- Five hundred pieces of fan art later and we’re finally at the season one finale for Rise of the TMNT, so I reanimated the Macho Gazpacho Fury Kick to mark the occasion!
“Insane in the Mama Train” and “Endgame” have some of the sickest choreographed animated fights I’ve ever seen America produce and the Turtle Tots flashback might honestly be my favorite thing I’ve seen in the entire series. So forgive me for not doing a piece of art for “Mama Train” but I HAD to draw that first panel from the flashback and when you see how much effort I put into it you’ll understand why I couldn’t possibly do a third art for this video.
But here’s to season one of what is quickly becoming my favorite TMNT iteration, bring on season two and all the animation studies it holds!

Fun fact about the ninja mind meld scene. When Leo and Raph are dealing the final blows to their enemies there's a cross shot where it shows a close up on their faces, focus on the eyes. Raph and Leo actually trade eyes which is an INSANE attention to detail
OMG I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO NOTICED THAT. YESS THAT WAS SO COOL I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH
When people talk about Leo's insecurity and lack of confidence they aren't talking about his fighting ability, they're talking about his feelings about his place on the team and in the family itself. in Minotaur Maze he feels upset about his portals not working, hears another character say "I was going through a real existential crisis," then drags his brothers into the Maze of Death, while asking them to refer to him as their "champion." In Portaljacked he tells Hueso he's nothing without his brothers ("I need my brainy guy and my smashy guy and my eats-peanut-butter-with-his-fingers guy"). And I know you aren't to S2 yet but there's a scene coming up where Leo laments that the rest of the gang doesn't trust him. there's also episodes that are just about Leo craving validation from adults he looks up to (basically anything with Jupiter Jim in it and that one basketball episode in S2). it's a pretty well established part of his character that he has some issues.
also Leo being gay is part of what I like about him LMAO
The teapot is actually shown a few times in the background throughout the season, especially in episodes focusing on other pieces of the dark armor:
Very briefly in Down with the Sickness at the start of the episode
In The Longest Fight early in the episode with Splinter pouring tea from it. Is also the first episode with an armor piece shown.
Hot Soup: The Game at the very end, also an episode focused on the foot finding the armor

I think Mayhem was supposed to have a big role in season 2 but with the whole cutting the second season in half it caused the mayhem plot to not be finished.
They brought up Mayhem because he was initially supposed to stop Draxum. Remember the very first episode where he had the vial of Ooze on his collar trying to run away with it.
Insane in the Mama Train is the episode I show people to convince them to give Rise a chance. It’s everything Rise is in one single episode. It’s got the humor and the sick ass action. This show is literally just “What if Looney Tunes was a Shonen anime?” and this episode shows that to people
P.S. The Red Hamato suits are a reference to the original TMNT indie comic where they all wore red bandanas instead of their modern separate colors
Funny you should say that because Looney Tunes actually did become a Shounen Anime once.

Donnie chucking that weight is one of my favorite clips of this show and it doesn’t get enough attention. Not for the animation but the simple fact that donnie is strong as fuck. That thing was at least 25-50 lbs if not closer to 100

@@BarteNERDS oh hell yes!! Like god! And people comment about Mikey’s strength-which is totally valid- but I have never seen anyone else comment about Donnie. He is legit proportionally the strongest of the brothers and I love that he’s not the stereotypical string bean nerd
i think the flashback was less about Mayhem and more about showing Draxum's reasoning for everything he's done. He believed he was saving Yokai from this prophecized threat and with him getting the dark armor he's finally acomplished his goal (at least he thinks)
It also does give background on why Mayhem had stolen that vial in the first episode and who ordered him to do it
Also they do show the pot throughout the series It's just way more noticeable that episode If you rewatch you'll notice it more 👍🏽

Yo my hand was killllllllllllllllllling me by the end of that animation. It actually made me wanna really get to work learning some Toonboom since I could see the frames where they just tweaked the rigged character instead of animating frame-by-frame and my god would that have saved me so much time.
@@BarteNERDS Yeaahhh I know people use it a lot in animations so they don't have just draw everything over and over again Very useful! Rise definitely utilizes that Can't wait to see anymore animation you make as you learn!
the one thing I noticed for this episode, was that it created a slight alternate scenario, of if donnie would have even needed his battle shell, or even his tech at all, if splinter had trained them earlier on. because a few times in the episode, he shows to not be vunerable without it, unlike in the movie.
yeah, someone last year after the movie aired made an interesting analysis of this and how the movie seemed to backtrack on what the series established abt Donnie's shell. I don't remember the userhandle anymore, but it was pretty good! They also pointed out that irl softshell turtles actually have the shell more akin yo like a harder skin? kinda like human skin but smoother I guess? so that was interesting to learn too from watching the show+movie and seeing the fans discuss it :D
but also, I got the vibe from the movie that Donnie became more self-aware of his shell again between this fight and the movie? + this fight, they are more prepared for the fights vs the movie where the situation ismore unexpected. + Donnie's discomfort in the movie is more prominent I guess bc of the whole newness of the situation too? Hmm, I guess maybe they could have suggested with the movie that in those few months btwn series and movie, something changed abt Donnie's and the rest of the family's attention to detail abt his shell? but idk, I also think they probably fudged a bunch of things to make the movie work as a more standalone movie ^^

In a deleted scene from s2, the Shredder practically destroys Donnie's battle shell, and he's left barely in commission, and his brothers basically were forced to watch as the shredder destroyed it. the movie could have been planned to continue and address things from that, but idk.

