- June 29 - July 3, 2010 trip onboard Via Rail Train No. 1 Canadian from Toronto to Vancouver BC. Revenue consist included 19 matched Budd stainless steel cars: baggage-dorm, 3-coaches, 3-Skyline dome cafe/lounges, 2-diners, 7-Manor series sleepers, 2-Chateau series sleepers, and Park series sleeper-dome-observation. Train carried 2 deadhead Chateau sleepers Toronto-Winnipeg and 1 west of Winnipeg. Low-profile dome added at Edmonton for viewing of Rockies. Two F40PH-2's all the way. First scene is LRC corridor train heading out of Toronto behind P42 on June 29, 2010.
Absolutely the best train on the rails anywhere. I love it
The Rocky Mountaineer puts it to shame !!!!!!!
My wife and I took this train two years ago. It had a Park car and other fineries. Loved it, but wish the sleeper room was bigger! Thanks for your video. Vancouver BC was wonderful, by the way, and also worth the trip.
Outstanding video! You have captured the essence of your trip beautifully. Thank you for taking us along for the ride!
if the train was busy you did very well in filming the inside of the train with a minimum of people present. Did this train just once around May 15th 2005 the train was very busy. Can't wait to do the trip again. a very nice video thanks for posting
My pleasure - thanks so much! It was indeed a spectacular trip and one I'll never forget.
Surprised at how empty the train appears to be considering the time of year. Took the same trip VIA 'The Canadian' [Toronto to Vancouver] between Dec 30th 2003 & Jan 2nd, 2004 [single berth sleeper] - train was packed the whole trip.
Awesome trip - love to do it again [though this time during the summer]
The age of passengers has nothing to do with the train schedule. In fact, the trip could be completed faster but there are two main considerations; the need to serve significant stops during reasonable hours and to pass thru prime scenery in daylight. To accomplish both, the train has scheduled stops of several hours in Winnipeg and Edmonton where passengers can disembark and visit local sites of interest. Otherwise, the train operates at up to track speed and doesn't just poke along.
I believe you're asking about the Panorama Car. It was added to the train at Edmonton for the run through the Rockies. It is not a true dome because it lacks "see-ahead" capability as the passengers are not viewing from above the roof line of the car. Nevertheless, this was a very attractive car and a great way to take in the amazing scenery. The lack of a "see ahead" view is offset by the uninterrupted square footage of glass making up the canopy which covers the car. Great to ride in.
Fortunately, I've never had a problem with this issue; but I do take precautions. First off, I try to travel with as few valuables as I can. I have been traveling recently with small digital video and still cameras that can fit in my pockets. When I leave the room, cameras, cell phone, and wallet all go with me. I leave nothing of any value out in the open while I'm gone and close my suitcase. I close the curtains and shut the door so its not easy to see if the room is occupied.
It's a fair comment not wanting to intrude on people's privacy while recording video - I know I'd be self-concious of it myself if I were behind the camera.
Still such a trip, at any time of the season, is memorable experience.
Appreciated the video.
Cheers!
They sure do. That 20-car consist of matching Budd cars sprinkled with 4 dome cars including the dome-observation is hard to beat. I couldn't help but think this is the type of thrill the original California Zephyr must have generated.
Wow that low dome car is even better then the superliner lounge
We took this train in the summer of 2016. Remember that the schedule is just a suggestion. Left Toronto 4 hours late and arrived in Jasper 6 hours late. The train from Jasper to Vancouver was 11 hours late. However, the food was more than excellent.
It's because they lend priority to freight trains, unfortunately.
The train leaves Toronto at 10 pm (Day 1) and arrives Edmonton at 6:22 am on Day 3. The train frequency is reduced and the schedule changes to a 6:37 am Edmonton arrival beginning November 1st. You can see all the train operating information on the VIA Rail Canada website. Thanks for watching and letting me know you enjoyed it.
The Last Streamliner
tlong0038 The Last Streamliner
A transcontinental train journey back in time and across Canada on-board VIA Rail's legendary Canadian.
I booked my trip directly through VIA using their website.
the dome are what I miss here on Amtrak: the Superliner equipment does not allow you to see in front or behind: only off the sides of the train.
Going solo is a great way to go. I find it is inevitable that you will connect with some of your fellow passengers. Take advantage of the longer layovers at Winnipeg and Edmonton to stretch your legs and take in some local sights, Since I like to get off and take photos at as many stops as I can, I was surprised that at one stop (I think Saskatoon) there were quite a few mosquitos. Canada has lots of water and it was summer at sunset. So if you're sensitive just know that they can be around when you step off. If you're traveling in a sleeper take advantage of all the amenities and various places to lounge and of coarse the domes. You can have a great trip in coach too, I took coach on the CP route Montreal to Vancouver over thirty years ago. You'll enjoy this trip. Travel well.
How much did it end up costing in the end (including return fare)? I assume that all the food and drink on board is extra?
It cost $1360 Canadian for the one-way trip form Toronto to Vancouver (I flew to Toronto). That was in a cabin for one (summer season) and meals are included for sleeping car passengers. Alcoholic beverages in lounge and dining cars are extra.
***** Thank you. Then I'd have to consider 2k for hotel in Vancouver and flight back...more if I enjoy the province.
It was Prince Albert Park.
