Funny that, because when I first heard Anarchy In the UK at a local disco I thought it WAS Hawkwind. They were the only band I knew of that played that style of block chords. Space Ritual...stuff like Born to Go and Brainstorm. Hawkwind were a massive influence on punk on both sides of the Atlantic. Listen to Pere Ubu's Final Solution....
I can well believe that; they were a covers band called just 'The Pistols', playing around London pubs until Malcolm got his hands on them. I think Steve was the singer originally. SLF were also a covers band; I think a lot of people found their calling when punk broke, realised they had something to say and other people's songs couldn't tell their story anymore.
These things take time... I think a lot of people believe Hawkwind mainly influenced PIL , moreso than The Sex Pistols. But , Lydon's made it clear that they influenced both bands.... I don't think Rudolph and Lemmy ever played together in Hawkwind , as Rudolph was Lemmy's replacement when they kicked the latter one out.
Lydon was mainly influeced by Robert Calvert's aggresive, passionate singing style ond on stage presence (who was indeed Hawkwind best ever singer, lyricist and frontman.....Nik was also an excellent frontman for Hawkwind when Calvert left in the late 70's and Nik returned for a few years from approx 82 to 84)
It's an interesting achievement. Lemmy's only pupil was Sid, widely acknowledged to be the worst bass player ever, which makes Lemmy the worst guitar teacher in the world :-)
Cook does an alright motorik! 🙂
I've heard Lydon saying in early interviews that there would have been no Sex Pistols without Hawkwind...
+Jeremy Watts To be more precise he said Brainstorm in the interview I heard, not just Hawkwind.
Jeremy Watts amazing how many bands say without Hawkwind they'd be no them....yet Hawkwind never get played on the radio!!!! very underrated band!!!!
He used to follow them around and dealt acid to them

urban guerilla...think on
Silver Machine used to be an integral part of the Sex Pistols set list up until mid 1976

No it wasn’t.
Lydon grew up at festivals listening to Hawkwind tripped out of his skull.
Lydon sounds like he's singing the Time Warp...
;)
I thought it was gordon ramsey at first
another classic Jonny doesn't know the words to, just like Hawkiwnd on Greasy Truckers. Gotta Larf!
Great band in their day, but this is a right old dogs breakfast .
Right old dogs shit.
Exactly: and SP fans didn't believe me when I told them that SP owed a lot to the sonic assassins, especially the Lemmy and Paul Rudolf incarnation.
Lydon grew up in the scene where Hawkwind, Alex Harvey, Dr.Feelgood and the Stranglers and taking acid and speed were what you did.

Who is the better singer, John Lydon or Nik Turner..a close call?
When he sings Pretty Vacant live it reminds me of Nik Turner lol Brainstorm here i go !
Lydon was mainly influeced by Robert Calvert's aggresive, passionate singing style ond on stage presence (who was indeed Hawkwind best ever singer, lyricist and frontman.....Nik was also an excellent frontman for Hawkwind when Calvert left in the late 70's and Nik returned for a few years from approx 82 to 84)
history 😉 cheers
How come this song never appears on their live albums, compilations or box sets?
It might be a rights issue. They can play it live, but they can't officially record, release, and make money off of it.
Legend
Lemmy once gave Sid some bass lessons
But not enough.
It's an interesting achievement. Lemmy's only pupil was Sid, widely acknowledged to be the worst bass player ever, which makes Lemmy the worst guitar teacher in the world :-)
