When I arrived at Gatwick wearing my sunflower lanyard I immediately got routed towards the "Sunflower lane". Unfortunately I thought I was getting separated from others for a whole different reason. But when I figured out why, I felt respected, appreciated and embraced. When I told my parents, they came close to tears.

I’ve had one of these for a while , but I’ve only just started using it. I have a “hidden disability” that causes a problem using disabled spaces in carparks. In reality I’m severely disabled and in a power chair but you can’t tell that until I get out the car!!
Being young means that most people can get the wrong impression and may judge me for misusing the spaces. When in reality, I can’t walk a single step!
I also have some communication issues and I think that the sunflower lanyard highlights the fact that I may need a bit of extra time and space. Although I love the idea very much I just don’t think it’s advertised enough and the majority of people that I know have absolutely no clue what it’s for. I hope that there will be more media campaigns to change this in the future.

I'm also autistic and type one diabetic! I used to wear the lanyard in supermarkets and the staff would find all remaining items on my shopping list if i went a bit blank. Now however so many people wear one for face mask exemption that the staff have got fed up with the scheme which is a shame.

@@rebekkahhuck166 Of course I did, but they just didn't want to know, all they did was totally and deliberately ignore me and just treated me like I was some lower form of life with no rights, just like a "pleb" in ancient roman times and it looks like far too many service providers still have their heads stuck in that era and that attitude has no place in any supposedly "civilised" society like ours here in 21st century Britain. And that was boots the pharmacy chain, and also, needless to say when I complained to their head office using their hopelessly inadequate web form all I got again was completely ignored, SHAME on them. Honestly, I ought to sign up to somewhere like trip advisor and tell the world how they treat disabled customers, like SCUM!

@@rebekkahhuck166 You've hit the nail there, we certainly DO need far better education about the more severe life ruining hidden disorders, but there's a problem, you can only educate folk when they're willing to learn, but the trouble is that far too many out there just don't want to know, especially them with status who think they're some kind of big shot and are far too grossly condescending, so first we must thoroughly overcome all the deliberate ignorance and put all the old outdated urban myths to bed for good as in my experience far too many staff who are supposedly "trained about hidden disabilities" still know nothing of misophonia or severe heat intolerance and instead just refuse to recognise such appalling problems as disabilities and insist on only blindly following the age old far too outdated attitudes and just treating such sufferers with nothing but totally unjustified total contempt. And even the disability campaign crowd need to get far more in touch with reality and start recognising such appalling life ruining disorders as disabilities which they most definitely are.

Didn’t know this originated from Gatwick. I was at the airport just yesterday and I was treated like everyone else. Even one airplane attendant was especially rude to me when I was trying to ask for clarification of something. So I thought this lanyard was only recognized in the US because I wore it for the first time at JFK like a week ago and the minute one of the staff members saw this lanyard, they immediately stopped socializing with their coworkers and personally assisted me in the crazy long, loud and hectic security line. This person felt like an angel to me. Though on my arrival back via JFK, despite our flight being two hours late, a totally different JFK staff was downright nasty and sarcastic to me when there was confusion about how to fill out the customs form. Me and everyone in the line didn’t know what to do and when I asked her why the app said to go to Lane 11 and no one was there, she was so dismissive and disrespectful. I was on the verge of having a meltdown so I just became mute and tried to keep it together.
Moral of the story: some staff will recognize this lanyard and actually help you; while others might not have been trained to recognize it or choose to ignore it.
    Thank you for this video.
