Great video JB. My 2 pence for you as follows; 1. Back of the miller is called either a 'Push Pull Hoe' or a ''Stirrup Hoe' 2. Weeds that stay and tend not to die are both Perennial Weeds and Pernicious Weeds' 3. The wolf-garden Miller is really for dry soil and does work wonders, I doubt anything would work well on sodden soil. Hang in there for spring , it's just around the corner. I haven't worked my beds since late November due to the weather, I've tried before and learned the hard way that sodden land that receives footfall soon becomes a sodden quagmire 👍
Little tip, find a local glazier as they tend to have it in stock, try not to install half the glass and wait as that’s when it’s vulnerable to wind damage…. Trust me I learnt the hard way x
Hi JB. I whole heartedly agree with Steve re the tools you need. Although I prefer the dig (I enjoy digging and find it quite cathartic) as apposed to no-dig method you still should disturb the soil as little as possible. What you have there is a hand blender for your soil. A hoe is your best friend and it is best used on a dry day with a bit of breeze and don't go too deep just enough to either drag the weeds out or separate them from their roots so they then dry out. First job on arrival, do other stuff and then rake off/pick up the drying weeds just before you finish.
I've got that tiller, you'll find that works better when the ground is not so wet, I like to use it after hand weeding or digging , gives you a nice smooth bed and it is good on spring weeds.
Big props for getting out and doing some work on a rainy day. My take on weeding completely changed when I realised that I like being at the allotment getting some fresh air and it's not that bad if you just do a little bit regularly. A bit of light hoeing and using a trowel for the fiddly bits is my method. I saw on your previous video that you were going to let the leeks grow a bit before harvesting. Of course do as you want but if you harvest what you have now the space might be better used come the spring and you won't have to deal with a glut if you start working on harvesting them now.
I have put up a large green house on my allotment. Got the greenhouse for free and stored the glass under an apple tree 🤦🏻♀️..ended up missing lots of glass. Got another free greenhouse just to harvest the glass. There are so many sights to get affordable glass, my local glazier not so much.
Productive day JB well done 👍🏻 Besides gardening is way more fun with fancy gadgets- changes things up!!! More play than actual work 😅 that tool certainly did the job. Glad you’re prepared & ready for this year. Let’s hope it’s a good one 🙏🏻☀️
Hi JB ..... the attachment you need is the amazing push-pull hoe the RFM 10 or on my allotment with wider crop spacing I’ve just bought its bigger brother the RFM 15. (I use the 10 at home in my smaller beds now). First time I used it I was blown away as I used to use the EXACT type of old fashioned hoe you show in that video. As far as I’am concerned the Tiller as I call it is only used on dry clumpy clayish soil to too break up the surface lumps into a fine tilth while lifting up the soil underneath at the same time. It’s a bit of a niche product that I’d use to finely tilth the soil before broadcasting seed. Also it’s pretty impossible to use between and around crops..... not so with the RFM 10, that’s amazing. Love the potty mouth club every week.
Hey JB! New subscriber here. Love your general outlook on allotment work. We've just taken on our first allotment and so have been putting in the time to get it prepped for the growing season. I've just bought an oscillating hoe which looks like the part of the wolfgarten tool you refer to as a back hoe. Haven't had chance to use it yet but plenty of others rate them apparently. Keep up the awesome work 👍👍
I bought a similar soil tiller from one of the cheaper supermarket middle aisle and it doesn't have the hoe on it. I found it was rubbish and a lot of hard work even though our soil in the raised beds is really good. I have a three pronged claw like Steve has and to be honest I find that one of the best tools going, I use it for weeding and soil prep before putting seeds directly into the ground, it fluffs up the soil and takes away any compaction and also loosens the weeds which I can then pick up. Mine isn't as big as Steve's, I inherited it and I think it is a homemade job, but it works brilliantly.
I've never seen such a tool before. We have been using very traditional tools for weeding and soil preparation. Would be interesting to stop at a shop selling gardening tools and investigate a bit what is sold nowadays 😃
well done, I had a rotovator once, people raved about, but it doesn't work on clay, too heavy and clingy soil. yours might work better when dry, they say to weed only on dry days, but you gotta do the work when you can ;-) after a chaotic an stressful day at the office I loved coming to the allotment and just sit on my knees picking weeds out, cos those taproots keep coming back.invasive weeds (is that what you where trying to come up with) like couch grass and bindweed or that morning glory stuff will cheer on being hacked into small bits by that rotovator thing cos every bit will regrow, bane of my gardning life. sadly I can't sit on the ground or my knees anymore but I do most weeding still by had, bending down, great for your hamstrings ;-) haha..well done it's nice to start with a clean garden cos you feel on top of things instead of behind
Yes I'll definitely keep an eye out! Having three separate sizes to fit will make it a little awkward - I can also do a bit of asking around the plot as I bet people have spares tucked away in sheds.
JB Great video. Base of the greenhouse you have done has giving me ideas with my greenhouse and is hoping my hubby will help with it so redo all the base cause that what happened to ours it sank on back as don't think he did foundation well.
I always enjoy your videos, JB! I think part of the problem with the new super hoe that your ground was so wet. I'd love to see what it can do in drier soils.
Happy new year to you as well! And who knew there were that many steps involved in putting up a greenhouse haha. Well you I guess since you already have one 🤪 It was all news to me though. And fixing the compost bays sounds like 7 steps process! Hope it all works out well 👍
I tried a neighbours Wolfgarten Miller was great on empty beds but as you said pretty useless when crops growing in the beds you have little or no control with it and can ruin crops
Hi JB, Happy New Year to you too 🎉 itsca great tool for your weeding & your soil too. It may be the raining is hindering your progress. Dont let Tony & Steve pick on you about your greenhouse on Monday 🤣 great video update, thanks for sharing and take care 🙂
Happy new year JB!! Hope it is filled with nothing but nice things! I've been recovering from eye surgery for a month now, however I have still been watching you albeit with one eye haha! The worse bit is not being able to get out into the garden but sure it won't be long. Brilliant video as usual...your enthusiasm is the breath of fresh air that I needed! x
Just subscribed as this channel is very engaging and your delivery is just right JB 👏keep up the good work on both the channel and the allotment, I work all over the country so hopefully I will be in your area one day and able to see all your progress in person - best wishes, Joel
Ahh no way!! Thank you so much Joel. Really appreciate that. You'd always be welcome to pop in and give me a few tips / harass me for still not having an allotment pond 😅
Happy new year. I was just wondering how good the tool you used in the video and I’m convinced that it is not what I was expecting thanks for the info and demo
Happy new year JB! I too am feeling quite good about the coming growing season. I just completed my first year on my new plot and wasn't very organised, but I did spend the majority of spring getting it sorted before planting. This year though I have a plan drawn out and most of my seeds ordered, and using my Google calendar to remind me when to sow/harvest etc 🥰 here's to a good 2023!
Ahh lovely to hear! I've never been completely organised, but little and often is definitely the best way. I try and do at least one gardening related job every day now, even if it's just a five minute one, just because it keeps your head in the game. Good luck for 2023!
New tool, I would find it to heavy and awkward to manoeuvre. Looks the job though. Full marks for the greenhouse prep. I should be out in the garden sorting but the grey drizzle is getting the better of me today.🤔
It'll be the best greenhouse in the south, when its finished...Steve...🤣🤣😂😂
Rome wasn't built in a day Steve 😂

