- What led two pit bulls to turn on their owner in Virginia? The body of 22-year-old Bethany Lynn Stephens was discovered a mile from her home where she had taken the dogs for a walk in the woods last week. #InsideEdition
As a pitbull owner for many years I know it doesn't help this lady who died but for future reference. If you ever see a pitbull attack someone, grab the pit's back legs, lift them up into the wheelbarrow position and start to walk backwards. They will let go. Pitbulls cannot fight without their back legs for balance.
I saw a video that disprove that. Even with his legs in air this pitbull didn't let go of another dog.

I’ve saw a few dog and pitbull attack videos where that doesn’t work. Shoving water up their nose doesn’t work either. I’ve seen pit bulls kicked in the head by a horse and flipped repeatedly by a bull and it didn’t stop them. Tasers don’t stop them, pepper spray doesn’t. You need to carry a weapon or break one of their legs or tail.

This dog trainer knows what hes saying. I had the same experience with my dog. She got hyper excited over another dog passing by and i walked over to her to tell her to be quiet and to calm her down and she lunged at me. No lie. This is Serious.
You want to work with a experienced person to help retrain your dog. Seriously.

@Mary V I agree to disagree, one thing that one must note and take into consideration is that they definitely have some sort of wild instinct in them so needless to say that sometimes you get that pet that is gonna decide to do what it wants instead of following its master's orders.

I was a veterinary technician for 7 years and now understand FROM A SPECIFIC PITBBULL INCIDENT. We had this sweetheart pitbull , that we had seen every other month for 3 years , deeply loved and the owner truly was sweet as well, was brought in because it had become aggressive and neurotic out of the blue. Devastatingly, with no other choice, we had to euthanize it. Apparently, in the pit bull breed ( and perhaps all breeds, but I do not know), if there is inbreeding somewhere in the bloodline, there is a genetic disease/defect that at about 3 years, can trigger insanity, aggression, extreme violent behavior towards even the kindest lifelong owner.
** I have to edit this comment and add to it because it literally got some nasty comments, for no real reason, some additional things:
* I was a technician, not a veterinarian.
* I do not have any opinion to state whether or not I condone or advise against owning any breed, or any type of pet for the matter, I just wanted to tell about a situation I HAD SPECIFICALLY where I was given any type of explanation as to why we were euthanizing a pitbull that previously was sweet and then turned insane. It's ALL MY COMMENT EAS TRYING TO SAY
I have heard this as well. It causes the brain to swell and causes neurological disorders and behaviors out of the blue.
I agree that pits have a bad rap because of irresponsible owners and dog fighting/breeding of these animals. So sad that someone died. I know of a little child who was attacked by a neighbors dogs. Both very aggressive pits. I don't blame the dogs, but the owner, for training them to be like that.

Eh.... something still seems off about this story. First off, she had no clothes on when they found her body. Secondly, according to friends and family, she was receiving death threats before she died. Police also tend to rule things out quickly if they think they have the entire picture. I don't think it was the dogs. Or if it was, something provoked them and she got caught in the middle of it.

My uncle was attacked by 2 stray pit bulls and someone who was there and saw it shot both of them, even if they aren't more aggressive than other dogs, they have more capability of hurting someone seriously. Pit bulls have the weakest bite of any of the larger dog breeds plus what they say about them not letting go is incorrect as well, their jaws work exactly the same as any other dog. So they're the 9 year olds :)

Something felt off about this. They found her naked. Drivers allegedly saw her being mauled by the dogs, however, and I know it may be wrong to say but the boyfriend had personally trained them. Anyone who trains dogs knows you introduce people into "the pack"

My ex roommate had two pit bulls and one American bulldog. They were friendly, but became aggressive around each other. They would try to kill each other if they were in the same room together. His smallest pit was the most aggressive. He would growl at his master at times. It didn't help that none of them were neutered, either. He insisted that he wanted puppies from them. He really shouldn't have even had them. He was a terrible dog owner.

Being pit bulls if they saw something they wouldn't just get excited and kill the owner. Their breed would protect the owner, judging by the photos with her and the dogs doesn't look like they would do that. I have a pitweiler. A pitbull and a rottweiler breed. If she hears something or sees something her instinct is to protect me. This story doesn't seem right in my opinion!

I read a news report that she left the dogs in her father's care and he neglected them. I think he should be hold some responsibility.

It was the dogs because the DNA marks on her were consistent with the dogs. Also when the police arrived on the scene they witnessed the dogs eating away at her rib cage. The dogs were euthanized.

usually when a dog owner gets hurt or dies their dogs will try to lick the wounds clean. or in some cases dogs will nibble on toes and fingers to try and "wake" the person up. if she was killed by coyotes and her dogs fought off the coyotes i bet her dogs would lick her clean to try and heal her and bring her back, and someone unknowing might see that and confuse it with them trying to eat the owner, it actually happens quite often

My dad always loved his pitbulls, but he also understood them and what they were capable of. One of his youngest, about 3 years old, went at his girlfriend's leg and he ended up having to put it down. He had a baby a few months back and couldn't take any chances. It hurt him a lot to lose him, but it would have hurt so much more if something terrible had happened.

