In this part, the network structure starts to truly take shape. Incorporating a very nice rack cabinet and some new cabling, I transform my network from a heap of equipment on the floor to the beginnings of a pretty decent setup.
Thanks for watching! I hope you all enjoy...

Great video tom! im glad the new house and office are treating you well. the rack looks awesome! for quieter fans i recommend noctua, cant wait for part 3! have a great weekend!
I Love the lighting in your room. So motivating to do stuff, wish I had that.
Just discovered your channel, keep up the good work, very clear camera work and narration!
Absolutely love the networking videos Tom
Great video, the setup is coming along nicely!
At 36:09 ... I have my iTunes library on my NAS too. And much like you're planning to do, I then open iTunes with 'alt' held down and select my library on the NAS. This works excellently. It's important to note though that only one mac or pc can have the library open at a time. You can still turn on Home Sharing for Apple TVs and the like
Awesome video, keep up the good work!
Even when you hadn't done the cable management it still looked better than my schools server rack their's is absolutely awful the cables are just everywhere.
+Crazy Gravy Ah, the joys of having to rush jobs and settling for "that'll do, I don't get paid enough for this shit".
+TalesOfWar haha yeah
Revision for GCSE's or IMNC... Definitely IMNC. Great video man loving the new setup ☺️🖥💻
+Toby Wells i would revise personally
You could also have a look at CEX for a Mac mini
+Tom Amey nice wish him luck from me
+PCgeek486 in my defence, I have done 5 hours revision tonight before watching the video
this is literally me right now
Have you thought about replacing the MyBook enclosures with a rackmount solution? Is that what you're planning with your NAS?
+Jack Durrant Eventually, but due to finances it'll be a slow migration progress. When the NAS is first built, it won't have enough storage to replace all of those drives straight away.
Love it when brits say bits and bobs 🤗
This is just awesome. Great content.
Liking the new server rack keep up the good work.👍
nice setup! i'd love that rack setup!
Dressed up rack looks AWESOME, well done! Liked and subscribed.
great video thoroughly enjoying your channel its teaching me a lot about networking
fantastic!!!! a real inspiration to get my own network worked out lol
This looks great!
Awesome as usual Tom.
Nice rack, Tom ;)
Yeah... that got weird lol.
When you get a new connection by the way it's common for it to do what you experienced. If it goes off it tries to update the profile until it gets a solid connection so it'll keep trying at different sync speeds until it settles. It's annoying, but kind of normal. When I got fibre in my place I had a similar situation. it was fine for a few days then stated to go flakey, then it was fine after another day or so and settled at pretty much the top speed... until my line died and I had to get a replacement lol. I'm getting exactly what I pay for now though, which is nice!
+ItsMyNaturalColour Hey Tom, I'm sorry to say, that your ethernet switch (the TL-SG1024D) doesn't support link aggregation or NIC teaming because it is unmanaged. You need to buy a managed switch ie. one that has a web interface and configure the specific ports you want to aggregate, obviously this is down the road but better finding out now than later I suppose! I recommend the netgear ones because the interface is easier to use (but by no means simple) for someone who is new to enterprise type networking stuff (e.g. me lol) Anyways great video!
52:34
pnhub1=Plus Net Hub 1 or... err... never mind
can't believe i watched the whole video without getting bored lol Very Interesting..
Lovin' that rack Tom. I need to buy something like that for my stuff.
I just built a network in a 9u rack i have a UPS in the back just one of the floor models it sits on the bottom of the rack i have a switch similar to yours and my modem is on top of that with my airport router on the base also along with a 2 bay synology (hoping to get a rack mount one soon)
i kid you not...i watch this and your other networking/rack videos atleast a couple of times a week...keep up with the good work...i recently bought the TL-ER6120 router and its excellent...price isnt terrible...would be perfect for this rack
LOL 1:25 Tells us about his old UPS that he has had for ages to end up telling us he got it last summer xD
have you considered getting a cloverleaf to IEC plug converter? then you could run the Mac Mini off the IEC distribution when you set that up meaning one less power cable
Damn Tom! That looks sweet! 8/8.
What brand/model of rack is that? I really love it!
awsome video tom love the content keep the m coming
My ipad mini (1st gen) has lots of problems with wifi. I think that could kinda explain why your ipad had bad signal with starship.
How much dose that whole setup cost (the rack network switch ect...)
Sweeeet! Nice job dude.
You should post links of the rack, the wd hard drive, the switch. I like your setup
Tom, what are the measurements of the UPS depth-wise?
What you could do, is get IP cameras, and use your mac mini or the NAS as a recording device. It saves power and money.
But my goodness that looks sweet. I'm so jealous!!!