Im sure the base will be fine as long as the mud locks those stones the bricks wont sink JB
Cheers Tony! Reassuring to hear!

Thanks Pam! I have one that I always use who is local, there's just been a lot of supply issues the past few years!

The tool isn't a hoe it's a soil mill . It's more fir use as a hand tiller to break soil ready for planting

My greenhouse is staked to the floor. I hammered four in each corner. It’s never budged
I like your videos. I think the tool is more for tilling after weeding. Getting it ready for seed sowing etc. Good Luck.

The Wolf Garten tiller is awesome, I would'nt be without mine.
it's not designed for weeding
People used mud and stones for ages and ages, im sure it will hold
Productive day JB well done 👍🏻

Yes so much weeding to do now!! I’m shocked!
The garden looks better and better. I went back to a very early video, and this one shows how much you’ve done. 🇨🇦👍🥰
Ahh thank you Frances! I really enjoy going back from time to time - it's a great way to see all those little changes add up over time.

My soil is clay too, the WG tiller goes through it even when it's bone dry.
You could go on to Freecycle and get the glass
. I did all of my greenhouse that way.

Great video JB. I like the wolfgaten tool you have. Bet it would make a lovely seed bed.

That looks like a tool and a half! I think it will do better when the soil is dry
100%!
I wonder if the miller would be better for bed preparation at the start of the season when the beds are empty?
Yes I think you're exactly correct! Brilliant for large areas when it's a bit drier!
Just wondering if you still use the soil miller? 😊💚
Yes it's absolutely brilliant!! It was just far too wet on this day!
