Hello there!
With the channel growing, is inevitable to get some good old hating. One of the most triggering topics is the cost of gear.
Lot of people is genuinely interested in knowing how to make a living doing music so rather than focusing on the ones that called me in the funniest way, I wanted to share my perspective on this line of work.
I will break down the main source of income that I have and will give you few advices on how to start this career.
Enjoy!

I often see comments about how transparent and honest you are. What makes you successful is that you are able to be these things without being annoying. It’s what makes your content endearing. Also your sensibility and integrity. I hope that made sense.
Thank you so much, really make me happy to read your kind words
I agree!
Federico's videos are on my top favs!
Transparency is a gift not only to those who listen, but in providing honest depth into your humanity. Thank you for taking the time to break this down. In my early forties now, I've been a creative professional most my adult life. I can remember in my younger years people would perceive my freedom as some sort of glamour. What they didn't see is the sacrifice and comforts that I gave up in order to do my work. I have most definitely dumpster dived for food in order to create. It was all well worth it as that determination resulted in my career. Sometimes people will ask me where to start and I normally say, "Did you have a lemonade stand when you were a kid?" The hustle and the networking is a very real thing. Keep at it, good sir. I really enjoyed hearing your insight here. I'd love to chat sometime.
I’m glad to see it’s working out for you. I’ve watched your channel grow and it keeps on growing (the mixer!!). It’s good to see honest and kind people ❤
Thanks so much
Your honnesty is refreshing. Your character is exquisite (a bearded muscled lumberjack who actually hides a gifted electronic music player). The way you express yourself, the slow pacing of your videos (you don't use cuts in your videos, but they still sound so fluid and easy to follow). I've discovered you long time ago, and was wondering how long you'd need to grow and audience, fearing you'd get exhausted and would stop producing contents, before you'd reach the threshold of viability. I am so happy you crossed the 20k mark by today. Keep it running, just the way you do. You found your own style, your own niche in what is already a niche. Kudos!
thanks for your kind words! Some day I feel I am going nowhere, honestly. I am happy that lot of people relate with my videos and that keeps me working! Ciao!
Whether you yourself make living at making music or not, just keep doing what you're doing because you inspire and your music is great!
I appreciate that!
🖤❤💛💙greetings again........your intro touched my heart, the people who says these things are not true lovers or music lovers, rhey are jealous and pay no attention to them, you do not need to justify anything you have, my father had 6 synthesisrs and many music equipment he, was not rich.....be proud and block these people......the genuine people will never say such things.....respect to you🖤❤💛💙i apologise i could not bring my self to listen to you justify your self....❤❤...music is the love and energy of LIFE....it is an ART FORM and a PASSION,,,. money is not everything...
This was absolutely beautiful. Thank you for the honesty and showing that it all comes from just putting in the work. Much respect!
Thanks Kevin!
Thank you so much for this. I definitely asked how you are able to do the things you do on a previous video, and i really hope you were not offended. You said everything so well in this video, and I really have so much respect for you. This was so well done and said. I love your music and videos. Just finished your newest spotify release, and it was fantastic. Keep it up man. You chose the right path.
no offense taken actually that kind of question pushed me to make this video, I think is an important topic.
Really great to hear you talk so openly about this 🙌
thanks!
I honestly stumbled across your channel and didn't know you, but I really enjoyed your transparency and honesty. As a young French audio engineer/artist who just moved to Boston, USA, I relate very much to your story ! Wish you the best :)
Thanks and good luck to you mate!
This is such a great video. almost like you are having a friend to friend chat in a pub or sth. very few people talk with numbers and I appreciate that honesty
:)
Been looking for a video like this for a while, thank you so much for putting it down into words, really appreciate your honesty and transparency
Glad it was helpful!
