      I'm being honest here, I'm not trying to shoot you down or anything. It was a spiritual thing why folks were laughing. He was up there giving such a false humility, acting so down trodden, so that people would think he was such a deep spiritual man. He wanted them to think he was a humble broken man. When he is far from humility and brokenness.
      Don't the pitty seekers tell everybody how much pain their in, shouting it from the rooftops so that people feel bad for them? Or, don't people seeking for honor tell people how much they've been through, and yet they are here taking the pain and helping others? A real genuine humble broken person wants to be alone, doesn't want to talk, doesn't want people's pitty, doesn't tell people because it's embracing. The last thing in the world a humbled person would do is preach a sermon about how humble he is.

    I believe John 6:44. That no one can come to Jesus (believe in Him, see Him for Who He is, marvel over Him) unless the Father draws them. Lot of paraphrasing there. But that 'work of God' needs to happen first in order for what Pastor Piper is speaking of, to happen. Hopefully people who are seeking Christian counseling have experienced this. And Pastor Piper does bring this up saying "God gives people the ability to glorify God." I love how this great Pastor humbling seeks to speak truth.

    I finally relocated this video. It has been a mystery as to the dissonance between the tone of his heart and the reception of the audience... But after couple of profound incidences have happened in my life, I finally get what's going on here in the video. ...
    This is God humbling Piper. And it's actually caught on video. Depending upon how much anyone knows of Pipers struggles, he has always had to deal with pushback from people and misunderstanding even back from the original Desiring God book days where contrarians want to add in their objections... And it still happens. When Francis Chan spoke at one of DG's conferences, Piper introduced him with mentioning Chan's "Crazy Love" and he did so with a bit of reserve for oncoming success of the book, saying that, that kind of success can be a dangerous thing. Piper's talked about God saving him from the praise of men, and this is an actual recorded example of God's reiteration to Piper that he needs. This is one of the many things that God imposes in Pipers life to keep his passion and humility. To actually see it on video is pretty amazing because it's evident by how much of a bizarre and surreal dichotomy is present between Piper's message and the audiences response. It's like a lens between them and the audience is hearing something completely different! I've had this happen to me on a smaller scale and I couldn't believe that what I was saying was being heard completely different... And when God showed me these things, I thought about this Piper video.
    It's a privilege to see Gods working of these things in one's own life. It's the chastening that he does to those he loves.

    Very sad!!!This brother has such a tender heart. One of my fav living preachers.
    He is pouring out his heart to 6,000 counselors who lack the sensitivity of heart, conscience and holy spiritual, to hear this message by obeying James’ words, who says,
    “Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.” - James 4:9
    My prayer:
    “Father I thank you for the consistency and power you have placed upon John Piper’s.
    Thank you for his love for you, your kingdom and your people.
    Strengthen him through this experience. Keep him from being moved negatively by this experience.
    I pray that the people here would go back and watch this message. And be pricked in their consciences where they lacked sober mindedness.
    Father I pray you would use this message to convince and convict other teachers of your word of how important it is to be sober minded when declaring and teaching the Word of God.
    I thank you LORD for hearing and using this message for THE PRAISE OF YOUR GLORY. I ask all these things in Jesus name, amen!”
    Thanks brother of setting this up the correct way so that other undiscerning brothers and sisters could be AWARE of the grievous way the audience approached this message in the beginning.
    Thank God that the presence of God came upon John after praying. Johns continence and posture changed completely because of what took place in the beginning.
    To God be the Glory.
    This message is profound and requires that I listen to it a few times. No exaggeration.
    I have never seen PRAISE in this way and will not see it the same.
    Thanks Brother John.

    • @theQandA
      @theQandA 5 лет назад +5

      I believe 38:32-40:14 answers your question. God’s love for us is in pursuit of His own praise, and praising Him is where we are made whole. So it’s just not ultimately about us. It’s ultimately about Him, and we benefit from that, and He is pleased to extend that benefit to us at great cost to Himself, for His own glory. - And we can only enter into this by the supernatural work of God, and our practical part of that is prayer (also see 42:21).

Was the laughter due to embarrassment (of their own condition), or spiritual coma? The level of the knowledge of God is indeed corresponding to the view of God in the heart of these people. There is no reverence and awe of God whatsoever, and they might as well be non-believers. No wonder, the generation of entertainment addicted church goers have become so deaf to God's voice. It shows the condition of the heart and their walk with God. It is so sad. What is wrong with these people? I hope that many of this crowd have come to repentance and have grown to understand the introduction part of this message since it was preached over 7 years ago. I wonder if the main reason they laughed is because for the first time, somebody gets what it's like to be a counselor? Here's a guy who's clearly been in ministry forever, is well-known; and even as a renowned Bible scholar, he is often doubtful of his motives at times. But if anyone is honest with themselves, every "Biblical counselor" has to know from the very start that Jeremiah 17:9 is true: "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?" (ESV). So I think the crowd is laughing because John Piper gets it better than most people do, and the crowd gets what Piper is saying better than anyone else.
    Either that, or they thought that he was actually trying to be funny while acting serious. lol.

      ruclips.net/video/gbUMZeFv-aw/видео.html
      I love that John Piper takes this seriously, maybe it was miscommunication between the audience and the speaker. I don’t believe they meant to be rude, but maybe they didn’t read John’s tone?
      Still, I think the message he was trying to show here is deeply important and humbling.

