First time I ever saw John Prine he had an opening act guess who? John Hiatt. Prine had an accompanist on second acoustic guitar; Hiatt all he had was hisself well and his own guitar & a small electric piano, too. Sparse stage setting but a feast of musical entertainment. Thanksgiving eve 1985.
I mean, if he cared about other people's health, why wasn't he wearing a mask? But the real question is, after a year why still wear masks? The science right, gotta follow the science, this video would have been perfect with no masks
I kid you not...I’ve had this tune on repeat for the last two hours, but I could take eight hours more...absolutely brilliant...’n great lyrics as well...what fine artists sound like when laced together ❤️
It is truly beautiful. I've been at a few of his live shows; my favorite was the Strawberry Music Festival 🍓 up near Yosemite Valley in California. I chatted with him after the show; he's a mellow, kind-hearted, and witty gentleman.
Jerry Douglas on the dobro is amazing as is his band. And John Hiatt just keeps writing/singing/playing incredibly beautiful music abut the American experience.
For the last 40 years every album is better than the last one, I haven't heard a bad album from John Hiatt yet. His songs are stories of his life & he makes no excuses.
I would have to respectfully disagree. I'm a fan of Hiatt and have all his albums, but he is very similar to Neil Young where he has many duff albums amongst the great ones.
All too often these days musicians, even the technically proficient, simply go through the motions. No joy, no feel, no love for the greatest gift given to our species. Yet John is enjoying every moment here. Graceful and kind is his tone, with grit and an intangible definition of cadence and sound us mere mortals count only hope to conjure. Beautiful.
I'm 70 years old, some how..having survived a living a life in NYC's lower East side (aka East Village) many many moons ago (60's). I could have been the subject of this tune. So, I haven't purchased any music in some time. I did this, yesterday. Great jobs guys!!
Oh dear lordy, no one anywhere any genre is close, John is the top of the pyramid.. Im all over the board at 65, been playing my whole life, from folk to punk and all of the great bands of my youth. John is what every musician aspires to be. Plus he kills live. I'm an old deadhead soooo there u go
Heard this band's song in a small restaurant... it was played by the owner in his phone, a handsome old man.. I loved the beat so went and asked the song name.. he wrote it for me with shaky hands in a small piece of paper and gave it to me with a smile.❤
I watch RUclips videos all of the time. Can't remember enjoying one more than this in a long time. Their joy just spills over. Loved their faces when they knew that they had nailed it.
What a wonderful song; absolutely brilliant Like the live recording and new treatment ... John is one of the truest and most awesome songwriters around This is one treat in lockdown - gonna put on a few of his albums tonight and enjoy ✅
Many years ago, a few people and I were talking to John after a show at McCabes. The guy standing next to me asked John, "When are you going to record All the Lilacs in Ohio?" John looked at him blankly and said, "I've never heard of that. I don't think it's one of mine." I laughed (I'd known John for a while) and said, "John, I have a tape of you singing it!" He just shrugged and said, "Well I don't remember it." I guess when you've written as many songs as he has, you forget a few. He must have come across an old demo or something and relearned the song. I'm glad, because it's one of my old favorites.
That look they all have of sharing the collaborative experience of something special says it all. Smiles of satisfaction in partaking of real team effort. It's one of the best feelings to have.

Sends a message to me too; not a same as you tho. Hiatt's constitution needs no coverup. And nor the others in that room either ... Meaning no offense to all others here, we can agree to disagree while still enjoying an American musical treasure's music.
You've just got to love how they all break out into smiles when the dobro starts up! The sound guy's wearing masks stamps this masterpiece during this terrible worldwide pandemic. Beautiful music will outlive us all. Bravo Johnny and the band.
Right, you are! Very creative; what was that, anyway? It was like he was playing emotional mapping points, and each just happened to be made out of notes. Not a melody in the conventional sense, but a sonic thrill ride that fits perfectly!

Well, you met her there on a New York City stair
You were throwing up on your shoes
Tryin' to write the great book well it really had you shook
With a bad case of wintertime blues
So you drank her down to the ragged side of town
Shared a taxi to carry her home
Then she left her handkerchief there beside you on the seat
As if to emphasize that you were all alone
Smelled like springtime when you were just a boy
And all the lilacs in Ohio
All the lilacs in Ohio, there ya go
In the city streets in the dirty winter snow
All the lilacs in Ohio-hio
Well, she is the love story you speak of
When you talk to Sam at the bar
But it's in the details your story often fails
Yeah, close, but no cigar
You might see your own ass in a double whiskey glass
But you cannot erase her smile
And you'll never write it down, never find her in this town
Of phantom dreams and fingernail files
It was springtime and you were just a boy
And all the lilacs in Ohio
All the lilacs in Ohio, there ya go
In city streets in the dirty winter snow
All the lilacs in Ohio-hio
So you pin her handkerchief to clean white linen sheets
And you unmake your bed and crawl in
You imagine her there and you're tangled in her hair
And she smells like flowers again
And it's springtime and you are just a boy
And all the lilacs in Ohio
All the lilacs in Ohio, there ya go
In the city streets and the dirty winter snow
All the lilacs in Ohio-hio
