A previous employee who was fired for standing up for herself is not a Art director at another company. What is crazy is only women who where harassed at this company.

There is always a chance but what you have now that you didn't have before is knowledge. You have learned from the toxic jobs you have gone through will help you see toxic jobs in the future. If I had listened to my instincts I would never have taken the job offer from my last job which was by far the most toxic I have ever had. But what I learned is that I value so many other things so much more than money and it is not worth it to jump into a new job because it looks like the only option that might come my way. I can't say I never will again but I have made an active decision to only apply for jobs that offer at least the bare minimum of what I need to set myself up for the next step up and to not jump at something just because I feel I have to now.

I was speaking to a “therapist” in my field- and when I mentioned the toxic workplace I was in, she said that yes, it’s a highly “competitive” field, I was so angry that she would call a toxic workplace “competitive” as if the problem was I couldn’t deal with competition/ I was incapable of keeping up/ I did not play dirty.
This isn’t competition. This is not healthy “competition”.
call it what it is you so called “career theorists” and “hr “. But It’s really abuse .
They know it. They don’t care. As long as it’s not happening to them. As long as they are included in the clique. As long as they bully you and tell you/ treat you like shit.
Unprofessional, immature behavior, toxic behavior-- and saying “yes, this field is highly competitive”
I hope she and people like her get their karma in life for their abuse of other people.

    • @JenniferBrick
      @JenniferBrick  3 года назад +11

Toxicity is personal, for reach of these behaviors falls on a spectrum for us.
This is why I think it's important to acknowledge someone's experience. If it was toxic for you, it was toxic for you. You decide what that is for you. TBH I would expect a therapist to know this.

How do you know that the therapist is actually abusive? None of us here were here to witness the conversation. Perhaps the way you were explaining it made her think that it was an issue of competition, not toxicity. Also, regardless of your opinion of her, she is a therapist. She went through the training. Does that mean that she is a decent one? No. Nonetheless, she studied to be a therapist.

Possibly she was using the word ‘competitive’ to highlight how negative some environments can be but your word ‘toxic’ clashed with that. It’s always a good idea to clarify to someone that they have misunderstood because you’re also making some assumptions about what she meant even though you have the right to feel the way you do. When I was working in a toxic job environment where I was being treated horribly at first I just sort of felt a sense of shock, numbness and paralysis as it felt impossible for me to process what I was going through, followed by a lot of self-blame and self-scrutiny at what I was doing "wrong" to "deserve" this treatment. (Of course, the gaslighting helped with that.) It was after that when the "I'm not a quitter, I'm going to show them and do better and survive this treatment" kicked in. When even my best efforts were met with more criticism and abuse, that's when I began to realize that the problem was with them, not me, and that I couldn't fight individuals who in a more powerful position than me from making my daily life a hell and cut my losses.

My biggest problem now is- I don’t have a spouse that gets the mental torture I experienced- believes I need to let it go, etc, etc.
And I have to hide the abuse I experienced and the trauma from it at my new job- I smile and carry on and I pretend that nothing ever happened to me- I have no one to speak to about it all. I tell myself when my head says “no one” that I have God.
I’m in my head trying to heal from the abuse and fear all the time.

@@jmk2530 Stephen and JMK- I have experienced probably all of the circumstances and thoughts you both shared! Wow, its incredible our stories are so similar. Sometimes I start to blame myself again but if I am able to become aware of my thoughts, I tell myself to “stop gaslighting yourself.”. I, too, at first thought it was my fault for receiving ill treatment at my current job of 3 years but now, recently in the last year or so, I’ve realized no matter what I do or how good of an employee I am it doesn’t change their poor treatment of me. And my BF, even though he doesn’t outright say it, is surely sick of hearing me ramble on about it. Lately he has begun to tell me to just let it go or he only half listens before changing the subject. I know its not fair to him but I have no-one else and feel alone in my struggle. NOONE but YOU will ever know exactly what you’ve been through and how it made you feel or affected you. There is a Turkish proverb that goes: “The flame will burn only the place it landed”- meaning only You who are experiencing a situation will know how it feels and the personal affects. Try your best to put away money and start a job search. This type of situation will only get worse. Their underhanded remarks and demeaning, gossip, etc. will only escalate. Sometimes I wish I could be “laid off” for budgetary reasons so I can collect unemployment and just rest my weary mind for a bit before I head into another job. The worst part is I feel so badly about myself and distrustful of future employers that I am scared to apply to new jobs.

I was a first-year teacher in a toxic workplace and underperforming school. I didn't quit my job because it was my first professional job. I was let go and then unfairly and unofficially dismissed at the end of the year. I knew from the start I was not wanted or needed; no matter how well I performed or how positive a change I made, I was disposable to them. They can have their twisted sense of authority and friendship, they can have their money. I know there is no such thing as an authentic mask, I know that you cannot eat money. I know what is good and what is good for me. I let them go and took hold of my future elsewhere; I am grateful it only took a year of my time. Giving my resume out to people I want to work with, to interests I want to pursue and keep, is worth every piece and every peace of me.

