits due.

You make that sound like it's a moral decision or something. Not for me. I'm just glad that there are people out there that will allow me to share in this refined styling, even not having 8,000 dollars laying around for an accessory piece. I have no problem with the name on the dial. No one has written "Rolex" on it. Matter of fact, San Martin is so proud that it is their's, they put their name brand on it three times! That doesn't sound like someone trying to pass it off as anything but what it is.

The way I see San Martin now is more like a microbrand, than an AliExpress one. They've leveled up and are now competing with them I think.

39. The applied indices fill the dial better. The 36, although smaller, appears to have too much open space on it. The domed sapphire looks great too.

I think they offer a custom dial option, but obviously you have to pay a bit extra for that.

The stores set their own prices, so they can vary a bit. The stores I got mine from I always include the link to in the video descriptions.

Is there a difference between the size of the actual dials on the 36mm and 39mm? They look the same size.

You make that sound like it's a moral decision or something. Not for me. I'm just glad that there are people out there that will allow me to share in this refined styling, even not having 8,000 dollars laying around for an accessory piece. I have no problem with the name on the dial. No one has written "Rolex" on it. Matter of fact, San Martin is so proud that it is their's, they put their name brand on it three times! That doesn't sound like someone trying to pass it off as anything but what it is.
