Hushang Ebtehaj (Persian: هوشنگ ابتهاج‎, with the pen name of H. E. Sayeh (Persian: ه. ا. سایه‎, lit. Shade) is an Iranian poet of the 20th century, whose life and work spans many of Iran's political, cultural and literary upheavals.
Poem:
امروز نه آغاز و نه انجام جهان است
ای بس غم و شادی که پس پرده نهان است
گر مرد رهی غم مخور از دوری و دیری
دانی که رسیدن هنر گام زمان است
تو رهرو دیرینه ی سر منزل عشقی
بنگر که ز خون تو به هر گام نشان است
آبی که بر آسود زمینش بخورد زود
دریا شود آن رود که پیوسته روان است
باشد که یکی هم به نشانی بنشیند
بس تیر که در چله ی این کهنه کمان است
از روی تو دل کندنم آموخت زمانه
این دیده از آن روست که خونابه فشان است
دردا و دریغا که در این بازی خونین
بازیچه ی ایام دل آدمیان است
دل بر گذر قافله ی لاله و گل داشت
این دشت که پامال سواران خزان است
روزی که بجنبد نفس باد بهاری
بینی که گل و سبزه کران تا به کران است
ای کوه تو فریاد من امروز شنیدی
دردی ست درین سینه که همزاد جهان است
از داد و وداد آن همه گفتند و نکردند
یارب چه قدر فاصله ی دست و زبان است
خون می چکد از دیده در این کنج صبوری
این صبر که من می کنم افشردن جان است
از راه مرو سایه که آن گوهر مقصود
گنجی ست که اندر قدم راهروان است
As many asked me to make some video on Farsi literature, to let them practice standard formal Persian, and to get a bit acquainted with Persian literature, I have decided to make hopefully 1 video each Friday on literature. Each time a piece of poetry is chosen and read for you, I will add an English translation (please note that sometimes there is no recognized poetic translation available, so that I have to translate it on my own which will not be a real literary translation, as this episode one). I will not explain all words and phrases like my other series, but at the end of the clip, you will see some new words that you can take note and learn. The main purpose of this series is at first to let you enjoy our literature, secondly to listen to some standard formal Farsi and learn a bit of vocabulary. I hope you enjoy it.
