1938 - Pay an insane price for the first fully automatic Camera 2018 - Pay an insane price for the first fully manual (mostly) plastic instant Camera What a world we live on... I understand they were made by a small company and aiming toward a serious photographer, who like shooting instant film as a hobby, but with that price I might getting their SX-70 with manual control instead. FUJI I'm shouting to you, please make one bloody fully manual instax already. Plastic or not, no body would care as long as the price is right.
The camera weighs 806 grams, I seriously doubt it's mostly plastic. I would really like both Fuji and Polaroid to produce their own new versions of fully manual, quality instant cameras to drive down prices. However, I know all to well from working at a photography store that the market today is insane. Fuji had to quit their FP-100C, Polaroid Originals had to quit their Spectra. The margins these companies (as well as camera stores) have to deal with are incredibly harsh. And so, they have to focus on a specific market, which for Polaroid and Fuji's branch has become amateurs. I am so incredibly thankful for Mint. By tasking themselves with being the "serious instant company", they have carved out what I really hope to be a moderately stable platform for continued production and innovation. I get that most people aren't aware of the state of things and the decisions camera manufacturers have to make these days, but just think about the fact that absolutely everyone now has a fully functional camera in their pocket at all times.
Great video, but the pictures you took don't show anything that cannot be done with an €120 Instax Wide Camera. I would have loved to see some portrait pictures with a blurred background, with the aperture wide open. Next time you use this camera, think of that! I would love to see a demo of the sharpness of this lens, and how well the focusing works - a real pain with the Instax Wide add-one portrait loupe. When I use instax film on a cloudy day, I avoid pictures with a wide dynamic range - a dark foreground with bright, clouded sky. This will result in a dull foreground and blownout sky. You get the instax colours to shine by keeping the sky out of the frame.
Thank you for this excellent video and review of the RF 70. How would you rate it against the SLR 670X? I know the Polaroid has a larger format. But do you think you get better image quality from the RF 70? Any other advantages either way? Thank you so much for your help
If Fuji or Polaroid were actually willing to listen to more advanced users, we could have such a camera for half of that price tag. I'm glad MiNT stepped up to deliver this product, although I can't afford it it's nice to have the option.
Now now Marco. Be honest with Yourself. The bird sounds were edited in xD Hahah. Awesome video. The camera looks amazing. I'll probably get it one day. Really enjoyed that outdoors environment! It's good that You don't do every video in the studio. :D
Nice video. I hope someone will make an Instax back for the RB67, or Graflock it would be nice to shoot Instax on them since 100c is getting hard to pick up.
I have a question, I use a fujifilm instax wide 300 with an adapter to be able to shoot instax wide and instax square and this adptador has 4 supports as they have it Rf70, is it possible to put square film in this camera?
I got my RF70 a few days ago. My unit has a couple of issues: 1) pincushion distortion; 2) the rangefinder patch seems misaligned; 3) the tripod mount is metal, but it is embedded in the plastic frame and would bend the frame when mounted on a tripod; not very stable even on a tripod. Maybe their quality control is not good. One other issue which has only occurred once: some kind of electrical issue where the the camera seems to have reset--the battery/film counter window info disappeared; then reappeared a few seconds later with the film count reset. I'm pretty disappointed given the $900 price tag.
Does the rangefinder on your RF70 have vertical misalignment? I just received mine, and it is very difficult to focus because the rangefinder images can't fully coincide due to vertical misalignment.
Great video. Have you changed your mind about Instax film? In your past videos, you compared it unfavourably to Polaroid Originals film. A couple of things about the camera that made me decide to hold off: 1. It's size ( no where near as compact as my SLR670-S; just couldn't see this as a camera I'd be lugging around), 2. The lens is a 3 element one, with only the outer being glass (rest: plastic) 3. I'm not crazy about the Instax wide format vs, the square format for Polaroid Originals or Instax Square film. Your thoughts?