+Mr. McSpookington Good suggestion!
hi tom what's the seller on amazon for those cables I'm in the market to revamp my entire network. that setup is looking very nice from where I'm sitting, looking forward to seeing it finished whenever that may be
You are right about plugging surge protectors and power strips into the power line adapter the instructions say to plug the strip into it instead of the adapter into the strip because surge protectors will filter out noise and slow the speed
i used to have one of those canon pixma printers, and the door on the front of them opens on its own. it has a little clip that releases when you go to print something.
The problems with your internet connection are because it is early days. Also when you switch it off because the public IP Address is on a DHCP, it takes a while to reconnect when power is returned. I notice that my router on a standard landline connection (No fancy fiber) takes around 4-5 minutes to fully reconnect to the internet.
I recommend you get some D Line trunking for all those ethernet cables across the wall, expensive, but so much neater.
What if you put some of that stick-in dock insulation on the door of the rack? How much clearance there is between the door and the rest when the doors shut?
That'd help a bit with the noise. It's not that expensive (or it was the last time I checked).
*door insulation.
You need to look up rack studs! Makes mounting stuff so much easier.
great video, where I can buy that rack? thanks
What is this server rack model? I'm looking for one. Thanks!
It Friday glad to see a other vid tom
Tom whats the Model of you cabinet i'm looking at buying one . Cheers
+FILM IT I wonder if yours will arrive on a pallet on the back of a flat bed truck? haha
+FILM IT CB wasup my brother the model number of the rack is SJB Rack
Is there version like this over in the U.S?
FILM IT VFX STUDIOS sfx
@@devinl9464 Wed all like to know...thing is nice.
Why not use the Corsair K65 for your main setup, except if you are going to sell it?
What application were you using to manage the mac mini from your other computer?
Tom, I run my iTunes libary from my server in the other room (i am corrected via powerline, so get like 7 megabytes/sec) and that is fine for movies and music, your firewire 400 should be fine :) Loving this style of videos btw
It won't work for me because I don't even have a server rack
bludclaart. the progress is gone far ta raas. very nice indeed.. subcribed from last video
Tom, I have the same problem with my BT/ Plusnet hub with the internet, all I do if the power goes out I just leave it to reconnect to the ISP and unplug my switch from it, then once it reconnects I plug my switch back in.
+Thomas Youens my hub one is stupid sometimes i have to go i to the setup and press re connect when power is lost!!! not to mention the terrible wifi and lan dropping speed all the time !
How did you reverse the glass door? I can't figure it out on mine.
Can you link me to the IEC PDU you purchased?
Great video again. Appreciate addressing my complain. But: You can't chop the ends of the patchcables and punch them into a patch panel or ethernet socket. You need a punchable ethernet cable for that and have an opposite patch panel in the rack.
& I guess 8 port is the minimum in patch panels. You could get two ethernet sockets (both having two ports) instead, they would look pretty nice as well.
& Even though I knew all the stuff you explained I enjoy listening and watching you :)
I love your videos. My server is a dell vostro 200 with a 3.01 ghz c2d running ubuntu server with samba.
I am so jealous! I want a server rack like that, but the energy requirements must be enormous! I have a simple Buffalo 4-bay NAS drive with 4 x 4TB drives in it and it consumes around 90 watts. Great for me since I cant afford those huge SSD's to put in it.. not yet anyway!
Thomas Dohlman/«DN»Lasky® what are you talking about 90 watts is nothing a hair dryer pulls over 150 and he doesn't have ssds they are hard drives and that isn't a server it's a external raid
How many u's does the rack have and where is it purchased from
What is the sever rack? Your rack look beautiful btw!
If you had one of the newer Killer network cards in your Powerhack, you could combine the WiFi and Ethernet.
nice room bro
nice job
Where did you get all the Ethernet cables from?
1 hour IMNC video 😄
Hello IMNC (sorry, not sure of your name), a few pointers with the rack and gear as the video goes on;
Put the rack on 4 feet to lift is an inch or two. Same for the top wood piece, lift it and inch and put a quiet fan in top. It will now see positive air flow.
Metal can, some sound absorption or deadening is a good idea.
Rails are best set with a ruler measuring from the front door jams. 4 inches is a good space, cables not good reference, use cable manager.
You may need to scrape the rubber feet off the switch, they foul on other gear in most cases.
Place PDU in rear facing forward in your case as you won't get to rear from rear.
Always place servers or heavy gear on rails, never hang them on rack-ear only.
I love poms who call routers ROOOOOTERS. I like the ideas of either PFSense machine, better idea, Endian Community Edition. WiFi radio in metal can not great idea.
