DT is the new Rush. Nerdy musicians like us are 90% of their fanbase, and they deserve a proper rabbit hole on your channel. This is a tame song from them, but a solid one to see what they are about. If you want to see how proggy they get check out their instrumental Dance of Eternity LIVE. If you want a long journey check out their songs "A Change of Seasons" or their song "Octavarium." Mind blowing! The guitarist's biggest heroes are Alex Lifeson of Rush, Steve Morse, Neil Schon, Alan Holdsworth, and Al Dimeola. The keys player Jordan Rudess went to Julliard at age 9 for classical composition. He is every bit of what you would imagine a child prodigy becoming. The more you go down the DT hole, the more you see that Jordan is one of the greatest keys players alive.

Welcome to Dream Theater, Bob! I first heard them in the 90s when MTV's Headbanger's Ball played the video for "Pull Me Under." I've seen them twice, but it's been a while. I plan to see them again on their current 40th anniversary tour. For most of that time, they've been the measuring stick that other bands are compared to. I've seen fans of Japanese bands like LOVEBITES, Galneryus, Unlucky Morpheus all say that those bands are as "talented as Dream Theater."

Dream Theater is prog metal. Yes, they all can play, lol , been at it for almost 40 years.
That drummer, is Mike Portnoy.🥁. He's one of my all time favorites, up there with RUSH's Neil Peart. This is the first song released since he rejoined the band last year after 13 years away.
Mike, guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung formed the band in 1985 at Berklee Music College. Being prog, RUSH is definitely an influence, along with YES and Pink Floyd, plus metal bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. They started out covering RUSH and Iron Maiden.
Lead singer James LaBrie came in 1991 for the 2nd album. You heard James recently, he was the first singer in the Ayreon song "The Day That The World Breaks Down". Jordan Rudess is their 3rd keyboardist , and has been with them since 1999.
Yes, Lead single from the upcoming album, their 16th, due out in Feb, it's called Parasomnia. Very much looking forward to it.
I found them when I saw the video for "Pull Me Under", from the 2nd album Images and Words, on mtv's Headbangers Ball, back when it came out in 1992. This song is reminding me of that album, and the intro for this gave me a Black Sabbath feel.
You mentioned their changes here, they do that very well. They have one instrumental song, called "The Dance of Eternity" with over 100 time signature changes, in just over 6 minutes.
If you want to check out more, suggest going back to the 2nd album, with "Metropolis Part 1" , "Under a Glass Moon" , or the above mentioned "Pull Me Under".

If you ever listen to progressive rock then you will definitely love progressive metal and Dream Theater is one of the best at it since we no longer have Rush. I have seen this band many times and finally took my youngest son to see them last year and we are going again next year to check them out. Yep Petrucci, Portnoy, Myung, and Rudess are at the top of all musicians in the rock world. Dream Theater and Lovebites are the two greatest metal bands Miyako and John Petrucci are both classical trained and both use the classic elements in their compositions. 25 albums later they can still pull off another new album called Parasomnia they also have about 15 live albums and several dedicated albums to bands they love. I have their entire collection and it never gets boring like most bands do, that's what I love about Lovebites and Dream Theater. Go all the way back to 1992 with Images and Words that's when James Le Brie joined Dream Theater and listen to Under A Glass Moon, Wait for Sleep, and Learning To Live and be ready to be blown away