I guess it all comes down to what features you prioritise and what you are willing to give up. The SLR670s strikes the best balance of size, weight and manual control with the effort from Mint. But the aperture is rather small for indoors or dimmer places, not to mention night portraits. The RF70 is indeed not much larger than the film cartridge, considering it was to put a range finder, larger enough viewfinder, space for AA batteries, a grip and the bellow large and long enough to cover the 6*10 image area. It has a f5.6 aperture that you can use if needed, which is night and day in terms of shutter speed for indoors and handheld night shots becomes possible. Let’s hope Polaroid originals joins with Mint to remake the SX70, and gives us f2.8-5.6. And please improve the film, it’s expensive and not up to the game of instax.
Beginner question: when would you use A+1 and A-1 respectively? Would you switch settings for the second exposure in your double exposure shot or keep both images at A-1?
exposure control is pretty important a+ and - would be reasonable for shots that contain alot of white or black to composate the wrong messurement, their is a video on the channel about that topic. i always depends on the subject, but i try to underexpose both shots abit, one f-stop maybr is too much
Did you ever try slr670 also from MINT, Marco? I would like to know your opinion about this camera since I am surprised that there's few videos about 670, but I think that's a great modified edition.
i really like the 670 you can compare it to the openSX70 cameras i made but its a great camera with the modificationa. i would go for the X to have flash sync
How those this one compare to the SLR670-X MING EDITION I would really like to buy one but I dont know much about photography so it's really hard for me to decided which one will be a better choice for me.
it's a bit hard to compare them since they shoot different film types. if you are new to photography i would go with one of the automatic cameras that are alot cheaper, both these cameras are more for the die hard instant people :) so take a look at the fuji SQ-6 maybe
@@AnalogThings thanks for the response I didnt know they were different type of films I see they are wider, but I would like to know your personal opinion as which one you would prefer and why if possible. Thanks again I'll take a look at the Fuji SQ-6
i can't tell you the perfect answer for it, but i guess it's hard to build a shutter that speed for this size. the camera would get alot more expensive if the shutter would need to be faster, the NDs are kinda ok to use, you can just leave one on the camera and it's fine
The ND filter allows to shoot eg a portrait wide open, with a blurred background. If you enlarge the aperture number, then the background will not be blurred.
I want this camera so bad. I have the Instax wide, I love it, but I wanna take instant photography more seriously. But $1,000+ is so much.. I wish there were some kind of payment plan. Maybe in it official release, but I doubt it :/
Just curious, I have a polaroid 600se and i was thinking about buying a back for it that would allow me to shoot instax wide film which costs $800......or do you think i would be better off getting this camera instead?
The price is what's getting to me too. For that price, I'd be inclined to save some cash and get their new SLR670-X plus a couple of film packs instead. The only thing the RF70 has going for it is the glass and cheaper film, but even then, the sample images so far don't seem any sharper than the ones created by other fujifilm cameras.

Dmitriy Fedorov For such a small company without a billionaire family backing, AND design and built a NEW instax camera with professional requested features on their own, one must find ways to R&D money. Look at their narrow, way-too-niche product line, you should worry how can they make money indeed.
Every single sample image I have seen online from this camera, including yours, looks no better than the cheap Fuji Instax Wide. Those of us who have used the old Land Cameras with peel apart Fuji film know what this film is capable of. But we don't have ONE camera currently in production that can image worth a damn. This camera had me so excited, it doesn't use zone focus! But every single image looks HORRIBLE. Why can't one company make an instax wide camera that you can focus sharply?
peel apart is stil a different kind of film then integral, i cant see an integral image as good as typ100 but yes, the wide also makes very good images, the point of this one is the manual control
@@AnalogThings But none of the photos look crisp, not just in the examples here but in every one I've seen, despite manual control (and range-finding focus instead of zone focus). We have the original higher end instax here, the Japan-only 500AF with auto focus and a quality lens, but its having age issues and sometimes the auto-focus misses. For years I've been waiting for a decent Instax Wide camera and... I just don't see the results here. The 500AF uses the Wide film and while not quite as good as the pro Land camera, it occasionally would nail it and be super-sharp when the focus picks up the correct point (the issue in ours is the focus, so it should be more consistent).
It looks like a medium format camera, it almost costs as much as a used medium format camera, yet it only shoots low-quality Instax photos? Okay then ...
