Such a beautiful song, so poignant and for so many Irish men and women it describes perfectly what they endured.

My granny's favourite song and also her party piece. By strange coincidence I find myself living only a couple of miles from "The Old Bog Road" and every time I pass it on my way to Dublin, it brings back great memories of bygone years

I love Johnny--The Man from Banagher. His voice and songs never fail to impress me!
He is so honest about his own suffering--he gives hope to those who feel down and depressed. A real man! Thanks Johnny.

As a child, my mom sang this as she went about her daily chores. She seemed to love songs with stories. Am playing this today for all my deceased siblings who passed in recent years, the most recent was Bridget's memorial yesterday. Beautiful voice.

In memory of Terry McGloin from Cowie. When I was a kid, terru, Johnnie, Edward Terry's brother Paddy and other family would gather in my auntie Kathleen's. Their would be guitars and accordions and singing, and tea and drink. As the ceilidh wound its way into the wee small hours, Terry would become homesick for his home in Donegal and venture in song down "The Old Bog Road." He'd get the first few bars out, and Paddy, his brother would crack the same joke we'd heard a dozen times, but we would still smile.." C'mon now Terry, don't be making us homesick, just sing the first 20 verses!" Great days, great folk great memories. god be good to them all.

@frankthe grove.....you are 100% correct by saying that Teresa Brayton wrote that magniicent song......she was born in Country Kildare in 1868 and came to the United States in 1895 and then went back to her homeland in 1932. She was a wonderful poet and writer and she died in Ireland in 1943. In 1959, the President of Ireland, Eamon De Valera, put a Celtic Cross over her grave.
Keep up the GOOD work Tyrone man ,.... and we'll do the best we can. Thanks.

Some previous comments claim this is a Wexford song. Highly unlikely. The writer of the lyrics came from Kilbrook, Co. Kildare. There is a nearby townland called "Ferrans" alternative spelling "Ferns", just across the border in Co. Meath. This is most likely the place referred to; not the Ferns of Wexford.

A few years ago my mum died from dementia but even in her dotage, even though she didn't who I was, she still knew the words to this song. I saw Johnny in a petrol station in Enniskerry late at night, but didn't want to him feel awkward by telling him this story. She loved this song along with Paddy Reillys The spanish lady

I grew up on a farm in Ireland in the 70s. My dad had a Johnny McAvoy record and I was amazed at his unbelievable ballad songs. Now own a company in the Bay Area and listed to everything from punk to rap to bluegrass. Johnny McAvoy and the old bog road is for real.
