  • We've decided to crack open up the West vault and hit you with a session captured during Sled Island 2011. Deer Tick became a bit of a fixture in these parts upon meeting them on the Saturday of last year's fest. We had the honour of releasing the very first song off of their latest release, Divine Providence and then a subsequent cover of Nirvana's Serve the Servents at the conclusion of their 'Deervana' stint. During the session, which took place at the Area, we hatched the plan to hold an after party under the sude-name, Slinky Ray and the Boneless Wonders - which albeit, never came to fruition. However, the band was so kind to put a group of us up when they performed Edmonton Folk Festival.
Carmelita, though written by Warren Zevon in 1972, was first recorded by Canadian singer-songwriter, Murray McLauchlan that same year. Zevon himself would rendition the song four years later, and since, artists like Linda Ronstadt, Dwight Yoakam and Flaco Jimenez have created popular versions.
Our session to be released next week is with Echo Park's, Gothic Tropic when they visited for Sled Island last month - so in memory of all the above, we deemed this a necessary prequel.