I'm halfway through the video and with that it's enough for me to tell you that this video is the best my friend. Clearer than water. I saw some videos of other youtubers talking about the same thing but right now this is the best, you don't hold anything back. That's why I'm going to subscribe.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Man, you are one of the coolest youtubers for me, totally resonate with the things you are saying here, and I can tell you have what you have cause of your hard work, never had a doubt about it. I connect with the organic way you use your machines and I really love your humility and good vibes when you talk about stuff, just to hear you speaking about any topic seems interesting. The music you do has these ethereal uncomplicated and beautiful feel (can't put words to music but I did my best😉), as I do mainly live music for yoga, meditation and dance I totally connect with it. I would love to collaborate some day with any of the world music instruments that I play🤘
Hey Sebastian, thanks for your kind words, really appreciate that!
Thanks for your honesty. One thing I'd like to say to your viewers is that it IS also possible to make a living from the "art side" of your music. It really depends on many things, including personal skill set and motivation, personality, location (as in where you live), and many other factors, but not all creative musicians are good at content creation or presentation. I have been making a living from my own music since 2007, and before that I worked in many original bands and projects (since the late 80s). I personally suck at RUclips and have never pursued it as part of my career. There is no one-size-fits-all model in the music business. But whatever path you choose, most people will never realise how much work goes into it. Hold on to the ones who do!
Im sorry if I have not been clear: YES you can do an amazing living only doing art, maybe I should have specified better. My advices probably are aimed to the people that struggled like me with placing their art and had to find a parallel way to make an income!
@@OoraMusic It wasn't a criticism at all, I think you did a great job with this video. It's really important information, not only for other creatives, but also for your supporters.
I found this video at the right moment, as I want to switch from my after effects/post production job to make more music and personal music videos, in short be more creative. Your testimony is relevant on every point, including the most personal ones. It's really inspiring, makes me want to keep going. Thank you for sharing in such a honest way.
thanks for the kind words!
Great video thank you for sharing. Really appreciate the honesty. Ive been trying to grow my music channel for years now and cant seem to get any traction. Your my favorite content creator/ musician and I am always looking at your videos for inspiration. Keep it up!
It is pretty complicated now and is getting harder every year. All platforms are trying to monetize on creators and is super complicated to make space for yourself. I never went viral and never had a breakthrough video so far, and is 2 year I am constantly releasing stuff!
Serious props to you being super candid 🙏
:)
Thank you very much for your sincerity, it is very appreciable. I have been following your work since the beginning of the pandemic and I love seeing everything you have been achieving with your effort and talent
You are so welcome and thanks for your support
Thanks for sharing all this info! Also, good for you for working hard, and standing by that. It's something so many people miss in our over priveledged world today. As the old saying goes, "most people don't recognize opportunity because it's dressed in overalls and looks like work".
So true! Sometimes is jealousy that speak for us. The reality is most successful people are hard hard workers.
You are the best! Thanks for telling us your thoughts and I’m so impressed by your strength to, every week, show us new ways of creating music. Keep your good work up. Later on, when I have more time, I will try your patrion-offer!
Thanks Peter!
Great video, I love the transparency! When I had to make decision about career I just choose IT job and making music on side for fun and myself. It's nice to see someone who transitioned to the music as a job.
That's exactly the road I took and I love it. Of course it would be nice to spend more time with my real passion. But I know I'm not made for the struggle of an artist's life and I enjoy that I can approach my music making without any pressure to make it commercially viable.
Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks for sharing this Federico, it's really interesting. Although your financials are none of our business, it's impossible for us not to aspire to have at least some of the amazing equipment in your collection, so we naturally wonder what it takes to get to where you are.
My main takeaway is that you've gotten here by seriously grafting and sacrificing, and by having an admirable amount of drive and passion. And I'm very glad you have, so we get to listen to your awesome music and thoughtful process.
Thanks Alex, you got it right!
this was really cool. hearing anyone talk about their life and finances is interesting, and even more so for an artist. thanks for sharing, this is quite personal and not many people do this.
thanks!
