Once, in the early 1970s, high school choruses in the Atlanta area had 5 or 10 kids from each participate in a massive Chichester Psalms performance. I was very fortunate to have been chosen, and all these years later, recall what a fantastic experience it was.
Bernstein stated explicitly in his writing that the part for countertenor may be sung by either a countertenor or a boy soprano, but never by a woman. Not respecting the master's will is barbaric.
Jesus Christ, they probably simply couldn't find a boy soprano nor afford a counter tenor. They don't grow on trees. I'm pretty sure it doesn't have anything to do with "respecting Bernstein's will". Art is performed in the real world and sometimes, you have to compromise in order to be able to perform a piece at all. Also - did Bernstein give any reason why it shouldn't be sung by a girl or woman?
peaceblossom8 the solo is supposed to be David. Thus his explicit reasoning for it never be sung by a woman. I do understand that compromise is a part of art, but finding a boy soloist (or a countertenor) is not particularly hard. That said, this was a fine performance. I prefer with the full orchestra, but Bernstein arranged this version with organ, harp, and percussion so that is still keeping true to his vision.
Si. ¿Porque une nina ? Interprétation terne et sans émotion. Sofi Jeannin malgré le sourire de façade est à côté de la plaque. ET ne parvient pas à tirer le Chœur de Radio-France de son ennui. Voyez plutôt Lenny : ruclips.net/video/7Yhnml4DW9g/видео.html

I think this is the best performance of this I've heard. I wish I could hear it like this in person.
I was blessed to sing this with local Choral Society. It is a prayer to think of and be with God. Thank you
Beautiful timing & coordination - obviously a very skilled conductor & choir! An absolute pleasure to listen to!
Exquisite from start to finish. Every sound was beautiful, and the last movement -- as always -- made me weep.
Someone weeps and someone sings by heart along. I am almost 50, and sang this when I was just 16. Great choir. Felicitations.
So lush and beautiful!!
JE NE PEUX MEMPECHER DE PLEURER;; POURTANT JE LAI CHANTER EN CHOEUR ALTO
Je suis dans un choeur d'enfants composé de garçons et un de mes amis va faire le solo .
I woke to hear this and had to run to document this lest I forget this celestial sound
l'équilibre et le mélange sont magnifiques
Merveilleux
Superbe...
Very beautiful.

Je suis à la maîtrise de Caen

Lovely performance...& a 'nice' 2nd movement solo, though, um...have heard somewhat younger BOYS do it better. Still, beautiful music, thanks !

Yes, he explicitely pointed the jewish liturgic background of this oeuvre.
The Maîtrise de Radio France has got the very best boy's voices of the land. It's defintely THE tree on which they grow.

Can't stand choir conductors mouthing the words, and she evens mouths the words of the soloist.
It's a timing thing
Dissonant
The soloist is supposed to be a BOY soprano or a counter tenor
Also the soloist clearly doesn’t know the Hebrew pronunciation
This was intended for a boy singer. Different sound.

Assolutamente giusta una ragazza o una voce bianca invece.
