Although this is based on a true story, the truth is a bit different, for example Karen was having an affair with Paulie for years, Tommy was killed but his body was never found and various other details that were changed for the movie. Still one of my favourite films, the acting, directing and the score are top tier. Enjoy your reactions.

To be made is to be officially inducted into a family as a soldier, which is the first official level... Henry was an associate, meaning he was not made... soldiers could run their own crew of associates... Soldiers report to a captain, who's in charge of a group of soldiers, which Paulie was... Each family has a bunch of captains who have crews of soldiers who in turn can have crews of associates... At the top is the Don/Godfather/boss... Beneath him are the underboss & the consigliere (counselor)... You should watch mob documentaries... It's crazy and it ACTUALLY happened and it's interesting

One of the most interesting things about this movie is how quickly we are seduced by gangster morality and get into the gangster mindset. It’s a good example of moral relativism that is one of humanity’s shortcomings, and most of us are subject to it from time to time. We are horrified by the opening scene, but by the time we get to the events in the bar, we feel it’s justified (or at least understandable). This is reinforced by how we react to Tommy “going too far” when he murders Spider.

    • @GYG-uv3ol

When Tommy killed Spider, that's when I really hated the character. Joe Pesci was great in the role, but after that I was glad when Tommy got whacked!

Tommy was crazy in real life (joe pesci) it was said that whenever he got a new weapon or fire arm, he would go out and use it on people in the streets for random targets..... they water downed the violence for the film but it was still enough to give you an idea how horrible this life really was..

Sadly for Henry, he was only in Witness Relocation for a while before he and his wife separated. Then he got pinched a bunch of times for some small time stuff. Despite his lavish life, he pretty much died alone and penniless. It's a cautionary tale.

Henry hill was only ever a thug.
The mobs organization at the time didn't allow for him to move up but he wasn't really involved in most of the big crimes, once pinched the fbi have him Intel to use against his former associates.
None of the big players of the time have verified any of his story most didn't know who Henry hill was before he was an informant and those that did remember him being a drug addict and always short on money.
Great movie, but I hate how much of the story Henry a POS snitch who was a POS before he snitched got to craft and embellish about his life story.
Don't be like Henry hill in the movie and def don't be like him in real life.

As much a drama as it is biography, comedy, documentary, Aesop's fable, and extended music video. Scorsese has it all.
"Those people are sleeping well tonight." This always seems to be the moral lesson of his films.
I kind of figured this was part of his American Story series, along with _Casino,_ _Gangs of New York,_ and _The Aviator,_ that follows the rise and fall of a character like it's a fairy tale documentary.
Other films that I haven't seen anyone else cover yet:
    - Jeremiah Johnson
    - Three Days of the Condor
    - Taxi Driver
    - Miller's Crossing
    - Patriot Games
    - Clear and Present Danger

My favorite mob movie and in my top 3 or 5 favorite movies in general. The actor who plays the waiter that Tommy smashed the bottle on, was an actual member of the gambino family. Same with one of the guys in the background at the table where Tommy is asking "how he's funny", one of the actors sitting by Henry, had ties to the colombo family. He was also in The Godfather. Also, the guy who plays the prosecutor at the end is the actual one in real life.

Mob history: The main actors were based on real life mobsters of the Paul Vario crew in the Lucchesse family: Paulie was Paul Vario, Henry was Henry Hill, Jimmy was Jimmy Burke, Tommy was Thomaso DeSimone. The guy they killed was William Billy Bats Bentvena, a made man in the Gambino Family, vrey close to Neil Delacroce, Fat Andy Rugiano and John Gotti. Very bad decision to just kill a made guy. Even Paul Vario was in trouble with Neil Delacroce and it was Lucchese boss Anthony Tony Ducks Corallo that bailed them out after convincing Neil Delacroce to give them a pass.

A "made guy" is an official member of a crime family. As apposed to an "associate" who works for a family. The difference is the level of protection. A made guy can pretty much do anything without the risk of death. He does something out of line he would get taxed. An associate has some protection but in the end they're disposable.

The real Tommy was even more of a maniac compared to the movie. According to Henry Hill, whenever he would buy a new gun, he'd go out and shoot a random person with it.

Answering her question: "Made Guy" means that Billy Batts, man that Tommy killed is a member of a Mob Family (I believed that Billy is with Gambino Family). Like Henry Hill stated, you need a good reason and an ok from higher members of the Mob for killing made man.

Once a person(s), husband, wife and their children go on witness protection, their lives are not exactly normal. Moving to a different city or town in a different state, and a change of identities and social security numbers. For the most part, witness protection would just might last for a few years. When Henry Hill's witness protection was over with, he continued with some crime activity on and off, and doing some time in jail or in prison for a short period. Henry Hill passed away in a Los Angeles, California in a hospital on June 12, 2012 of complications heart of disease one day after his Birthday. He was 69.

"Being made" or "a made guy" would refer to the inclusion in the inner mafia circle, basically. However, as far as I understand it, you're in the inner circle but definitely way below in the ranks first. You have to work your way to the positions: Captain or even boss.

This movie reflects the lower gangster life vs The Godfather - this is the "working class" gangster who have no real contact with the top guy. Pauly is a Capo or captain, not a Don. The Sicilian mafia can "make" a man only if he is pure Italian - that is why his friends were happy (until they killed him) which was mainly because he killed the other made guy without permission, and also because Tommy was a wild stupid killer out of control which is dangerous to them, draws attention. They don't want attention. If you are a "made guy" you are entitled to respect that the regular associates do not get. You can never insult or harm a made guy without being killed, no matter what. In that "life" the goal is to be "made". It's a very important thing, also they refer to it as "getting your stripes" or your "button" like someone high ranking in military. In the end most of them wind up with a terrible life in prison or murdered. Not worth it. Director Martin Scorsese grew up in a neighborhood that was in "little Italy" NY and very aware of these things, hence he made many gangster movies, and people like them because of the drama and money involved. You can see how they go up...then come down. Criminals are not the best friends to have. La Cosa Nostra or Mafia is like a government within a government, setting their own rules.

Just about this whole movie took place a few miles from me on Long Island. I mean I recognize most of the places they were at and have been to them at one time or another. Idlewild Airport is Kennedy Airport today. There is a pretty big swamp next to the airport, thats sort of surrounded by a low income area that many a car and a few other things have disappeared into it. Never to be seen again.

Original title of the movie was suppose to be Wiseguy, which is the title of the book by Nicholas Pileggi. Also Billy Batts in real life (the guy in the trunk) was not only a made man but he was also a close friend to John Gotti.

A "made guy" is a member of a mafia family, Billy Batts (the guy in the trunk) was a member of the "Gambino" crime family. while Tommy, Jimmy and Henry were "associates" of the "Lucchese" crime family, so they worked with the mafia, but they weren't members of the mafia. now, in the mafia world a "made man" is untouchable! unless you get approval... and in order to do that, you first had to have a good reason for wanting him dead, and then get the approval of the higher-ups. otherwise, you'll be the one getting killed.