Thank you for these interesting words, it changes from the usual videos but I found this essential point. Always surprising to see that people you admire sometimes also have a lack of confidence, but it's comforting to move forward ! Thanks again and see you soon ;)
You'd be surprise man!!
Utmost respect for your transparency and all your hard work! Very informative to understand some of the compromises and effort required to build something like this.
You can also see why RUclips demos with affiliate links are so prolific - prob the best bang for buck if you haven’t established yourself as an artist.
thanks !!
i love the honesty here, thanks for being so real.
You are so welcome!
One of the most interesting YT videos I´ve seen for a long long time! Thank you! Enjoy your day! Rolf
Really enjoy following your journey. Glad you are happy doing what you’re doing 😊
Thank you so much!
Very good insights there. Money is some sort of taboo these days and should be discussed more often. It was really nice to hear from you on this matter.
I agree
Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing your story with us. Kudos for handling it with such positive attitude. Keep sharing your work with us 🙏
Thanks!!
Thanks for taking the time to make this video! Very interesting (real) story. Very relatable (as a Computer Artist).
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for making this video and being so down to earth and honest and transparent. I have wondered for years how people do this, and you gave me a peek into how it can work. Much success and more success to you good sir. Cheers!
Thanks for your your kind words!
That is the first video of yours that I saw and I subscribed immediately. Love your honesty.
This video is also a bit about me - I am almost 40 years old, always wanted to make music, bought tons of gear (that I don't even know how to use lol), created a small bedroom studio and thinking what to do next! One thing is sure - I didn't quit my job, that would be a suicide, a very foolish decision.
I would never advise that, for sure. I had a day job as long as I needed it. dont put yourself in a stressful position!
Your humbleness and relaxed yet very focused style is really enjoyable. You keep on the topic of music which this vid is, some RUclipsrs when above a certain following size use their platform to argue their politics etc and start to not respond much to viewers. ( maybe at a hundred thousand subs they need a secretary, but then the viewer also loses the interaction with the vid maker ) There is probably an optimum size to grow to for your channel in some ways and your niche may have a good limit that is sustainable for you both financially and interactively. Short version keep being you! :)
this is very true :)
Oora, you work hard and devote your time for what you have and knowledge you share. No need to justify yourself to the green goblins. Respect 🙏
thanks!
Great video for both your audience and other smaller content creators like myself. Thank you for your honestly and efforts!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this video Oora, it was great to watch, and I took notes...lots of notes. And thank you for your music, it is very deep. Greetings from Chile!
Glad it was helpful!
Massive respect - the way you continue to make information and ideas accessible to this community is unparalleled.
I appreciate that!
Great story ! Keep what makes you happy and inspire the people like us. Reward will come automatically with hard work done . Like in all other business. Key is to hold money back . Only spend in important stuff to get further. Greets
thanks !
very much respect you for doing this and being so transparent. good example!
thanks!
Nothing but gratitude and respect for doing this - great video
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for such a candid video! So helpful! looking forward to seeing your other videos!
thanks!
This video is information gold.
Thank you so much.
You have taught me so much in a short stretch of time and for that I am forever grateful.
The way you break things down, this video included, is top tier and it shows not just your deep understanding, but also passion and a good heart.
Thank you.
Currently planning my RUclips channel and the content I want to share and make.
Life is good.
Awesome you show a honest and transparent story.
thanks
Love the mentality! I wish you a lot of success!
thanks!
I decided to leave a comment because I felt the honesty and wanted to thank you for this! Very much helpful. I definitely will watch any further video you make like this one. 🤘🏻🍻 keep up the good work and the English doesn’t really matter.
Thanks Eman!!
This is a fantastically informative video - appreciate your art Oora - we've got to be so busy these days to eek out a musical living. X
:)
Caspita, bravissimo. Stefano :)
grazie stefano!