Anyway, have fun.
why dont you build an pfsence router in a rack mountable case that would have much more power and possibilities :)
+DJJumpdancer ATX style rack cases are super expensive for some reason
+Slot1Gamer e.g. Liam Li
bpali2001 still about $300, I'm looking at Pfsense and will probably go with one of those celeron dual gigabit ethernet mini pc's, they're about $160 and draw only 10w!
the HP t5740 with a PCI-e extension + a 2 port gigabit Ethernet adapter looks like a promising thing
You don't need an ATX Case. An ITX 1u Rackmount case would be perfect or even a "router-looking" case to sit up next to his mac mini
Great video! Could you provide a link for the rack please or the name of the brand 😃
It's a ZPAS SJB rack. Hope this helps!
Tom you should try an get the dense foam sheets and line the inside of the rack as it will make the server rack quieter.
+Alberto Carrasco Good idea!
Tom, do you have a DR (Disaster Recovery) plan in place? It appears that you have a considerable amount of data and tech gear, so I would hope that you are not only insured but are also using off-site storage or cloud in case of a disaster. Perhaps you might want to review your home owners insurance for additional coverage for all of your gear. As for offsite storage you could simply store external hard drives at your parents house. Just trying to help...
Loving the look of that rack! Just a suggestion with the surveilance system, I would put it somewhere away from the rack, reason being, if someone was to break in and steak equipment, chances are they would take the DVR aswell so it would defeat the point of having it.
+MrMental6001 Good point, although locking the rack would hopefully prevent anyone from stealing things that are bolted inside. I'll have a think on this one, it's something that didn't even cross my mind!
That is gud idea
Where did you get that rack, by chance?
Give PLEX a try on the Mac Mini Server. It runs in the background and does a great job. Super easy to get up and running and you can access your media anywhere with an internet connection! I ran it on a 2009 Mac Mini no issues with 1080P to one device at a time. Les resolution the more you stream to as your Mini will be doing the transcoding. More CPU = better PLEX server experience. That said, the old Core 2 Duo perform well for their age!
The power distribution strip would be great behind the router.
What do you do as a career? I have always wanted to setup a huge home network and stuff like this but I have no reason to. I am a Software Engineer but I still have no reason for such a setup. Basically all I am asking is an excuse to make something like this xD Make Money, Meet Needs, etc?
Are the pink thinggies on the bottom of you router the antennas or feet to hold it up with out a wall mounts. Or does it do both purposes
+Peter Folchi The router has a thin design so it can fit through the letterbox, the feet spring out when you first unbox the router. The antennas are internal.
+Saajan Bains oh ok thanks for the reply
Hey Tom, if your NAS is going to be rack-mountable you may have some problems with certain cases and that rack. Because of the depth is bigger than most equipment like switches and power distribution units.
+Jorge Szabo My NAS is an ITX case, it'll sit on a rack shelf just like the mini :)
Oh okay then. Can't wait to see that build!
Love your channel and hope you the best of luck with your family and hew home.
+Jorge Szabo Thanks a lot for your comment! :)
how much energy does your system uses?
This may be a noob question but, I'll ask it anyways: how would one assess power consumption of their system?
Is there a cabinet for wireless routers?
You Should look into just buying a box of 500ft of Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable, it's not real expensive and may save you some money on running cable. Second, you should look into Furman Power Conditioners for power in the rack, they make great products and have a price range for everyone. Furman also makes UPS, although pretty pricey they are extremely nice and worthy of saving up for. Furman also has thier plugs on the back of the product, makes things look alot nicer.
Great Videos Though
Also suggest having you pink Cat wires moved in the same direction as the others for a cleaner look and I'd think having the power distribution at the top would look better and tying up all the wires at the top instead of them hanging down.
Person opinions as suggestions, either way doesnt look to bad and still have alot more of your videos to watch
What processor will use the NAS?
nice one
Is that a managed switch?
what is a roota? :D just picking, good video
Where did you get these cables from?
he rooted the cables. I route mine LOL :)
I know this comment is late but I was wondering why you didn't buy the patch cables then attach the heads to the cables. It's a fraction of the cost and you can then make them to the exact length that you want
The server cabinet looks like a fire hazard.
whats the name f the cisco router u aid u have
guess what i am getting a server rack for my house similar to yours? but mine is black!
what's the measurements on your enclosure?
very cool vid
where is the firewall????????????
Who is the manufacture of that rack closet????
Thank you
"Ages and ages ago" "Last summer" think about that for a secound ;)
And no connecting 2 ethernet cables to the adapter wont improve anything because the bottle neck in speed is the devices and internet not the cable plugged into the adapter so having multiple cables wont change anything
god dammn tom that is a sweet rack i want to buy one too
Just put OpenMediaVault on that Mac Mini and use the iTunes DAAP plugin to stream your library. ;)
