Bought this case after seeing it here, sadly not via Amazon as they were out of stock.
I never wanted a glass panel case or RGB, but I have to say I'm not regretting either. There is something reassuring about being able to see the fans are running and how much dust has built up, plus the default orange colour makes the front panel look like an old fashioned electric heater, which is oddly relaxing.
Also as I'm coming from an ITX case, its dropped my GPU temps by about 10C so even with the blower cooler it no longer needs "holt shit" levels of noise to keep a 2Ghz overclock on my GTX 2080.
Overall, very happy with it and the first time I've ever bought something based on seeing it on this channel.

Understanding why you use the fans included with the initial purpose for testing, it would be nice to see a comparison of the same case(s) built out with parts that an enthusiast may use. Many builders will use better fans or water cooling, disregarding stock included fans or try to brute force the air flow.

My best friend has had the 500DX for quite a few years now. He was planning his new PC I helped build and this review was one of the reason he went with the 500DX. Yes, you can pay 200+ bucks for a PC case, but if your case costs more than your RAM, at some point you've got to ask yourself what these manufacturers have been smoking. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely understand, that designing, manufacturing, marketing all can be expensive. But when you have such an amazing little case like the DX500 for 50 to 60 bucks. The RGB on this looks beautiful in person and - contrary to a lot of other manufacturers, who bloat their cases with RGB because there isn't anything actually good about the cases - looks so clean and elegant, it's almost understated. Just two strips at the front and a soft shine of light inside of the case. That's it. Just for a bit of color and aesthetic. Efficient, German engineering.
We can absolutely recommend that case. It's not just good "fOr ThE pRiCe". It's a good freaking case.

I bought this case (white version) because of this video; while transplanting all my components I kept saying "That's heckin awesome!", the modularity and spacing this case provides is awesome!
And this case is indeed living up to its name! It's very quiet. Initially I was worried about whether the top could fit two 140mm fans, thankfully - it does.
It did make me realise how much we rely on noise to tell us something is working - It's completely silent so if I am not looking at it I feel like my peripherals are plugged into fresh air. (I'm impressed by the quietness mainly because I am running a 3900x with Dark rock 4 pro tower cooler, which I was able to hear humming in my old case)

Build a new rig in this case a month ago...and after watching this review, I'm glad GN forced BeQuiet! to fix the issues with the 500, because this case is incredible.
As built, the machine keeps cool with the case's included 3 x Pure Quiet fans (rearranged to 2x front, 1 rear) and the Dark Rock Pro 4 cooler. (average CPU temps (5600x) are about 31C idle, 40 in most use, highest ever seen was 79 during a massive data xfer with 99% load). GPU (6650XT) usually runs 35C idle and up to 90C under extreme loads (most gaming is only about 45-50C though)
Needless to say, I have never heard this PC running as the fan on my xfinity modem drowns it out, not to mention other ambient noise, like AC, or felt rubbing on cotton...
Note: REMOVE THE TOP FILTER IF YOU HAVE POSITIVE PRESSURE. This helps vent more naturally from the top, passively.

Considering the consistent problems with high RAM forcing the 140 mm fan beyond the standard 165 mm height that's a biggy! It would have been something worth noting during the test.

I don't think it's counter-intuitive. The cooler the case the less work the fans need to do the quieter it is. It's trying to find that sweet spot between quietness and performance. And quiet is really very important to a lot of people for a lot of reasons. Myself for example are one of those lucky people who suffer from tinnitus. And it's reactive - meaning the louder my environment the louder it gets. So I want quiet wherever possible. However, as a lifelong gamer I also want performance and to keep my components as happy as possible - cool and dust free. I think the DX ticks all those boxes exceedingly well. Thanks for a great review as usual.

I have 3 lian li sl 120's in the front, a 240mm aio with fans in the top, and a sl 140 at the back. I think I could make it almost silent and still be fine, but I either have a 2.1 system or headphones on the whole time I use it anyway, so the added noise doesn't bother me. My gpu (ROG Strix 3060 ti) never gets above 61C, and my cpu (5600x) never exceeds 65. It's a very cool and efficient setup. But if you get a gpu with bad thermals, it will make everything in the case hotter. You don't have to get the absolute best cooler on your gpu. But don't get say an msi ventus or one of similar cooling properties. It's hard to stay quiet when your gpu fans are at 100% all the time to stay under 75C.

I definitely think it's worth noting that this case is much, much wider than the P400A Digital or NR600. It has 190mm of clearance for CPU tower coolers. Since the tallest tower coolers are in the 163-165mm tall range, that ends up being too big for the P400A.

