  • In preparation for John Wick Chapter 4, I made this video essay analysing the principles of John Wick's fight scenes, action and story as well as looking at the key influences that director Chad Stahelski draws upon from the silent films of Buster Keaton & Charlie Chaplin to the action of Jackie Chan and John Woo.
I hope you enjoy the video!

Got my ticket for IMAX opening night on Thursday. I don't think I've ever been this excited for a film before.

some of the reasons why I love action scenes is because they tell so much without even saying a word. Awesome video :D

Yo what was with that shot you took at Bullet Train. I really enjoyed that movie lol. Great Video Essay though. I enjoyed hearing your thoughts. I hadn't seen anything covering silent movies like you did, and it gave me a little more appreciation for a genre of films that I have entirely neglected.

haha thank you so much! i’m sorry, I really wasn’t a fan of bullet train but i’m glad to hear what you said about silent films, i feel like a lot of people haven’t really explored that part of cinema even though a lot of what we see today is derived directly from them.

@@Essential_Cinema I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy the movie! I thought it captured a kind of… jovial feel similar to Deadpool. But you’re right about the silent films. They are the “godfather” if you will of modern film. Story telling through actions and not exposition. Either way I love your videos man! Thank you for making them

Craziest part is that Keanu said that had to tell the director that some dialogue might be needed in certain scenes on Chapter 4 because he hadn't said a line weeks.

I do really like the first John Wick but I feel you are giving way to high of praise for the sequels and they definitely don't deserve it imo. I think the video essay was great though. Very well put together and formulated. We just don't share the same opinion which is fine.

I have a love/hate relationship with channels like this, because they come to wildly opposing conclusions using the ecxact same arguments. I just came from a channel that says the action in JW tells us nothing about the story, it's all filler to get us to the next pause were characters talk to further the plot.
I side with the other channel; JW does not tell a story through action. At best it uses the action to get JW to the next set peace where the actions pauses for a bit as the characters give you the next bit of the story (such as it is). The other channel contrasted JW with Fury Road. In that movie the action actually changes things, informs the viewer of character traits, relationships between characters etc. Nox uses Max as a bloodbank and has little regard for Max's safety, until Max fights Furiosa and Nox immediately sides with Max, even though Furiosa is part of Nox's world. Nox goes so far as to hand Max a clip of ammunition. He knows Max can now shoot everybody including Nox, but he doesn't try to grab the gun, he gives control to Max because he is obviously the better fighter. A few seconds later action again teaches us that they are all going to have to trust eachother or die at the hands of Joe. No words are used to express this, just visuals, just action.
In JW the story is this... well there is none. JW killed a guy for killing his dog and now the killers who killed want to kill the killer who killed the killer of the dog.... or something. Who cares, just give me action! (that's the producers talking to screenwriterguy) Throughout 2 and 3 the only thing that ever happens is that JW talks to a person until bad guys show up who JW shoots in the head, then things calm down and JW talks about who those guys were and he is told where the next group of bad guys are and he goes there and shoots them all in the head and then talks for a bit about where the next group of badguys are.
I feel an urge to rant about how JW is impervious to bullets and how every badguy insists on getting as close as possible and presenting themselves as an easy target, often literally waiting their turn to get shot, but JW is not about realism so I'll let that slide for now.
In JW the action does not tell us anything, ever. And that's actually fine for a JW movie because JW is not about a story, it's about showing off Reeve's gun skills (such as they are). It's a power fantasy film where we can pretend ot be the invincible JW and pop those caps in those heads. Personally I got nausioous seeing people get shot in the head over and over, it physically sickened me, but that's me, I'm a wimp.

In my opinion, the world of john wick is cool, the action is fantastic (obiously) and the character of john wick is great. BUT there are too many plot holes and the characters around john are just stupid and don't contribute to understanding his character or the story at all.
In my opinion (and maybe im wrong because I haven't seen the last three movies in a while), after seeing the 4th one in the series: John wick is great but it coudve been more than just a great action film. Whats your opinion?

  • @timhillx57995

This is just my opinion, but I find the action and the stunts in the matrix movies and John Wick to be very boring and slow and I hate when I look into the background and see guys glitching out waiting for their queue to punch there is such a thing as too choreographed to list some of the action scenes that I appreciate
Hallway scene from old boy and the king of spades fight scene from Alice in borderland in my opinion, they capture the brutality of a real fight, the aggression and adrenaline, but combining it into a beautiful dance. I don’t know what it is but when I see John Wick get punched, it doesn’t really feel like it hurts him he just keeps on going