Very inspiring, great to see how you have grown over the short time I have been watching, keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
@@OoraMusic it was from watching you on the Performer,I had to get one myself, now my favourite synth! Next to the DRM IV
You're probably one of the most honest music producers I've ever come across.
thank you so
much
Thanks for making this video and really, what you said helps me believe that I can eventually work for myself doing what I love!
You can do it!
Nice vid! Great to hear that I don’t need to leave my job, because everyone said that I have to if I wanna be good in music and…no! All my life I was sitting on two chairs, being photographer or musician, I worked a lot to get money to my GAS. And the interesting thing the more I focusing on music and less on job, my career is going uphill.
Really, the was a lot of moments I wanted to leave my education or profession, and things turned well, so I decide that I just don’t have to choose and keep working in two lives.
well, is fun that we both have the same path!
Thank you so much!!! This is so encouraging! When we are alone we forget that it can be possible! Thank you!!!
:)
Thank you for sharing your story. I appreciate your honesty and directness. It is refreshing.
Thanks for watching!
This was an interesting video, and explaining yourself and how you made income was informative and did get me less upset about the GAS. You seem to have all the newest expensive things and I did wonder how you had so much gear often. I always find your small amount of gear (1-2 synths) focused videos to be my favorite and also these kind of human connection/transparent ones too. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for sharing your perspective. Very detailed and honest. Much appreciated! 🙏🏼
thanks!
Great advice! Love your style: Honest and humble!
thanks!
Amazing video you are such a good musician in the Eurorack space and you are so likable aswell
Thank you!!
I find it funny how we have so many things in common. I love music and music gear and every time I want something new i cut costs on many things and many friends when they see pictures they think I'm making big money. But same as you i spend the lowest possible amount on clothing (H&M helps haha) and still at my age no car. Love your music and your videos Oora!
:) brother!!
I like listening to you, I think you're real, genuinely an artist.
thank you!
This is a really good talk actually. I needed that.
thanks!
Great video and also great to hear your thoughts. Some of what you say makes absolute sense and some made me realise where I have gone wrong to a lesser or greater degree. But not putting all your eggs in one basket is the main thing I took from this so thank you. Ciao.
Thanks mate, happy we can relate!
good honest video well explained. nice to get a clear breakdown of some possible revenue streams
Glad it was helpful!
you're an artist!
Thank you for your honesty and excellent advice.
Thanks Marc
Really insightful stuff. I'm becoming a big fan. Keep it up.
Glad to hear it!
Thanks for the advice and video. I am same as in I don't believe in myself but I have a friend who has kept me going in music. So important to have that. Last 3 years I have been just learning how to actually record and make music on the computer, which has been hard as I'm limited to space and other things but I am committed to learning and every day i have progressed. Maybe one day i can make a living making music. I would love to make music for film. I have saved and now have instruments that can make good music. Take care
I wish all the best for you! keep pushing!
@@OoraMusic always mate 👍
I respect that you did this and have lived in different countries. That is something I have been considering very strongly lately. I suspect I could not learn a second language as well as you have though, so that could make things a little tricky. Interesting video.
Well if you speak English you 'll be fine :)
Wow so good❤ You gave a ton of useful information!
Glad it was helpful!
Bless you and bless this video. So very helpful and reassuring for us artists & content creators!
Glad it was helpful!
Lovely video. I am doing this now. I feel the NYC blues so much as well. I lived there in the 90’s when it was affordable, but it is a lot more relaxing here in Portland Oregon.
wish I could have experienced ny in the 90
Thank you for sharing brother, I really appreciate your work! I am happy I found your content. You are kind and honest person. Be you brother
I appreciate that, thanks!
Great talk!! Love you man!!!
thanks mate!!
you are a good honest man, thank you for your hard work.Terence
Thanks!!
Impressive video and GraZie for sharing your inside information. Truly enjoying your work .
Thanks a lot!!!
Great video!
Yeah, this is my same business model and professional progression (I, too lived in NYC as a young adult). I sort of came up with the business model on my own through trial and error so it’s great to see it being echoed with such similarity.