I believe the main, #1 reason people stay in a toxic job is simply because they have to, or rather, for the health insurance. As most companies make you wait 60-90 days for coverage to kick in, there is absolutely no way to leave your current job and experience a gap in health care if you or a family member has health issues. You can't exactly tell little Suzie, "sorry kid, no insulin for 90 days...tough it out." This is one of the biggest problems with employment in America, health care being tied to your employment and, having to wait any amount of time for coverage once you begin your new job. Until we separate health care from employment, or, demand all employers make health care available from day one this will always be a hurdle. Gee, its almost as if the system were designed as a form of accepted wage slavery.

This video landed in my feed at an interesting time. You described so many of the conversations and questions I’ve had with myself for the last year. I struggled… hard. However, when I was journaling about my situation (helps me sort through my thoughts) I thought I was asking the right questions… about money and opportunity. However, I had one more variable - my health. The stress impacted me physically in a terrible way. So all those choices about money and opportunity really boiled down to a choice of money or my health… and it wasn’t a choice… it was a conclusion. I gave notice last week.

Union, manager, HR and the police are all totally useless. Bullies are lazy bums and stupid managers are scared of the bullies. They say about me I'm crazy, i dink, i'm a stalker all bs defamation of character. They removed disciplinary measures. They should arrest the bullies and fire the manager. Action speaks louder than nasty words. It destroys my reputation. I will never quit to make these bums ever win and if I transfer to another hospital and mobbing starts again I don't know all the managers ect like in every department like now. another way to look at it is many times, it’s got to do with self sabotaging moves. 1) you don’t build an emergency fund for in between jobs situation, which means you are potentially putting yourself at risk 2) you try to think “positive” by ignoring the signs of toxic environment until one day u are forced to go and it hits u hard and painful. 3) you live day by day and paycheck to paycheck without planning ahead for more options in life. as the old saying goes “ failing to plan is planning to fail” 4) you do not upskill yourself continuously at your own time. when u have more skills u have less worry about getting the next job 5) you do not know when to quit and move on to a place that is better align with your career goals and ideal working environment
There is no perfect job in the world, afterall jobs are not created to fit U perfectly. Jobs are created for business needs and to serve stakeholders. It’s many times hard to find a good job but you need to identify your own base line, is compromising health worth it? Are you leading an unrealistic high maintenance lifestyle? If you accept to be miserable at work, then why are u passing ur misery to people around you? Be honest with yourself, make plans and take bold painful moves so u can open up more options in life. It’s better to make painful move for potential better job than to do nth and stay in painful place forever..

The lack of capabilities of Managers have always frustrated me and being passed on the promotion in terms of favouritism is demotivating and the thought of leaving played in my mind for so many times. I am a bit late for change at 50 plus years but recently again thinking of quitting and looking for another job. I heard this quote back then and it hit me hard...concerning abusive relationships> "once you KNOW, you're no longer a victim, but a VOLUNTEER". I know I should quit, I look back and should have walked out during a few times when the harassment and discrimination was more obvious. I'm afraid of staying until I get fired. The decision to stay or quit is up to each individual for sure but working in business and learning some basics in economics has kind of opened my eyes to the fact that what you are getting paid in money might not be worth what you have to exchange in other valuable things in your life beyond time.

💵 - I’m currently making big life changes to create a savings, largely for this reason. I’m in my third career job where I’ve found myself pigeonholed into the “immediate” business needs, resulting in my expertise being applied to mundane tasks that don’t empower me as an employee or a job candidate in my field. Ive found that each time I was stuck until a new job was accepted because I have no savings to support me. This led to a dramatic shift in my life so that I don’t fall into the same scenario again. Now Im focusing on my finances and reorganization, like trading in my dream car for a practical car to save money, as well as focusing on thorough job research and not accepting “any” position. Im also considering entrepreneurship because Im tired of working for companies that don’t care about their employees to any extent beyond the paycheck.

I'm so conflicted then, because I am DONE with upper management and their childish, abusive behavior. Entire departments have quit en masse because of the treatment they have received throughout a difficult project. My worry is that my skills are very niche and might not carry over to a different company, in which case I would basically have to start at the bottom again. I'm in my mid 40s. I used to get bullied for YEARS as a kid and have even been hospitalized from the bullying.
I’m an adult now and refuse to let people at work put me out of my misery lol

Money, but then again uts also my biggest motivator to leave as im currently paid less than the 25% for my position despite regularly getting praises for my work. Cant really say it was a bad deal, I moved up in a line of work you dont expect to move up in and the original job got me out of a job that had me considering suicide. This job was always merely a stepping stone and it's beyond time i take another step.

100% about being passed over for promotions and other things can really erode your self confidence. Can you make a video about gaining it again?

I stayed in a toxic environment, persevered until the toxic people left the workplace. Then i missed out on a promotion and then persevered ahainst that despite dying inside. Now everyone is nice and its actually ok but the baggage is in my mind and i still cant be happy. I am stuck cause its not so bad and a lot better than before.

Same here being mobbed, gaslighting, harassed at the hospital for 12 years. Top workers for 38 years have never been suspended. Jealousy and misery. So best to not change hospitals. Never let bullies try to control you from quitting. Never let bums win in life.hhh