    Personally, I really appreciate his message, but I am really really struggling with it. I don't think I desire to be made much of, but I certainly have competing desires that I know God is relentlessly crushing in my life and frankly, I feel crushed. Jesus says his yoke is easy and his burden is light. I hear testimonies to that effect, but I feel none of it. I feel like dying. Like I'm sinking into the Mariana Trench. 😰
    I feel like I've come too far in the Christian life to intentionally seek a carnal life, but like all my striving to do the right thing (by God and others) is being taken as an insult to God which I cannot retract, and yet I can't really feel guilty for. Or, to put it better, I feel no joy in being released/saved from. Even considering God's supremely exulted position, why the need to burn such as me in Hell for eternity?
    How then can I see His grace as glorious?

      Hey Sam, I just wanted to say that I've struggled with God and wrestled with his love sometimes too. Ultimately though, God didn't create his children to throw them away in hell. He loves us all imperfect and want's to make us whole. Seeing is I think true. God has done a lot for me in my life, and it's when I start to forget the things he's done that I start to get upset at him. Specifically, I have had a hard time being alone for many years. But I also haven't been what those I've wanted wished for, or wanted those who were available to me. Maybe this is what you are struggling with also. I've got angry, prayed, and told god things in prayers. But he reminds me that it's not him who's chosen to reject me. If I want something better I need to become what someone better would want. He kindly said I was blaming him for others. Whatever you are struggling with, love is a choice. God loves you, you can return that love or not, but please don't blame him if the world and all in it are not perfectly as we want. We have our agency, and you and me are part of that imperfection. Prayer is the method of my seeing, I know when you pray God will answer. When that happens, I feel grace and love for him too, and know that I will become more whole someday. This was a good talk for me, it helped me see some things I did not before. Hopefully you can see his grace and love for you soon. I know it's not Hell he wishes for you. Hell is for those who hate him (which he does not warrant), or hate their brothers and sisters on earth and in heaven. We all, including the apostle Paul, have struggled with the flesh. Maybe prayer and reading what he told Paul will help. Pray to see, and best wishes to you and your journey to wholeness.

    So apparently laughter is wrong? Why are reformed people always so miserable? I also thought Piper was using a little bit of dry self-depricating humor myself but then I think he handled it poorly by getting defensive and doing what he says he needs to not do. If your theology doesn't allow you to laugh especially at yourself then I think you need to take another look at Jesus' character in the Gospels.

    Jesus Restores Two Demon-Possessed Men
    28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way.
    29“What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”
    30Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding.
    31The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”
    32He said to them, “Go!”So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men.
    34Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.
    This passage tells me that what Pastor Piper is discussing and preaching and seeking in his sermon to communicate to us is true! It brings me to the above passage because not only is demon possession cause a hard, grieving degree of bad mental heatlh as a by-product of demon possession, but when you read the town's reaction to Jesus' mercy, that they pleaded for him to leave shows that their minds were broken just as much, because their hearts were not right.
    Ultimately, broken mental health is a heart problem as Pastor MacArthur has been teaching for decades as well. I also see a dynamic as well - a lack of love, a lack of provisions, loneliness, sadness, unwanted thoughts and a desire to carry some thoughts out - these along with many others can and usually lead many of us to mental health problems. Those who have murdered, those committing both mental, emotional and physical adultery, those who rape, who molester and so many other sinful behaviors create mental health issues, all of which come from the heart and the mind of thoughts we allow to play into our thinking.
    Often, it starts with wicked behavior and sin. Over time, we develop thought patterns and habits that speak and or support those sinful behaviors (masturbation, porn, sexual fantasies, profane language, hearing profane language, drunkenness, etc).

  • @DidierMagents

    they laugh at him but he is totally serious but it could be that this is not a reformed audience, which might mean that they are not used to confess or acknowledge their sin openly, as your salvation is based on your performance not on Christ’s performance or righteousness so to speak like that is almost to say you are not saved. The same as, if you love Me, you will obey My commandments - this doesn’t mean that through obeying you will receive His love (performance) rather that you will see that when you love God, you will find a bent in you that wants to obey His commandments. The point he makes about praise not being a means to achieve but an outflow of His grace is glorious, not of himself but cause of the truth of that statement-the blatant narcissism that is encouraged, hides the deep seated narcissism in comparison and we can easily miss that or live with it as being ok

      @internetuser7156 2 года назад +1

      @@DidierMagents I see your point. From another perspective, the way he led up to the the confession could very easily be misconstrued as an ice breaker joke, which many preachers commonly use to engage their audiences. He even said that he was telling them that as a way to connect with them. Every true Christian knows we are ALL sinners so it’s easy to see how such a “confession” the way he built it up could be understood to be a bit of a joke. As the old saying goes, there’s truth to every joke. While sin is ultimately no laughing matter, the way he said it was downright comical, whether he knew it or not. Nd his response to the audience’s laughter just made it worse because they still thought he was joking. I did notice they were quiet at some points in his intro. This is also common in sermon writing, speech writing,and comical writing. I think the greater danger lies in the judgements people are making about the audience more than 10 years after the event. It was clearly a communication misfire on Piper’s part and a misunderstanding on the audience.

    • @DidierMagents
      @DidierMagents 2 года назад +1

      @@internetuser7156 thank you for taking the time to respond and interact graciously - I will put myself in that audience as I am and finding myself many a time being lighthearted about something that is very serious as I fail to see it at that point in time - that is not due to my ability but instead I would do that all the time par for the grace of God. Saved yes born again yes , justified yes but still being sanctified and even that I can not do without Jesus…of course I think I can, so many a time yet I am completely mistaken. Even though I believe that very strongly, it’s a battle that won’t leave me till the day this body of death becomes soil. May we strive towards a point where we aim to be filled with the understanding of a 100% push towards the Sovereignty of God & also the 100% responsibility of man that makes for that amazing 100% … two opposite sides, trapped in the dialectic yet mature enough to know that the mind is not the ultimate.