We have pretty much the same revenue streams except that I earn much less in affiliate than you, but my Patreon does more, mostly through top-tier one-on-one lessons. Though, my patron count dropped considerably over the last 6 months, but that’s due to an injury that kept me from working much of that time.
And then my gigs often pay well as I’ve been doing that for a while and I’ve been lucky to get some good sync deals so I’d add licensing to the list of streams. Oh, and last year my music streaming picked up considerably and stayed fairly consistent, which was welcome.
I’m a new subscriber to you, so I haven’t followed your growth on this platform, but it seems that it’s been very strong, and that’s likely due to the rate that you’re publishing.
I find it tough to crank out videos every week and have never been able to sustain it more than a month 😆
Last year I injured my spine and stopped working for many months. I’m grateful to many of my patrons who continued to support throughout. Bless them.
So if you’re curious what can happen when you stop grinding, well, yes it drops, but maybe not as much or as quickly as you might fear. That said, I’ve found that the biggest challenge might be giving myself the time and space and inactivity needed to create the art I want to create while juggling the need to be consistent with content creation to keep the machine running.
Maybe I should make a part two to this where you and I do a live, on-camera conversation about the creative challenges between content and art?
Such a pleasure to have you here. I follow you since long time, both musically and as a creator. Your joy of patching videos have been probably the most influential for me. Would love to do a chat together, I think could be super interesting!
Very helpful insights and tips, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks, Oora! Glad I stumbled on your channel via RUclips recommendation. Subbed!
Welcome aboard!
Thank you for sharing your life with us!
My pleasure!!
Thank for sharing. It's rare an artist share his honest view for how to make his living and I generally don't care much about the others's living. I just know that it's not easy for everybody and I am not interested in any easy ways anyway. I love your music and how the contents were made. It also explains well that you have a photographer as your creative background. Hoping for a collaboration one day with an artist like you in future. You have a good heart. That's all what matters.
thank you so much mate. Lets keep being in touch , sooner or later when I will have a less hectic life we can talk!!
@@OoraMusic Sure. Thanks for your kind reply. I will share with you my ongoing project sometime in June/July Looking forward to the sharing of your creative journey! Ciao! 😎✨
Great video as well :) I work a day job currently, and as much as I wish I could afford to do music full time, it's nice to have a job that I can fund my work with. I just schedule my time well, do 2 hours early morning before work, and another hour once I'm home.
P.s. I noticed we were on the same remix album for Matt Robertson :) small world.
Oh loved Matt album, and yes if you can manage your time with a day job you are fine!
I'm on 300 subs so I'll probably stick to the day job, but thanks for those insights! Very interesting and I appreciate the honest analysis.
thanks!
Grande!! Grazie per questo video genuino. Sei ancora più bravo
Grazie Pedro
great video, great way to see things, great mind... ✊✊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for sharing your experience. ❤
you are welcome
Cannot be emphasized enough to live below your means. I worked hard for 12 years straight to finally make it to a lucrative non-music career that allows me to fund my music passions. Even though I’m making around 200k+ in a low cost of living are, I choose to live in the cheapest house I can find, drive a beat up car that’s paid off and eat on a budget. All so I can keep up with the cost of pro studio gear.I wanted a career in music when I was younger, but now that I’m more acutely aware of how not glamorous it is under the surface, I can live comfortably pursuing it purely out of passion and make it into a small secondary stream of income if I can pull it off. You’re an inspiration and I hope to start my own channel later this year once I get my new studio finished.
Thanks for sharing! I was in a similar place with my photo career. Now is a fraction of what I used to earn, but at least im doing what I want :D
Excellent video. You communicate very easily and effectively. Good wisdom.
Glad you think so!
🖤🖤 very inspiring, and only makes me want to leave to London, as my money here disappears!
Very interesting video, thanks! I am planning to switch to freelancing soon (designer/musician) so this helps to put things into perspective :)
all the best !!
Thanks for the honest video.
Always!
