    Skating showed me at a young age exactly what steve-o mentioned. It weed's out the pussies and quitters, you have to persist to even start to be good.
    You fail a lot more than you succeed, and even when you’re good there is always more to learn. Every skater knows behind the perfect kickflip has been hundreds of hours of practice and pain. The board and the terrain are constant and the only thing stopping your from progressing is yourself. You learn how to understand your own fear. This message has stayed with me into adulthood and has paid off in multiple aspects, and something i do my best to emulate to my kid. Thanks for the vid dude.

    I started skating last year at 26 years old. I had watched a skateboard video on youtube i think it was one of dan corrigans videos, so shoutout to him. It looked like a blast and good exercise so i bought a board and gave it a go. Literally no one in in my small town in sweden skated, i saw a longboarder once but thats it. Even learning how to push was quite nervewracking in the beginning and i soon realized that this fear doesn't really go away. It is something you need to deal with every single time you wanna try something new, but every time you conquer it, it feels so damn good. I learned to throw down and cruise quite well and a lot of kids stared at me when i went by because skateboarding here is like a but forgotten artform. These kids have almost certainly never seen anyone skating irl.
    One day 2 kids stop me and asks me if they can try riding my board. I let them try and i showed them how to push. They said they've might try it out and I told them to go home and watch some skating vids and you can see how fucking insane some of these guys are and that you might become one of them if you start. A week later I'm out tictacing and practicing manuals and i see those same kids on a skateboard just practicing pushing. It felt kinda good being able to, not really inspire because I'm still dogshit but show them the ropes and giving them some motivation perhaps to start. I'm just happy to see more people getting into skateboarding because not only is it fun as fuck but you learn so much about yourself that you didn't know. It really teaches you how to manage your emotions and that was really important to me. Second year milestone : Getting a good ollie moving and doing them up and down curbs. Keep grinding guys.

    • @SkateRaptor
      @SkateRaptor  Год назад

      That was beautiful! Good on you for inspiring those kids! Skateboarding is super fun at it's most core level. I got into it in 2008 and even the small things like cruising around, pushing and the little power slides you learn when you first start are still so much fun to do for me today. It's hard to describe the feeling skating gives you to people who never skated before but everyone who has knows that feeling of cruising with the wind blowing on your face. These guys take it to another level but It's amazing even at it's most basic level. 😛

    • @c0mplete

      @@SkateRaptor Thank you! Great videos btw! Watched your newest one, it popped up in my feed and it was really interesting so i had to sub check more of em out.
      Oh yeah the feeling when you cruise with chill music in your ears feeling the wind in your face, for me it's the most peaceful and freeing thing. It's just amazing. Yeah these guys are so nuts and i really wish i had started sooner. I was doing other sports i grew up playing all the friends played etc and just kind of got stuck there. But I'm just really happy i decided to actually start even if its late. My goal is to be able to cruise anywhere without problems, olleing up and down curbs and getting a good manual and nose manual before i start going into kickflips and other tricks. I think its a fair goal starting out just being out there hopefully getting other people interested in starting out.

    • @SkateRaptor
      @SkateRaptor  Год назад

      @@c0mplete I appreciate it brother! Thanks for the support! That's a good goal, being able to cruise around freely without getting out of your board is a blast. Things like kickflips, basic grinds and slides are great too and 100% achievable if you work at it. Mike Boyd learned kickflips in 1 day and he doesn't even skate. Link below.
      ruclips.net/video/0fzst0kM8pI/видео.html
      But it's the cherry on top. The basics are 90% of the fun, it doesn't really matter how good you are.

Also on the creative side I have needed that same challenge like art, guitar and Minecraft as doing art projects of 20-30 hours is humbling. What makes skating special is it's physical and artistic so challenges both the body and mind in many ways.

Skating needs to be understood and accepted by society, just like biking or power jogging. It's simply another activity, some people use handrails because they have to. Others use it to grind. It's all for public use. You don't have to love it, you just have to tolerate it, just like I tolerate bikers.

    If we want more and better maintained public skateparks, then we do need society to understand us. I get the thrill and creativity of street skating around a city. That's what I had to do as a teen because we didn't have a skatepark and halfpipes were nowhere near as fun because I couldn't maintain speed on them. If you have a local skatepark then skate there instead of grinding ledges or scaring pedestrians because, unfortunately, it can be a citable crime and it can get older folks to be against us, and they vote.

      @SkateRaptor  Год назад +2

      That's absolutely fair. When skaters talk about skateboarding being viewed as a crime, they are usually talking about being viewed as criminals just for being on top of a skateboard. That's a different thing. I have had situations where someone (usually an elderly person) tries to kick me as I cruise past them on the side walk. Being on someone's property is one thing, being treated like a criminal for riding a skateboard is something else. When I started in 2008, my grandma told me she thought all skaters were drug addicts (this is the type of mindset that should change). And when people come and kick you out of spots, you can tell that they don't think of you as a regular human being. Most people just yell at you. And I'm not saying all skaters are this way, but most of the time it's skaters that take the first step into being amicable and saying "Listen, we will leave. But please just talk to us politely. We are not trying to disrespect you, we are just doing something we love doing. We are human beings just like you."

      At the same time, we should respect others property and space. You know that if you mess up that board could shoot out from under you and do some damage. So even if you aren’t trying to damage something, accidents happen. You should be accountable for your actions and mistakes. So don’t be surprised if people with small children or old people don’t like you skating near them. Also all the videos of skaters smoking weed, drinking and vandalizing public property don’t help the situation. And there’s a lot of those videos that make skaters look bad.

      @@rcyo-yo447 I agree. There's definitely bad apples in both sides. And older skaters should be setting a good example for the younger generation. I have seen IG clips of skaters skate other people's car, etc. There's no excuse for that type of behavior. But it's much more pleasant to be kicked out by someone who has encountered good skaters before or who just has a better understanding of it (usually younger people). When people come with respect, the skaters are 1000x more likely to comply and everyone wins.
