- In this episode of "Travels with a Curator," we visit the world-famous Westminster Abbey in London, with Xavier F. Salomon, Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator. Xavier shares connections between Westminster Abbey and the Frick through an examination of the life of General John Burgoyne, a playwright, parliamentarian, and military officer buried in the Abbey’s north cloister. Sir Joshua Reynolds’s portrait of Burgoyne was acquired by The Frick Collection in 1943.

I was watching this particular show in Saratoga Springs with my mother today. How appropriate!
I grew up within a few miles of the Saratoga battlefield, and have revisited it many times, so this presentation had a special significance for me, too - - and the more so, as as I've also seen the portrait at the Frick several times, the "Surrender at Saratoge" painting, and visited Burgoyne's grave-site at the Abby. Greetings from a fellow-Saratogian !

Having spent my youth within a few miles of the Saratoga battlefield, and having visited Burgoyne's tomb in the Abby and seen his portrait at the Frick, I especially enjoyed this well balanced and sympathetic presentation, which brought these and other elements together in a most engaging presentation! I was supposed to go to London this summer and this video makes me feel a bit like I'm there. It's been 25 years since I visited inside the Abbey during a school trip and I so want to do that again next time and looking at it with new eyes. Of course I'd love to go and visit NY some time in the future with the Frick collection at the top of my to do list but that will take some more money and time to do (I live in Italy) , but I will do that too. In the meantime thanks for the video, yours are among the best I find on RUclips 😍

Dear mr.Currator Salamon thanks to you again because as I visited londons beautiful Westminster Abbey I was 18 years old and I can hardly remmember seeing all of this i know the Queen was crwoned here and royal weddings took part here.As i know Lord Byron is also burried here I have collection of poems l have read a few of them. Buckingam Palace Parlament.London Tower Madamme Toussos Muzeun Trafalgare squer with museums Cleopatras needle Qeeen Elisabeth concert hall Watterloo bridge Hyde Park and Oxford street and the metro is not forgettable for mee.My sisters Marias in Sister in law levas near to Oxford with family.I visited a few years ago.So England is also a "mixture" Of cultures and gives everybody to enjoy it.

Very familiar with the Battle of Saratoga, as I grew up right near there. Never knew about Burgoyne’s earlier life. Now I see the bigger picture.
Greetings from a fellow-Saratogian. I, too,grew up only a few miles from the Saratoga battlefield (Burnt Hills), which I have visited many times, and as a professional historian, studied as part of our Revolutionary history. Curator Soloman`s presentation helps balance the reputation of "Gentleman Johnny".

This is so timely for me. I just finished Sharon Kay Penman's marvelous "The Sunne in Splendour" about Richard III, with Elizabeth in sanctuary at the Abbey. And today I read about Burgoyne's defeat at Saratoga. As Penman's book gave me insight...and respect...for Richard, this lecture gave me the same for Burgoyne.
What impressed me at the Abbey was the ashes of Laurence Olivier buried just a few feet away from the tomb of Henry V, whom he portrayed in the great film which he also directed.

I love this series. I've been to New York a few times and each time I visit the Frick , the Met and MoMA - in that order ! I live in London and I think the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior is very moving. Like a lot of England it maybe isn't visually arresting but the poetry, history and rituals, and yes, understatement of the place give it a profound atmosphere. Did you know that royal brides, rather than throw their bouquets at the feast for their bridesmaids and friends to catch , send the flowers to be laid on the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior? I think it is a tradition that started quite spontaneously with Queen Elizabeth, the mother of the oresent Queen. I'm an ardent republican (small R !!), but I think it's very beautiful and poignant.
I am sure that the Frick Museum will be mobbed by all the people who have seen these programmes as soon as we are allowed to travel.
I live in Scotland and have never contemplated visiting the US until now.
Oh, to see these wonders in real life!
Your presentations are very interesting and I don’t miss one, but I stay quite troubled about the way you mentioned the battle of Valência de Alcântara. I’m Portuguese and we had several battles to maintain our independence from Castela, instead of the remaining Iberian States that originated Spain. Being independent is our history, and that’s why we are one of the oldest nations in the World with the same frontiers. Our relation with Spain is plenty of ambiguity, but I must assure you that we have never recognized great importance to that battle, neither general John Burgoyne as the savior of our Nation.
So interesting to see earlier conflicts between political expediency and apolitical practical decisions.

Wonderful presentation, as always, with one minor correction: Not all kings have been crowned at Westminster Abbey - Edward V and Edward VIII were never crowned.
Another correction - balance of proof indicates Shakespeare is not buried at Stratford but at Westminster Abbey contrary to what the Shakespeare "industry" based at Stratford would have us believe. Updating through the "Oxfordians" led by Alexander Waugh is recommended, all available through their RUclips videos.
Such a contrast with Major Andre's elaborate tomb inside the Abbey. Both failed in their missions, but Andre was caught and hanged as a spy. Perhaps Burgoyne would have a more conspicuous grave if he had been killed in battle.

Couple of things. Westminster Abbey is a Royal Peculiar that is, it comes under the authority of the Monarch not the Church of England, the state religion. Also, Kings and Queens are crowned monarchs of Great Britain and Northern Ireland NOT England. Please!