The perception of an empty train is mostly my fault and due to my habits of video recording. I am self conscious about recording in areas where there are lots of people - I like to feature interior shots of the equipment when I feel I'm not intruding on people's privacy; probably a little silly on my part. There was a good sized crowd on board and the consist of the train was big so I'm sure people were spread out and it wasn't as dense as the winter train you rode when the trains are shorter.
I'm riding cross-country by myself in June as a sort of "freedom trip". Do you have any tips or suggestions that I should know before taking the trek?
Thanks for useful video info. I have booked my sleeper from Toronto to Vancouver in Aug 2019. Really looking forward it to it. Does train provide free drinking water or I need to buy bottle water> Pls help
There is potable water available in private sleeping car rooms. I don't recall if bottled water is provided. I hope you have an amazing trip!
i have a question, if from Ontario and i want to travel by train to Edmonton, how long does it take to reach there? btw great vid *thumbs up*
I suppose no reservations required to ride the PANORAMA or PARK DOME cars.
Those 1950s streamlined cars take you back dont they? wow.
If the doors to the cabins don't lock when you are not in them, what did you with your valuables?
I'm taking that train this summer
I'm sure you'll have a great trip. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I rode this in June 2016 as part of a package tour. Where was that stop by the silo at 4:44 - 5:19? It's the only one I don't recognize.
That stop is Melville, Saskatchewan. According to the VIA route guide the community there was named for Charles Melville Hays, President of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railroad Company who was lost on the Titanic in 1912. After recording that scene and getting back on the train the sky really opened up. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Does anyone remember the name of this train in 1975? Was it CP Rail? It's very important. Thank you ever so much. When we took the train in 1975, from Toronto to Vancouver, it was not a luxury train, although it did have a dome car. Most of the cars were yellow.
The train on the currently operated (Canadian National) route would have been the "Super Continental" in 1975 not the "Canadian" which ran on CP Rail at that time. In 1975, VIA Rail was the passenger subsidiary of CN and could explain the yellow (yellow was mostly used as trim on blue cars). That train typically did provide a full-length dome and while great for tourists, and sightseers, was also a common conveyance for travelers. The Canadian in 1975 would have had fluted-side stainless steel cars with red trim - no yellow at all.To make things more confusing, in 1990 VIA Rail (that now also operated ex-CP service) moved the "Canadian" from it's original CP route to the CN route and the "Super Continental" was discontinued. That explains the original "Canadian" name and equipment on the current CN route.
krutherfurd - Thank you so very, very much!!! I appreciate this more than you can possibly know fantastic man!! 😊
I was actually hoping to find a photo of the complete consist of the 1975 Super Continental. I have a photo I took while swinging off the side - yeah it was the 70s. I can't attach the photo here, but I put it on my Google+ profile. What is the red and yellow car that I'm standing in front of taking a pic of in 1975? Is there a photo anywhere of the diesel motive? Thanks again so much krutherfurd. I'm writing a book, and really appreciate this. I would like to quote you if you can email me your name at c.wolterhall@gmail.com😃

I took a look at the photo taken from the side of the train and recognized the diesel locomotives right away. They are the type I expected to see and I can send you an email with pictures of typical CN passenger diesel locomotives operating during that period. They are General Motors F-units, most likely F7 or FP7 models or maybe FP9. I see three of them in the photo and at least the middle one appears to be a cab-less "B" unit, ("A" units had a cab). From what I can tell the photo was taken from the vestibule of a black and white smooth side car so that car was open to passengers, most likely a coach or sleeper? Do you remember? The (yellow/red?) car in front of that is hard to see the details. Because of its location just behind the locomotives I would suspect it could be a baggage or dormitory car or some combination of both. It is also possible that it is in the consist deadhead and is being ferried by the train and belongs to a different railroad. It could also have been leased from another railroad for use. The dome cars used on this train beginning in 1964 were actually built for the Milwaukee Road in 1952 and had long documented careers and some still exist with private owners. I can also send you information and pictures on those cars.
Did you book this through VIA or through another tour company?
what Park car brought up the rear on your trip ??
nice video I used to know some friends in Ontario who took the train all the way to Vancouver and they messed up their tickets somehow and the four of them have to sleep stuffed up and two roomettes, lol
To bad the train cant go faster or i would have went but i guess its ok i think its mostly old people who take the train
Oh that might be what the sceneramic dome car looked like on the Super Continental. I have no memory, nor anything written in diary of the restaurants. You know my name is Caroline. What does "k" stand for? Are you Canadian or American?
The k is the first letter of my name which is Keith - I am American, native Californian.
Yeah I know. I figured that out ~ lol (see below post 4 hours ago). Thank you kind man. Pretty jealous you're in California. Winter just started. Yuck! Phooey!
Where are the dome cars as the train pulls out of Toronto?
All four domes were on the train. It was 10 pm so too dark to get good shots; that's why the video action in the dome begins the next morning. Rest assured I spent a lot of time enjoying the domes the first night out under the stars. To get technical the domes were located (from the front of train) behind the last coach, after the 1st group of sleepers/before the 1st diner, after the 2nd group of sleepers/before the 2nd diner, and the Park obs. dome was at the rear.
is there a train from quebec to ontario?
Yes there is and probably several including "Quebec Corridor" trains. Via Rail Canada has a website that provides schedule and route details.
