  • I Plow Snow for the Municipality here in Nova Scotia, Canada & Welcome to my Channel!
    So far this winter we are not getting much snow here is Nova Scotia, so here is a short clip from one of the last snowfalls we had back in April 2022. It didn't get a lot of hits when I first posted it back in the spring, so I decided to re-edited it and post it again as I think it deserves another chance. It was a beautiful sunny day for plowing snow and a great way to end the season!
    Thank you for watching and please like, comment and subscribe if you'd like to help support my channel as it is greatly appreciated!
    I appreciate your support!

    The last 27 years I worked was for the municipality where I live . During those years I learned the average citizen has no clue what it takes to keep everything going . The main concern for them is roads always clear to drive on , water coming out of the tap when they turn it on and a toilet that flushes when they need it . The long hours , weird shifts , call outs for plowing , digging broken water mains and clearing blocked sewers in the rain , snow , -40 to baking heat in the summer doesn't matter . If it's Christmas morning or your child is graduating that's OK too the phone is ringing and you're off to work . What people like you do doesn't go unnoticed or unappreciated by guys like me that know what's really going on . I wave to every plow going by . Thanks for what you do .

    Jim you told me in a previous video hats off to me for being a first responder. We are all on the same team. Weather I am in a yelling truck with yellow lights and a snow plow or a fire truck we are all together. Nothing will work if the team doesn’t work together.
    Right back at ya buddy. When plowing on a clear day it makes for a nice easy day.
    Just a little bit of snow fall today. 98% of the blizzard snow is gone.
    As always keep the good content coming and take care and be safe.👍👍

      Well said Tom! We had about 5 inches of snow one day last week and that's the most we had all winter. It's gone now and is 12 celsius and raining at the moment here in Nova Scotia. The weather forecast looking pretty mild for next week too so I'm not sure when we will start getting some snow.

    Evening, from Washington State, Jim! I meant to ask you earlier, do the amber fog lights next to your plow lights really help to cut the glare in a white-out? We're looking for some new ideas.
    Safe travels, snowfighter!

    • @JimHowDigsDirt
      @JimHowDigsDirt  Год назад +1

      Hi Andrew! I find the fog lights do help a bit in some situations. I think the biggest benefit is that when people see them they know there is a plow truck coming as you don't see too many other rigs with that set up around here. Over in Newfoundland snow plows have flashing blue strobe lights to make them stand out. I think that's a great idea!

    • @JimHowDigsDirt
      @JimHowDigsDirt  Год назад

      Yes you are right! I had a few comments where people think I and plowing too fast. The camera can be deceptive for sure.

    • @brandonbld17
      @brandonbld17 Год назад

      @@JimHowDigsDirt also something I've noticed when it comes to cameras that you may not have considered is wide-angle cameras make it look like you're going much faster than you are if you get one that's more of a narrow field of view you don't see as much but it looks like everything is going the normal speed for example if you're doing 30 km an hour with a camera that has 140-degree field-of-view it could be a lot but not very far so it looks like you're doing 40 maybe 50 km an hour but if you had a narrow field of view camera around 90 it would see further but not as much around it and it would look like you're going the normal speed need our eyes are very good at doing depth perception and seeing everything around us a camera is can't quite do clothes and fart at the same time our eyes are amazing when it comes to seeing the environment around us camera technology hasn't quite reached that far yet

  • @nerdgarage

    Now that's the kind of weather you want to do snow plowing in. Beautiful ! The view forward down the side of the truck with most of the wing in view but still looking mainly forward is an awsome view. One can see the scenery and whats coming forward, but can also see the snow flying off the blades. When the front blade isnt doing much and most of it's on the wing, the view slightly down like at 6:20 still shows the forward view but also the snow off the end of the wing. Beautiful video Jim.

    Hey Jim do you keep your wing in a certain position all the time so your used to knowing where it is or do you adjust on the fly? Thanks again sweet vid as usual

    • @boblee6101
      @boblee6101 Год назад +2

      If his truck is like mine, once it’s on the ground, it’s extended as far as it’ll go. So you just have to know your position in the road. But you can watch your wing in a fender mirror. The right side of my slusher has an orange flag. If I keep that in the centre of the road or just to this side of that side, my wing won’t hit any signs or guardrails. When shouldering, I line the wheels on the right side of my truck on the white line. That has to be done a lot slower

    • @JimHowDigsDirt
      @JimHowDigsDirt  Год назад +2

      If there is no frost in the ground and the shoulders of the road are soft I will pick up the wing a little just to keep from throwing gravel into the ditch. If the ground is hard I can press a button on the joystick that is called power float, and that will let the wing drag and adjust to the contour of the shoulders. Thanks for the question!

    Hey man I just got my DZ license last month and started plowing here in Ontario last week. I actually started watching your videos before I even started my DZ course and they inspired me. We had a big storm earlier in the week and it was the first time I got to drop iron. I did one run with an experienced guy but now I’m on my own. Did lots of salt and sand before dropping iron. What an experience haha I do night shift on call from 12:00 am to 12:00 pm. Couple times I couldn’t see for than 25ft in front of my truck haha I just had to line my flag up best I could with the centre line try to watch my wing in the right fender mirror while I coasted at 30 - 35km. Love this job! My route takes 1.5 hours so I can get 6 runs in a 12 hour shift. But now the boss said I can choose between two others. One takes 4 hours to complete. I’ll probably take that one. Plus if I take that one I get an older stick shift truck. The one I’m in now is a 5 year old international automatic.
    Cheers and thanks brother!

      60km/h maximum allowed where I am. When plowing. Salting or sanding can’t go faster 48km/h or my computer starts yelling at me. When the blue lights are off (amber always on) I’m not plowing or spreading so can go the speed limit