I'm sorry, as much as a I love instant photography, nothing justifies spending $800 - $900 on a camera that can only produce 3.9x2.4 inch pictures. I even doubt the film itself is capable of rendering details the lens can produce. Manual control of shutter and aperture? Sure!, I love it. But this is going way too far in my opinion. I just stick to my Lomo Instant Wide and Instax 500 AF
$800.00 ??? Are you Joking? For a plastic Instax camera ... the price needs to be no more than $150 Max. They have forgotten the market for this camera, it isn't the serious photographer its the hobby photographer.
this camera is very well build, only the housing is plastic and a good quality. what is your knowledge based on? this has a full metal body inside and performs well
Rob Define „hobby photographer“. This one is aimed at enthusiasts who want full control while taking pictures, something that your mass produced „150 dollar“ consumer Instax isn’t capable of. This camera has a working rangefinder mechanism, adjustable shutter speed and aperture and a pretty fast glass lens. You will NEVER EVER get these features for „no more than 150 bucks“. Do your research next time.
Rob, some people pay 1000 dollars for an Iphone wich was created to quickly become obsolete. This camera is built with high quality materials, and will last years and years. No need to get an app or to connect with bluetooth. This is analogic, and manualy controlled. Did you know that even the most expensive polaroid camera (the SLR SX-70 Alpha 1) is made out of plastic? This is a story of passion. Hobby or not hobby.
$800-$900, no way Jose. For that price I could buy a Nikon F3 (an all metal body), a 50mm f1.4, a 85mm f2, a 28mm f2.8, and a 105mm f2.8, (all the lenses mentioned are all metal Nikkor Ai-s lenses). That’s a complete system for a camera and lenses that would last another 50 years. Why in my right mind, would I buy a plastic Polaroid camera that will break in two years and the cost of the film is astronomical compared to buying 35mm film for that money. Hey Ese, no way man. I’ll give $200 for the camera and some film, take it or leave it, that’s my final offer man.
Jas Mann Instax wide is 69*99mm, which is 8 frames of 35mm combined. In films terms this is indeed 6 by 10 medium format. Yes the shell is plastic, but the inner frame is metal. And yes you can buy that kit, but I wonder how often you’ll carry the whole system around. And yes the 35mm may gives you prints way larger than the 3R size instax, yet I wonder how often will you do it or you just have the lab scan it and view on your tiny phone. And instax got the image done in 2 minutes, let me know when your print is done.
Haha Yeah Polaroid ain't worth it cause 35mil is cHeApeR. You know what else is cheaper? digital. And You know what's even cheaper? NOT DOING PHOTOGRAPHY AT ALL! Genius I know.
Are you discounting the 90% of the entire line of professional 35mm camera bodies of the 90s? They were almost all plastic and the workhorses of the decade.
PO's still not close to what the original Polaroid's were whereas Instax have proven itself with its chemistry to last a long time when kept well. I don't think they will kill it. They make alot of money out of their instax line probably in the asian market.
Instax is one of the biggest sellers in the photo realm. Even Wide, being the least prioritized product sells pretty well. It’s far far higher quality than Polaroids current product. It’s build on the much superior Kodak technology of the 70’s and 80’s. Technology too good for both to exist at the same time. One of Kodak’s and instant photography’s darkest hours. Polaroids film is really a scam quality and price wise. Polaroid is the one who is going to die if they don’t up their game a lot very soon.
Do you ever look at the sales of these companies? Fuji has made instax since the 90s and Polaroid literally went out of business. Their newfound film sales will still never compare to the massive success of instax
Finally a technical review of this camera, which makes sense. Thanks. This look like a really interesting option

Why in my right mind, would I buy a plastic Polaroid camera that will break in two years and the cost of the film is astronomical compared to buying 35mm film for that money. Hey Ese, no way man. I’ll give $200 for the camera and some film, take it or leave it, that’s my final offer man.
Try to produce a instant tack sharp 6x9cm print with a Nikon F3 and all those lenses, I'll watch
Mint, good luck selling a plastic camera at the prices you're asking.
He said it has a metal body inside
But it's clearly plastic on the outside.
and there are no cameras that have plastic casing that are good?
Are you discounting the 90% of the entire line of professional 35mm camera bodies of the 90s? They were almost all plastic and the workhorses of the decade.
Just wait til Fuji announces its killing off this film too, the world will be much better. I'll stick with Polaroid.
