I like to think of Barok van Zieks and Kazuma as representing two aspects of Edgeworth for Ryunosuke. Van Zieks is the established, feared prosecutor with a reputation who turns out to be a decent guy, and Kazume is the long-time friend turned rival. Oh, and Van Zieks has that overly ornate European fashion sense. I really like that he moves from seeming like a racist jerk to an understanding ally by the end.

@@ChenKanaPiano One of the essay prompts I've had laying around for a while is to trace all the connections/reflections/echoes from GAA to the other AA games, and vice-versa. The Van Zieks/Kazuma to Edgeworth connection is a big part of that.
While I agree that Kazuma and Barok are deconstructed versions of Edgeworth, I think it goes beyond this. Spoilers below for those who haven't finished the Chronicles:
Kazuma is the defense attorney who turns into a prosecutor based on his mentor's influence (ironically, with his mentor being van Zieks himself). Kazuma chooses to stay as a prosecutor at the end of the game, similar to Edgeworth during Investigations 2. Kazuma is the friend to the defense attorney (Ryunosuke) who inspired said defense attorney to become a lawyer. Kazuma also has the tragic death of the father backstory, which inspired him to act - and he is unable to move forward until he learns the truth about his father's death.
Meanwhile, Barok represents a different side of Edgeworth. Obviously, the aesthetic lol. But Barok is more about being the rival to the defense attorney who grows to accept and respect his opponent. He also shares 2 prominent, similar storylines with Edgeworth: that being the 4th and 5th cases of Ace Attorney game 1. Barok is accused of a recent murder, and then accused of a second, more major crime afterwards - similar to how Edgeworth was framed for murder and was then accused of killing his own father when he confessed out of long standing guilt. Barok also prosecuted a former case in the past where he unknowingly used falsified evidence given to him by someone else, which ended up leading to the execution of a serial killer. This is a parallel to Edgeworth from Rise from the Ashes. Both are horrified to learn that the actual criminal mastermind gave them false evidence to convict someone in court of a crime that they technically did not commit.
My headcannon is that Van Zieks is an ancestor of von Karma (Edgeworth probably inherited some personality traits from him since he was basically an adoptive father) and Kazuma is Edgeworth’s direct ancestor

Although also clearly intimidating, this track (especially with your wonderful piano skills) also has an air of tragedy about it. It almost hints to the player that Barok has been wounded in the past by some tragic event (which of course we learn later on in detail) and that instead of trying to heal and move on from it, he has hardened himself to feelings of any sort, and almost plays into his role of "The Reaper of the Bailey" as an attempt to hide from his pain, rather than confront it. It is only though the actions of Ryu and the player that Barok has the resolve (ba dum tish) to deal with his past head on. Or you know, that's at least my opinion. :)
A mesmerizing tune to enjoy as I savour my wine, looking through a case..it seems to perfectly fit for me, which is strange. It is almost as if it was made for me..

DGS was the second game I played, being the first one my introduction to this franchise. Coming from the easily memeable Edgeworth (such a nice guy) and Manfred von Karma (he seemed more annoying than intimidating) I hit my face on the wall meeting Barok.
That theme goes nuts and you translated it awesomely into piano!

Enjoyed all of your Great Ace Attorney piano covers! I wanted to comment on this one specifically, because I love Barok van Zieks too, and his music is among the best of the entire Great Ace Attorney Chronicles soundtrack.
I've always liked to imagine that Barok probably plays his theme music on the piano in his own mansion, and it probably sounds exactly like this xD