My sister's cat turned on her ..he was agitated at another male cat that appeared at their door step. Even the door was closed...the cat was hissing..and my sister went over to him to see what it was all about..and he pounced on her instead.

I’m so sorry for her!!! Don’t trust on these dogs…I got a traumatic experience too... When I was pregnant (8 months) I was walking my dog, suddenly 3 pit bulls escaped from the neighbor’s house and attacked my beautiful dog, I still have nightmares about it and that happened in 2015

Sorry this happened to you, hope you see an end to your nightmares. Same thing happened to my brother in law walking his medium size dog, pit shot out from a house and attacked his dog, wound to her neck and he had the worst time trying to get the dog off his dog and he’s a 6 ft tall runner.

I'm pretty sure experts know what they're talking about when they say a pit bull killed its owner. They had the lady's body, they examined her skull and wherever else she was attacked, and came to the conclusion that it was an attack by a pit bull. Stop turning a blind eye to incidents like this just because "dogs can do no harm". They're animals and just like cats, they can turn on their owners.

@@Haterzarefans i doubt the dogs attacked her just because of the breed. Apparently prior to the incident, the girls father had been taking care of the dogs and wasnt doing it properly. It’s posible he was abusing them and suddenly decided to lash out on her once they returned home.

Okay so i read that her father wouldn't feed them regularly. Also their is a video where they go more into depth. Her dad took care of them and he didn't care. So when she got them after awhile they attacked her. It wasn't just cause they had a bad day, they had bad weeks etc before she picked them up. Its sad i know, im raising a puppy pitbull myself so i know the stigma that comes with them.

There is something they left out, the girl did not visit them often, they were keptlocked in an outside kennel and were barely socialized as in these dogs were not given the time and attention needed nor given another thought. WTF is wrong with these idiots that only report a quarter of the story, those 2 dogs were kept separated in kennels, they were outside locked, even the father stated he did not care forthem other than to feed them while his daughter was living away from them. Bet anything they got into a fright, she tried to stop them and they turned on her. Natural animal behavior verses human stupidity and idiotic media not reporting the whole story...

Iv owned Pit Bulls for 20 years.. Iv been bitten multiple times and had plenty of experience with these dogs.. the only way I see this possible is if the dogs got into a fight (which is very likely when owning more than one of these dogs) and when she went to break up the fight she got bitten... but even then I don't see these dogs turning on her and killing her... something is missing..
I'm italian .. bere in italy a girl brought her two dog to the beach and they began to fight vero very strong..she tried to separate them and..they killed her..in front of her mother.. they just didn't manage the anger.. her mother survived but was in shock of course.....

It'a becauss they hate people. I understand why they get sad for the dogs and not care for the human. It's true that the woman's death was sad but it really doesn't concern me for i don't have the things that caused her death such as a pitbull. People should really own a license to own these kinds of dogs. I'm a dog lover but i wouldn't dare owning a pitbull.
Meh... It's just a sad shame really. Is anyone really to blame tho? It seems like a series of unfortunate events that lead up to this incident. The dogs weren't properly cared for and at least one was a rescue previously. She didn't know how to rehabilitate. Ppl can claim ignorance on her part for trying to do something she had little knowledge of, but it's still sad that it resulted in the loss of her life and the dogs lives. I'm sure her intentions were good when she adopted.

I'll understand if it's another dog that will attack you, but your pet? Even if you get angry to your dogs they will still not do something like that, so I think something was off.
Open your eyes. Plenty of people have been mailed to death by their pet dogs, and most of those dogs have been pit bulls. Rottweilers have a pretty poor record, too, but not nearly as bad as pit bulls.

I read a more detailed account of this incident. For some reason, this woman could no longer keep her pit bulls and entrusted them to the care of her father. This could well have been her fatal mistake. Her dad did not like dogs in general and kept them in an outside enclosure even in bad weather. He also often neglected to feed them or give them fresh water It is well known that abuse and neglect can cause behavioral changes, such as aggression, in dogs and other animals. Though this poor woman certainly did not deserve her fate, I believe ultimate blame should be placed on the one who failed to take proper care of her pit bulls and not on the animals themselves.

This is not new. Some pit bulls have been known to turn against their owners. Like the dog trainer said it’s rare for these sort of attacks to occur. This was just an unfortunate incident.
First off the question is where did she get these dogs from? Secound, all dogs before attacking let out some sign or warning. Finally all dogs have a history and reason for something, I bet the dogs had some bad history involving humans. I only hope these dogs won't be killed. (Pit bulls matter too, don't be doggy raciest.)
