Oh my goodness you have no idea how happy it makes me to hear that! I think one of the things this project really showed me is that drawing/painting a big variety of things out of your comfort zone is super helpful. Once I started pinpointing weaknesses that I wanted to work on (especially from the first painting without reference), it gave me a lot of things to study and try to improve on like the reflections with the windows and water. Still a long way to go as well! I hope you do give it a try if you want to, learning can honestly be super fun~

Ahhh well thank you so much! I do think sometimes it's really hard to warrant spending time on art like this nowadays, which is really unfortunate. Tbh that's a big part of why I made the video- I usually just don't have the time if it's not for work or a video. Want to change that though, spend some more time drawing/painting when I can~

Drawing and painting in general is definitely something I'm still working on improving haha, lots of work to do. Thank you so much! While I don't have too much time to dedicate to it, aside from the project sketches I probably do the most gesture drawing just because it's quick so I can sneak it in once in a while!

Totally agree, I think that has a lot to do with the fact that the original was really working off nothing, while the last one was working off the first one. Sort of like another iteration, so I'm not surprised it was more refined. Thank you so much for giving it a watch~

That was very inspiring. It's amazing the difference between the day one and day seven paintings.
I especially liked the vignette you did for the window reflection study. It had so much in it - value contrast, natural forms, constructed forms, - even an amazing sense of depth! All in one study. - whew!
Thank you so much for this. I think you've convinced me to try using colours again.

Doing the two versions of the same painting actually was actually a lot more interesting and informative than I expected! Thank you so much for all the kind words! So happy to hear that, wish you all the best with your future art endeavors~

    • @MechanicalFiend

I don't think that's necessarily wrong, sometimes a piece just doesn't work out and that's ok. That being said, sometimes when you work a piece that you don't like, after a while it will unexpectedly become something you like. There's no wrong way to do your art though, draw the way that serves you as an artist!

Woah, I was trying to follow your hints along the way for this one but wasn’t expecting this, wow! Seeing the side-by-side comparison at the end showed a lot of advancement in refining many of the finer details, and that water came out incredible. If this was the progress from one week, I could only imagine the milestones at one month or even one year. It was also enjoyable to see a project in a different medium than the usual so hopefully we’ll see more of them.

    • @MechanicalFiend

I think I'm actually kinda terrible at giving hints because I always think it's obvious when it's actually not at all lol. Totally, unfortunately I don't have the kind of time to dedicate to it like this regularly, but I'm definitely going to keep working on it when I can. Really glad to hear that you don't mind seeing a different medium once in a while, switching it up every so often is good for my brain haha~

This is the kind of video that fulfills the promise of RUclips as a platform for the sharing of filmed personal experiences and self-expression with unique presentations - in this case, a beautifully shot and edited chronicle of a week of an art experiment, which in my book is peak RUclips.
There's a quality in your videos that I find really compelling, with this amazing cinematography, the use of music, it's all a great package, and this one was a bliss to watch.
Your channel and Craftastrophe were both great discoveries of libraries of videos that have been something of comfort viewing for some sucky days and right now I'm glad there are still a good amount to go through in each!
I might skip the Mango tribute for now, since me and my fiancée are both still healing from something along those lines. I've began watching it and it was a little overwhelming for the moment, so I had to click away and I hope it didn't put a dent on your viewer retention stats, I felt a little guilty hahahah
I watched some of your videos with my fiancée and we've been getting some ideas for our small ongoing/future crafting projects in here, so thanks for that!
    Take care, all the best!

I honestly don't know how to even begin to say how much it means to hear that. There's still a long way for me to go in improving a lot of things about the videos, but I really try to make sure they at least capture the feeling that I'm trying to get across. It makes me the happiest to hear that both of you can enjoy them and you're able to take something into making your own projects! And of course, really glad if they can offer any kind of comfort- I am so sorry to hear that you are having some not so great days and hope the good days are more plentiful in the future. (And very happy to be included among T-Nu's channel haha, his stuff is fantastic)
Don't even worry about any stats lol, I certainly don't! I make videos for people to experience in the way that benefits them, not an algorithm. It's almost a year later and I still feel that pain quite keenly, so I totally understand and hope that both of your hearts can rest a little easier sometime soon.
Thank you so much for all the kind words, they are really so appreciated and it means the most to know that the videos can have an impact like this. All the best to you and your fiancée as well~

Wow you can really see the difference between the first and last painting. One is a bit more expressive and the other one a bit more detailed and cleaner, but both are beautiful in their own way. I really enjoyed watching you’re painting process, and the black and white sketches. The high liter gesture drawings were fascinating, the way you blocked in the shadows combined with the thin line art, I could stare at it for hours. This whole video is so inspiring, I injured my hand by drawing and painting too much, but watching this makes me feel as though my hand suddenly healed and I take on five projects at once. I’m so tempted to try that lesson plan you created even though landscape painting intimidates me. Great video as always, looking forward to the next one.

