Just saw the film today for the Prime early release. It was a great film. The characters, the story etc. I felt the movie was not too long, I felt it was just right. The pacing was fantastic, along with the little details, dropped like cookie cribs, but not slowing down the pacing. Heart was a prominent theme and it felt as is you wanted to root for the protagonist(s) the entire time. As a resident fan of D&D, the Johns got it right! There was plenty of little details that were spot on to the game, but never once overshadowed the story and pacing of the film. I was smitten for 2 hours and twenty minutes. A huge home run for me. Seeing it again in theaters on April

I've been playing D&D since the 80s. I really hope this is a great movie. I don't need it to be hyper accurate to the lore (we all remember the owlbear), but just well made and a fun time. Please let it be better than the first one.

I'm really pleased to see a review from a non-D&D player, because I think a movie should stand or fall on its own merits. I'm glad you liked it, a few reviewers from the D&D market throught it "should be longer" (Those guys...) or "That species wasn't rendered right". You get the same with war movies when the rivet counters get furious about some incorrect detail on a model tank. Reception, D&D types and non D&D types seems positive overall. To me, that indicates a movie worth watching.

The use of five foot squares probably predates Gauntlet...(Sorry, old geezer here, couldn't resist.) Battlemaps for DnD, often drawn on graph paper, use these squares
The thing about height is it’s so attached to western ideals of masculinity. So many Asians and Latin people are tiny af compared to more people in the global north. Same with hair growth and, you know, *size*

I agree. I was pleasantly surprised and glad that it held up to the game and the Forgotten Realms.
I wish it was longer with another 20 minutes of creatures and combat.

I've never watched / played D&D either but I do plan on seeing this after the consistent positive reviews. and I do love Game Night!
Yes, I think John said somewhere that "Freaks and Geeks" was his first encounter with D&D and they got him hooked on the set and he was a fan since.
