I am not religious but I do realize the importance of religion in many peoples lives. There are important lessons in many of the religions. It is one of our repositories of past knowledge and wisdom!
Wow! From New Zealand and after listening to you both, I am also, "cautiously optimistic", now. I needed to hear this after so many years of absolute shite from our Government and MSM. Thank you.
18:00 I typically agree with Dave on most points, but the idea that "the state's biggest competition is the [...] church" completely ignores Shiism in Islam, which believes that religious leaders are fundamentally totalitarian political leaders, thus the "church" is synonymous with the "state". Case in point: Modern day Iran. Or look at pretty much the entire Middle Ages in Europe, where the Papacy was a theocratic state to which nearly all European monarchs swore fealty. And the tyranny that resulted from that is what gave birth to the modern secular liberalism movements (France, for example), not WWII. In fact, the Cold War following WWII lead to a massive resurgence in state-dictated religiosity, as the "evil commies are atheist, and capitalist 'Murica is Christian!" Atheism isn't what makes communism evil... It's conformist collectivism, which is something most major religions also espouse. So, sure, a community church/temple/masque is excellent. All for small communities with common beliefs joining together, especially for common peaceful religious purposes. However, just like any other group of people, giving it authority over all people is just another form of statism called a theocracy.
@@Mortiel I completely agree. The Protestant states became somewhat similar to today's Saudi Arabia with a king as commander-in-chief and the state church controlling the population. Many of the people from Sweden who moved to the US were deported because they went to the wrong Protestant church. Only after the Second World War could one work for the state without being a member of the state church. Sweden had then been a democratic hellhole for three decades. The Church existed in the Soviet Union and the worst German speaker in history, Merkel, was a member of the Christian Democrats in East Germany. So to say that totalitarian states oppress or want to get rid of the church/religion is completely historically wrong. After all, God told Bush in a dream that the US would invade Iraq, and the believers had no problem sending their children to die and kill civilians in a country they can't find on a map.
I don't think it's meant to be a universal historical principle. It's just an observation about modernity. Churches were a center of resistance against the Jacobins and the Nazis and the soviets. They have their own set of ideals that often conflict or at least compete with the agenda of the modern secular state, and they create divided loyalty from the state's point of view. I agree that there have been plenty of historical episodes where the church acted as a state or worked with the state, but I don't think the European Middle ages works as an example. In fact, I think it's contrary evidence. There was constant friction and power struggles between the monarchs and the Papacy in medieval Europe, and the papacy did indeed act as a constraint on the power and desires of European monarchs. They swore fealty to the pope for the same reason our modern politicians swear fealty to Israel - because it represents an independent power interest that political leaders have to contend with when pursuing their agenda.

What brings you both optimism is exactly what terrifies and frustrates the establishment and they take it very seriously. ‘The widespread dissemination of misinformation online’ as they see it, is a threat because it weakens trust in gov and its institutions and with the new Cold War raging parallel to this media shift, it means holding onto our new found strength will be a serious struggle. One way for gov’s to address this issue is with greater transparency and honesty, however because of the simultaneously growing geopolitical struggle, governments are more likely to consider it an unsustainable internal threat and double down efforts to control it.