When i watched his video showing this case in white at CES i loved the case, a quiet case, with airflow and nice design with simple LED's.....PERFECT! However he mentioned that he was sceptical about thermal performance, so i held of my excitement until the full review. I'm so glad that BeQuiet knocked it out the park with this case, its everything i wanted in a case aesthetically and noise level wise, and now with the GN backing of thermal performance there is no other case for my new build other than this! I just finished a build with this be quiet! 500DX case, and I really liked its features. This video played a key role in my purchase of it. However, there were a couple of significant points that the major reviewers (i.e. 100K+ subscribers), including this one, completely missed.
The primary point is that the USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C front panel port requires a motherboard with a USB 3.1 Key-A header. My just-released Asus TUF Gaming B550M WiFI motherboard is missing this header. Had I known about this header requirement, I would’ve gotten a different case or motherboard.
Another useful point that was missed is that control of the case’s RGB lights can be easily toggled between the motherboard and case by pressing and holding the front panel RGB button for ~6 seconds.
Fortunately, I stumbled across the "Reviewing Playing & More RPM” channel (7K subscribers) and discovered what I really needed to know about this case in the videos below. If you are considering this case, these videos are worth watching!

GN didn't miss the part regarding Type-C front panel connector. You have to connect all front panel connectors to the motherboard, Type-C is no exception. It is common knowledge. I mean, you can't connect fron Type-C connector if motherboard doesn't have appropriate port, just like you can't use Intel CPU in AMD motherboard. GN doesn't talk about common sense topics like connecting power/restart cables to the motherboard or how to install PSU either.

I got the pure base 500 over the DX purely for audio production as I was more concerned with noise. But yeah the thermals suck for gaming. I purchased some higher RPM fans and adjusted the fan curves to reflect the different in requirements for audio production and gaming (zero gpu usage vs 100% ish). When I'm browsing or recording/editing audio my pure base 500 is effectively silent, my membrane keyboard is WAY louder.

A little update on this. I got a 140mm silent wings 3 high rpm (4 pin pwm) fan for the top front slot, and I'm using the stock (3 pin, dc controlled) pure wings 2 fans in the rear and in the middle front slot. I've then got a 120 AIO in the top at the back. With the gpu and psu on zero rpm mode on light usage, you can use the solid top panel with the slots above the AIO rad, and the case is silent, filtered, and my cpu temps are around 35, gpu sits at 45 with rpm on the fans (always at 45 at idle 0 rpm).
I have the stock fans running between 600-900 rpm (6v-12v) and the silent wings 3 to match the rpm of the AIO cooler, for equal air in air out.
With the mesh top panel the temps stay the same with internet browsing/ light usage, but I haven't dared to try the solid top panel while gaming.

That's what some of us complains for years under GN reviews about cases. Also they need a proper brown noise normalizing function to show the perceived spectrum instead of the raw output of a Db meter.
At least here they finally toned down a bit their claiming about the silence of mesh cases, even if it's still subjective for them (it's not, unless a bit of audition is already lost), so maybe they are slowly thinking about improving further this methodology.

I've had this case since 2022 and I love it. It’s compact, yet not quite; it’s a bit wider than an average case to accommodate the large air coolers from Be Quiet. I was recently considering changing it, mostly for performance reasons, but this video has given me reasons to keep it. It’s a nice-looking, affordable case with good performance, it's quiet, and its interior is spacious enough for the massive GPUs available now. My only complaint is with the magnets on the top filter; the rubber quality is a bit poor, so it falls off, but it’s nothing a little super glue can’t fix.

I think the open vs. noise damping approach fundamentally comes down to a simple question: how low noise are you trying to go.
Noise damping handles *tremendously* with coil whine, and coil whine is essentially unavoidable with modern mid-range or high-end GPUs (though some GPUs are vastly worse than others). It also helps a lot with pump noise on CLCs or open-loop cooling.
However, for most people, in most situations, your fans are going to be way louder than the coil whine or pump noise anyway.
I want my PC to be inaudible over the background noise even while gaming. To do that without extreme overkill water-cooling, you need to underclock/undervolt the GPU. I have an Asus Strix 1080 running at 1450MHz core at 0.7V, which cuts the board power from ~180W stock to around 100W (it also cuts performance by about 25%).
When you take a card designed to cool 180W and run it at 100W, you can run the fans on the card really slow. You can run the case fans slow, too.
At that noise level, coil whine and the tonality of the sound are the major factors.

will you ever consider adding frequency analysis to case noise testing? one of the arguments for a silent case over an airflow focused case is that it filters out high pitched noises better; it'd be cool to see if that holds up irl. maybe an idea to get a gpu/motherboard known to make noise and test that individually

  • @mahu142

IMO the Pure Base 500 non dX is far better than presented here. Yes, the thermals may not be on top, but besides that it's the best case I've ever build a PC in. Cutouts, general alignment of mounting holes, vibrations, noise - all is top notch. And mine did cost only 60 Euros at Black Friday. Had a H440i V2 before, that was basically crap compared to the PB 500. Also build PCs in Silent Base 601, Silent Base 800, H700 and several "sub 100€" cases.
It fits a NH-D15 with no problems whatsoever. I've got mine configured with 3 Noctua NF-A12X25 as intake in the front, 1 NF-A12X25 as exhaust at the back and the two stock case fans as exhaust at the top (at zero RPM Mode, they only spin if the VRM temps are too high). On the power supply shroud I've mounted a NF-F12 blowing straight onto the GPU.

