Cocktails with a Curator: Titian's "Aretino"

- In this week’s episode of “Cocktails with a Curator,” celebrate the 444th anniversary of Titian’s death by delving into the tumultuous life of Pietro Aretino, one of the most celebrated-and reviled-literary figures of the Italian Renaissance. Deputy Director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator Xavier F. Salomon examines Titian’s portrait of Aretino at the Frick and the friendship between the Venetian painter and the acid-tongued writer, known to his contemporaries as the “scourge of princes.” This week’s complementary cocktail is the Bellini, a mixture of Prosecco and white-peach puree created by the Cipriani family in Venice and named for Titian’s teacher, Giovanni Bellini.

I didnt know this artist Aretino but having visited Venice saw so many beatiful churches and palaces painted by different artist like Tintoretto anf Tician have painted also in Hungarys greatest Catedral Maria Assumpstion in bishopresident Esztergom .I remain very found of early italian art.Thanks for your explanation.I had opportunity also read about art in Italian art in Institute in Budapest.You are wellcome also in our Museums .

I'm sure many will disagree with me, but I would much prefer more discussion on the artistic significance, style, techniques, etc, than the historical significance of the subject. This is especially true for me with regard to Titian for whom I cannot pin down a recognizable style given the varied and large number of works. Thanks for listening...

Fabulous. Im off too see the reunited Titian "Poesies" at the National in London on Friday (its going on tour I believe to all the present holders including the Prado and the Isabella Stewart Gardner). Imagine the conversations within this group about Ovid. Theres also quite an interesting new Biography of Aretino.

Rome always had henchmen that attached themselves to the various families and factions. It's probable the sitter was one such from the Tuscan faction. He may have risen to real power in later life and much like a bank chair today his portrait kept as a matter of respect.
What happened to the other curator I loved her clear voice and sunny disposition Please can we see her again ?

If all copies of The Ways were destroyed by the Inquisition including the plates used to produce them, how'd we get the image at 9:44? Btw, is there an English translation? Asking for a friend. Orson Welles would've made a great Aretino had he made a movie about him. Aretino definitely has a Falstaff-ian thing about him.

444 is a very bad luck number in Chinese since the number 4 is a homonym with the Chinese word for "death".

يحكى أن رجل ابتاع حصان فأراد أن ينام داخل بيته ويربط الحصان خارجه فبحث عن حبل يربط به الحصان فلم يجد فذهب لجاره وكان سائس خيل فقال له أريد أن تعيرني حبالاً لأربط به حصاني الذي اشتريته آنفاً فقال له السائس ولما أعيرك حبالاً بل ولما تربط الحصان بحبال فقال له الرجل وبماذا أربطه قال لاتحتاج لربطه بحبال قال فماذا أصنع قال أوهم الحصان أنك تربطه بحبال وبالفعل عاد الرجل لحصانه وأوهمه أنه يربطه ثم دخل بيته ونام وبعد أن استيقظ في الصباح وجد الحصان في مكانه ففرح الرجل أن تعلم كيف يربط الحصان بلاحبل فركب على ظهر الحصان ليذهب به إلى عمله ولكن الحصان رفض المشي أو التحرك من مكانه فنزل الرجل وذهب لسائس الخيل وقال له أدركني فالحصان لايمشي ولايتحرك ولايريد أن يتحرك من مكانه قال له السائس هل فككت وثاقه قال أنا لم أربطه بحبل قال له السائس اذهب وأوهمه أنك تحل وثاقه وبالفعل عاد الرجل وأوهم الحصان أنه يفك عنه وثاقه ثم امتطاه ومضى به الحصان فالدولة هي هذا الشعب فالوزير منهم والعالم منهم والتاجر منهم والإعلامي منهم والطبيب والمهندس والجندي منهم والمزارع والراعي منهم وماهذا الطاغوت إلا فرد يغرس في نفوسهم الوهم فيقود ويستعبد بعضهم بعضاً له وهو باقٍ ماكانوا متفرقين وما سياسات التخويف بالإعلام الحربي والناعم من خلال الأفلام والمسلسلات والمقالات ودعوى كورونا هذه إلا لغرس الخوف الذي يولد الوهم الذي تقوم عليه دولة الطاغوت فيفرقهم به حتى لايكونوا عصبة فيكتشفون ضعفه وجبنه وخوره لاسيما في الوقت الذي نفذت فيه الأموال التي يربط بها القلوب بالشهوات والفرق بين دولة الشيطان والكفر وحزبه ودولة الإيمان وحزبه أن الأولى تربط أعناق قلوب الناس بزبالات أذهان الطواغيت البشرية (القوانين الجاهلية) وتخلد بها إلى الأرض وتضع أقدامهم فوق رؤوسهم فلايرفعوها ودولة الإيمان تربط أعناق قلوب الناس بالتوحيد والبراءة من الشرك أهله ولاتفرق بين شريف وضعيف وتصعدبها إلى العلي العظيم فلاتقبل رؤوسهم أن تهبط للأرض إلاشهيدة أوميتة في سبيل الله فتصعد الروح من الجسد للعلي العظيم كما صعد الجسد والروح للعلي العظيم في حياته فحياة المؤمن وموته شموخ وصعود وتدرج وحياة الكافر والمنافق والمرتد والفاسق ذلة وهوان وهبوط وتدرك.
This is not a reproach, rather a suggestion. It would be nice to hear also about the artistic qualities of the paintings you select, not just the stories behind them. The piece on Bellini's majestic Meditazione di San Francesco went in that direction, this one, though equally riveting, stopped at philology. Maybe that's not the point of the series, and if this is the case I get it.Who doesn't love the work of Aby Warburg? But here is the thing, we are sadly losing the ability to tell beautiful apart from dull. As art history is not taught in schools (not in the US) and museums are few and far apart (also in most of the US), how is a young mind going to form its taste? Memory and philology are satisfying because they deal with facts, but how are young folks (and even old ones like me) going to form value judgements? Just an idea.

Lin Barton. Would you prefer something along the lines of “Tea with the Talker”, Or, are you advocating, a beverageless LECTURE. The Cocktail looks at the total, a very civilized way to do so.
@@bjjaah bingo! Yes! Beverage-less if that's a word, how are cocktails civilized? They're not. It's kind of like "just a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down". And Peter never looks like he's enjoying it at all. Looks a little nauseated after the sips. Also, no comma after advocating.