Right? I've had some depressing ass moments the last couple months but this shit always managed to squeak laughs out of me.
A lot of people do headcanon Leo as secretly insecure and to be honest, I never saw it. Mostly, I admire that he has that kind of confidence. With the turtles being a lot of people's comfort characters, though, and with a lot of people having insecurities (myself included), it's not surprising that they'd project that onto their favorite characters. I do it all the time. It's not a bad thing at all. It doesn't seem to me like it was something intentionally written into Leo's character, though.
Edit: I rewatched the show and he is, in fact, very noticeably insecure. I don’t know how i or anyone else missed it the first time ‘round.

Headcanon? It’s just a basic part of his character. It even is a huge plot point in the movie for Leo’s actions, and was very clearly written into his character. His confidence is pretty much all bravado to mask his insecurity. If we say that it’s a head canon, pretty much every aspect of the turtles are “headcanons”.
There’s a couple of videos analyzing Leo’s character that you should watch. People aren’t “looking too deeply” or “projecting”, all they’re doing is pointing out very specific moments where he feels insecure and where he overcompensates.
It’s more if the fact you didn’t look too deeply into his character, and tbh, from what I’ve seen a lot of ppl don’t. To the point some even were calling Leo in the movie “out of character”.

I can't remember which episode I commented on it, but Skully appeared in the first episode Mystic Mayhem on a shelf on Splinter's 'Do Not Touch Cabinet', as well as shown when Splinter pours himself tea in The Longest Fight, Hot Soup the Game, and Snow Day episodes. So yes, they did pull a 'We Hint at Something Along the Way'.

I'm working on a non-TMNT related animation (which I talked about on the Discord) but I did have an idea for a ROTTMNT picture that I may (re)attempt.
52:52 "Why did they bring up Mayhem?" To show a bit of backstory for the introduction of Mayhem in the first episode, and part of the reason why Draxum was after Mayhem in the first place. Basically, it's to 'bookend' Mayhem's arc (as in he/she/it's purpose has been fulfilled).

Love seeing Joe's mind break every time he sees a new Rise action sequence omg 👀 this is one of the things that makes these reaction streams so fun to watch! like, 'ahhhh the animation in this show is SO GOOD' I love seeing fresh reactions to Rise!

So Rise just scratches all the right parts of my back. I always see reactor's thumbnails where they're "breaking" over whatever they're watching and the faces just look so forced, I hope my genuine love of the artwork in this fucking show shines through those types of thumbnails.

That's also why your videos are fun to watch :D Like if you're laughing for example, it's hard not to laugh with and the thumbnails carry over that infectious joy so easily. They actually did show Skully before! I don’t remember in what episode or episodes but in one of my rewatches I remember seeing Splinter pour his tea with it while talking to the turtles or something

The flashback with their lemonade stand was so sweet! Like they can’t do a real one for obvious reasons but Splinter is still there supporting them. Most Splinters are protective of the kids and love them but Rise Splinter really feels like a regular dad who can have fun with his kids.
So far I’ve noticed that all the reaction channels reacting to ROTTMNT… all stop at season 1 and don’t go and watch season 2… which is just as epic and full of amazing comedy.

50:34 That’s literally my favorite Raph moment in the entire show, it’s just so silly and I’m a huge geek when it comes to space stuff so the music and visuals made me very happy when I saw that.
Nobody talks about Insane in the Mama Train. It's like, my favorite episode because the action scenes are just perfect, the humor is spot on, and the end of the episode makes my toes curl in the best way! Live it.

in hot soup: the game, the artifact that the foot were looking for was skully!! they said they were looking for an artifact that was in the possession of lou jitsu and at the end of the episode, splinter is pouring tea out of skully. it's one of my favorite details in this show
That story about the pens is so funny cause that's happened to me so many times like once I spent like 10 dollars on a shitty 80's tmnt donnie that was in bad condition cause I didnt want to look broke

Well as much as I'm here for the lore, I'm more excited to see what they pulled off in their sophomore year. It's always fun watching a TV show's animation get progressively better as the animators start getting more comfortable drawing everyone and just from what I've seen in the movie and the final Shredder fight, I know these guys popped tf off.