I have an overly hot running laptop running 70+ C at idle with just the desktop screen splash up. My PC box is dead, age and dust and an old graphics card (I replaced x3 times in last 4 years). The last thing my PC did was install Win 10 Pro and move the hdd volume with newe OS onto a new ssd before I attempted to update its GPU driver. The GPU never forgave me. It was the cheapest, fastest (I thought) most generic noname brand on eBay.
The PC mobo was old, the cpu was a gen 2 x86 i7, so everything was at least 10 years old. But I had never stopped to appreciate its retirement date. You might say, I just started it every day for over 10 years, ran it all day, every day, and I eventually went into sleepwalk mode - starting the comp was purely a motor reflex. In its absence, a huge chunk of my daily routine has gone awol. I became a senior citizen in its working lifetime. It was a significant stretch of time, the world outside my bubble of reality had changed greatly over the course of its passing. The PC ran my tv (tv encoder onboard), it ran my games, my Office suite, MS Project, SPSS Statistical Package for Social Sciences: Naturally I really miss the sleepwalk, it didn't remind me constantly that the bubble was fraught with realities of a greater externality in the immediate physical surrounds.
    What did I do?
I went cheap, to keep my laptop alive and keep me in the game, I bought a cooling pad from Amazon at almost $100 (delivered). When that arrived, somebody had tampered with the box and it was DOA. A nasty, flimsy, low quality thing that wasn't really a heatsink or even a big cooler fan on a pad either. With the cheapest, flimsiest On/Off crap pwr button you would'nt expect to find on a child's toy. I wasn't surprised, but I was irritated and it stang. Its cost represented what I had money to afford and I had got a box of rubbish, which cost $100. This was my first encounter with the road back onto a desktop, the value for money here does not bode well for the path now set before us.

Hah! I had that with the regular Pure Base 500 and yeah, thermals really aren't great tbh but it's still been very easy to work with. However, the DX appears to be the complete package - you get all the nice design touches of the original plus very good thermals and even some pretty understated RGB thrown in if you like that sort of thing. A few reviewers have said BQ might be releasing the front panel as an upgrade for the 500 and, based on GN's opinion alone, I'm seriously considering picking one up if they become available.

Finally a bequiet with mesh front! Thanks Steve we know we should thank you :D
I hope they will follow this path, making high end cases like this.

Bought the silent bass 500 a year ago for 50$ great case for that money, added extra fans for the top airflow is fine.

What blows my mind, is the idea that some people keep the mesh covers on top of the computer or in areas of the computer where the exhaust is. You are just making the fans work harder, whilst trapping heat. It’s like asking someone to exhale while you hold your hand over their mouth & nose. And for people that say, “It keeps dust out,”..... what dust??? It’s an exhaust area! Dust aint gettin sucked in the exhaust vents.....

Just did a build in this case yesterday, great quality and finish for the money. Running very cool with an added intake PW2, 3700x/2070S.

      How's the noise?

    • @Buffalobulltofta
      @Buffalobulltofta 4 года назад

@@wthomas1995 it is surprisingly quiet! I'd say still a fair bit quieter then your average tempered glass case. Right side panel has absorption foam but is actually louder.

The PW2's seem to run quieter than my Noctua P12's actually, if it wasn't for my stock pretty loud Wraith cooler it would be dead quiet underneath my desk.

Revisiting this review as I am building another PC using this case. Compared to the P400a on my current case, the 2020 year for mesh builds are still very good in my opinion. Can't wait to how see the thermals on the new 4090.

How'd it go? I'm debating between the FX version of this case and the Torrent Compact and Lian Li 216. Hard decisions!!

This is probably going to go down like a grenade in the comments but I’d love to see you compare the new Mac Pro case cooling using your process to give us some idea of how it’s design compares. Maybe doing that will show (or not) other ways of decreasing temps and giving Mac performance in a BYO PC

@@cc0767 Actually it can be done. If you have enough space between the front panel and the fans, you can get away with a closed front and decent cooling (see Evolve X). You can put the mesh on the sides of the front panel and if the space is big enough, the fans will have access to a lot of air. The problem with many BeQuiet cases is that the front panels are very close to the fans thus not leaving much room for side intake.

A little bit sad this case came a little too late before my rig buying, but I'm still quite happy with the Phanteks P400a_d. I think I'll recommend this to friends wanting to build. Looks soooooo nice.
