It’s November 2021 and here’s your monthly catch-up on The Fretboard Atlas!
Recently in the All Things Guitar section, we’ve been looking at Common Chord Progressions and Alternate Tunings - this month we’re going to look further into Thumbpicking, and I’ve written a new Thumbpicking Étude for you that covers position changes, diverging from the set thumbpicking patterns, and that really makes you focus on distinguishing the melody from the accompaniment.
In the Under The Hood section, we have been looking at Varying Your Compositional Ideas and more recently Travelling as a Musician. This month I’d like to talk about reading and writing Guitar Tablature, and the benefits of knowing how to read a tab.
Over the last while in the Shane’s Originals section, we looked at The Peacock Strut, Grove Road, and most recently Koramantra. This month by request, we’re going to take a look at my tune The Rebellion from my album Zephyrus.
In the Traditional Irish Music section we’ve recently looked at The Rocky Road To Dublin and Spike Island Lasses. What I want to do this month is to jump into Variations a bit more in-depth, because even though we have been covering them for each tune, I’ve been getting questions from some of the subscribers about how to come up with variations and what approaches we can use, so we’re going to dive deep into Variations this month. And, for any of you non-trad musicians, Variations are a great way to get better at improvising, and coming up with your own melodies. We’re also going to take a look at a common session tune called My Darling Asleep.
In the Interviews and Extras section we heard from the amazing blues-rock guitarist Leif De Leeuw from The Netherlands. This month we’re taking a break from interviews but we are going to go up to the McNally Guitars workshop in County Armagh, and also I’m going to bring you along on my trip to Germany, where I’m playing at the Viernheim Guitar Night.
