Peckham polartec fleece jackets have been utilized by the United States Marine Corps for decades, along with other branches of the US Military. For good reason, these jackets are fantastic at providing warmth, staying warm when dry, being light weight, providing a boxier fit for layering.
The military spent millions of dollars adapting a layering protocol for its tactical military purposes. If it works for the USMC, it’ll probably work for you.
Head to eBay or any army surplus store, either online or in person, to pick one of these up for anywhere between $25-50.
As an example, I purchased mine for $50 brand new. I have other models that are used that were sourced for $25.

Same size you were in normal jackets. I wear mostly smalls and mediums and this USMC is a medium with a roomy fit.

Rah!! Hey do you by chance know what that other insulating layer was? We called it coyote skin I believe, worn underneath the fleece