Doing the same painting twice actually surprised me in a lot of ways, I thought they would be more similar than they ended up being in the end. Thank you so much! I love doing gesture drawings with charcoal, I'm pretty slow drawing/painting usually so those sessions really help me loosen up and speed things up. I'm so sorry to hear about your hand! Super happy to hear this could maybe offer some inspiration, but please heal your hand first, that's much more important! You can also change the lesson plan based on what you want to do as well, doesn't have to be landscape painting and definitely can be altered to what you want to focus on~

Wow, this was really good! I hope you'll continue doing these, and maybe one day another painting/ art study type of video? I was especially interested in the water and window reflection segments because I'm definitely not experienced in those areas. Actually, I also don't feel confident in my own ability to draw landscapes and buildings and man made things either.
I think you're really good at these! Better than you give yourself credit for. I thought the first fishing village sketch and painting was impressive, and then to be able to compare them, wow. I really noticed how much the 2nd one stands out more, demands attention (in a good way!), and the really beautiful water was just *chef's kiss*
I thought the window reflection study was so so impressive. You did a gorgeous job with it.
Anyway, hope to see more like this in the future, if you ever want to do something like this again.

This was awesome! Waaaay better artist than me! Lol
When you started doing the cinematic drawings, it reminded me of something I did basically 10 years ago too with taking an in game reference of world of warcraft of an outdoor scenery area with a moonlight environment.
I tried to do it with oil pastels. It did not come out well... Lol
The whole process of everything you did was awesome to see. Did you spend about the same amount of time between the first, and last days?

    • @MechanicalFiend
      @MechanicalFiend  2 года назад

Ok but oil pastels are incredibly difficult to work with, especially with detail work haha. Still sounds like that would have been a really fun project though! Glad you could enjoy it, thank you so much! I didn't time the paintings, but I think it's likely that I did spend a bit longer on the last one, which probably had a lot to do with some of the improvements as well. I really should have mentioned that in the video lol, thanks for asking!

This was a really nice & relaxing video, I really enjoy watching time lapse painting and building videos so this was perfect. The transitions from styles and formats was nice and provided some great variate. I have to say my favorite was the window reflection, it looked beautiful. But honestly a really enjoyable video overall.
Now I just have one question (and I swear to god its not an inuendo) but for your brushes how to you clean the tips after painting? I notice for me (especially on brushes with smaller/thinner brussels) they tend to get messy/tangled after painting so I'd love to know how you care for them?

    • @MechanicalFiend
      @MechanicalFiend  Год назад

Thank you so much, the window was so fun to paint, I really hadn't ever done anything like that before- such a great challenge!
As far as the brushes, I actually really struggle with this too sometimes haha. Some of the ones I was using in this are pretty new so those ones are in pretty good condition. Recently I tried cleaning them with a solution of water, alcohol, and dish soap and brushing them through with an old toothbrush, which actually worked pretty well. For a lot of dried paint in a brush I saw a video about dipping them in boiling white vinegar (just be careful of dipping only the bristles and not any further or it could melt the glue holding the bristles in), but I haven't tried that. As far as keeping the shape of the brushes, I have done dipping them in hot water and then forming them back into shape by brushing them on a bar of soap- let it dry and they should be a bit better the next time you use them. There's a bunch of methods that you can try and I'm really not an expert, but hope that helps just a little!

You are ,in my opinion, quite hard on yourself , l do understand that is the operation by which we grow in reach and capacity. This was a very good exercis..., top marks. I enjoyed seeing your development over this week. May l give you a lesson my art teacher from highschool gave me , and it still works. I was part of a DnD group and l built a LOT of terrain. She said l should find a place with good light. Place a few pieces on a table about waist high . Spend the day watching how the shadows move across the pieces, how they shade each other and the landscape, ( the table). That helped , and l also placed the terrain on a mirror, both dry , and with a light coat of water and a slightly deeper amount of water. I ruined a few pieces but remember the lesson well. Just an aside , did your nail color tie into your daily work ? Or is my ocd outpacing my thoughts process ? Sorry for the long comment, great work....respect.

Honestly people tell me all the time haha, but being aware of my own weaknesses is the biggest thing that has helped me improve thus far. It's very possible to be able to like your work while also pointing out things you could do better. That's super interesting! It's funny because I feel like I know a decent amount about light and the properties of it from studying cinematography, but when it comes to painting it... it's a whole other story. Definitely something I want to work on! And yes! I was sitting there at 2am every night taking off the previous day's nail polish and repainting them in the dark lol. Gotta commit to the theme!
