As others have commented, our family also had a stuffed rolled cabbage recipe. Ours used cooked rice mixed in with uncooked ground beef/ground pork, as well as chopped onions, a bit of shredded carrot, some chopped parsley, a bit of salt and pepper, and an egg to bind it all together. The cabbage leaves were rolled, without a toothpick, then a can of tomato sauce was poured overtop, with some garlic powder and salt and pepper, and it was baked in a moderate oven till the flavors had all melded and the cabbage leaves were soft and the meat still tender. It was simple, basic food, and every family in the Midwest had their own version.
My understanding is the recipe began in the Middle East then spread across eastern Europe and beyond. (And the Midwest is full of families whose heritage is Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, Romanian, Lithuanian, etc. on and on.)
Your version looks delicious, too, and I absolutely love the trick of thinning the cabbage leaves to make them more easily rolled - and that you then included the scraps in the soup. Just wonderful, and I can't wait to try your version, which I think I will make tonight, actually, since I happen to have all the ingredients on-hand.
Thank you, and Happy New Year, Taiji-san.

My mother used to make stuffed cabbage. Similar ingredients with the addition of rice, but I believe she cooked them in the oven as with stuffed bell peppers.

I've been making your recipes and eating this way for a few weeks now. It is so fun to try new things. Even my sister came to my house and tried some and loved it. I also bought extra-long chopsticks like yours to cook with. Thanks for telling us about your origami videos. When I teach my unit on Japan, I will use your videos to help teach my class how to make origami!

My mom added rice in the meat mix maybe grated carrots and polish kielbasa cut into coins to cook out side the rolls with some tomatoes to stew. She didn’t do potatoes and all that to really make a soup with the cabbage rolls. I just love cabbage rolls in general. Solid tip to thin the one end of the cabbage to make it easier to roll. Think I’ll go make some.

Ooooh this is awesome! Adding this to my ready-to-eat freezer list (see below). Is it possible to wrap the rolls twice with cabbage to add more greens? Would that change the cooking time? Thanks so much for sharing this.
I like to make larger amounts with the goal of freezing single portions, especially soups in the colder months. On a hectic day there's still something whole and healthy to eat that is just as fast as a frozen pizza. The practice has been life-changing. Saying that, it's common to have big chest freezers in the US so depending where you are, your mileage may vary. I don't know much about canning but it seems to me this recipe might be a good candidate for that as well (perhaps with smaller rolls).

It’s definitely different from my grandma s German version. Funny fact that this is eaten in Japan as well, especially in the pre-RUclips era when everybody can cook all countries kitchens. I will try it for sure. Is this 100% your mummies recipe or isn’t it influenced by the fact you live inSourhern (?) Germany too? Thanks for the Video:)

Reminds me of Rusian/Polish/Eastern European dishes like Golubtsi/Gołąbki/Galumpki, according to a simple google search they stem from Jewish Cabbage Roll recipes dating back 2000 years. They probably made their way to Japan during the Meiji Restoration in the 1800's