And imagine, Splinter only trained them for a few HOURS and they managed to pull all this off. The turtles always had it in them to be badasses, but they were allowed to be kids for once. Maybe for too long, but hey, things always look better in hindsight. 😂
Honestly I never thought of any of the characters as queer except for Hypno and Warren when it got shown that they are in a relationship, and this is coming from a queer person. When people point at characters and say that they're "gay" or "trans" it kinda annoyed me, it felt like they were being stereotypical about things, but I was also thinking they could be projecting to cope, which is fairs. I'm just very annoyed cause alot of the people I have come across have made their personalities about being queer, get hostile with people when people don't agree with them that a character is queer, and/or completely miss the point of something just to make it about something queer related. I think I'm just irritated with people putting labels on everything, this is not me getting mad at Joe though, this is just me irritated with myself. Absolutely loved this reaction, holy shit. rewatched these two eps before watching the video and holy moly there were so many tiny details that i forgot about- my best guess on the whole "council of heads" scene with mayhem is that they may have been intending to go further with mayhem and the mystic city's storyline but couldnt due to the cancellation of the show? cuz the whole "mayhem is smarter than they seem" thing was hinted at a little bit in the first episode- not 100% sure either way though. also! in regards to the foreshadowing thing, there are a few i cant mention yet because of spoilers, but i do have one to share! in the mystic library episode, when mikey gets tossed into the kiddie room for doing the thing we all wanted to do, a train goes by right in the very foreground, and its actually an exact replica of Big Mama's train from insane in the mama train! which i just think is a neat easter egg :]

UPDATE. i havent rewatched the whole series yet, but a friend told me about some of the times theyve spotted the teapot in their watchthrough, so i figured id share-

- down with the sickness, start of the episode, splinter almost knocks it off a table
- the longest fight, start of the episode, splinter is pouring tea from it
- hot soup: the game, end of the episode, splinter is again pouring tea from it
I actually remember the first time I saw the teapot (before Endgame, of course) was back in that one episode; "Hot Soup: The Game", I think. At the very end when it's revealed that the Lou Jitsu game is fucked up NES quality, Splinter can be seen pouring himself a cup of tea before he goes to play it. It's the same Shredder teapot.
Hey!! Very late to the party! But at 26:36 (when you mention Leo’s little pose over his eye) it’s not him being just flashy, but also being in a defensive stance for most sword fighters!
I’m currently learning how to use a rapier (newbie and 3/4 months into learning) and one of the most important lessons I’ve learnt is both hands out at ALL times. The hand that isn’t holding a sword protects any unguarded areas that the sword cannot reach so you can push the blade away. In that specific shot, Leo was in position… 3? (If I recall correctly) so most of his body but his face was protected. I honestly just realized that little detail as well HAHAHAHAHA

I think the Mayhem flashback was just to explain why his character was running from Draxum’s goons in the first episode. Although it really doesn’t play a role in the future either… Mayhem is a bit under-utilized imo 😅 it would’ve been cool to have gotten even one Mayhem centric episode

Yeah probably, still, was just an odd place to put the flashback because it didn't really matter all that much to the episode. Like Mayhem always coulda saved them without the flashback explaining why, Mayhem does that often. I feel like it woulda worked better at the start of the episode.
It doesn't like detract from the episode or anything and I love seeing Mayhem and the Mystic City Bebop leaders, it just felt like a weird place for it.

FINISHED THE REACTION WOOHOO!! I just wanna put this out there that I'm glad that Rise had such a great impact, for both motivation and your following! I was pretty much the same thing, Rise getting me into all things TMNT and motivating me to draw fanart again (btw you played a HUGE role in that motivation, w/o you I would have never tried redrawing Rise screenshots!).

P.S. Coming from someone who's rewatched this show ALOT, they've have actually shown the teapot in previous episodes before! One such situation is from Hot Soup: The Game, way before the end, you see Splinter holding it before jumping to play the game! I feel like there are more episodes where it does show Splinters teapot but I currently cant remember them off the top of my head.

Amazing video! I wanted to ask what your thoughts are on the new Mutant Mayhem trailer? Have you talked about it on discord? Have you seen it? If not will you do a short reactions for it? Even if you have watched it that would be really cool to see
Personally I love pretty much everything about it and I have high hopes that the movie will be good (fingers crossed, everyone I talk to/watch either has lots of faith in Seth Rogan or are already convinced the movie is going to be garbage because of him but I mean if it’s as good as the trailer I’m sure it’ll be fine)

@@lukewarmsoda1147 tbh, that whole poll is just wrong. So many better characters who show autistic traits got knocked out really early on. We got a canon autistic character being knocked out by (I think) Homestuck. It’s just a popularity contest.
But yeah, I voted Donnie too. Mob fits it as well, but he’s not canon like Donnie is, and personally I am super conflicted on Mob Psycho as a whole lol
