Princess Diana interview: BBC covered up ‘deceitful behaviour’ of journalist Martin Bashir

  • Princess Diana's brother Earl Spencer says he draws a line between the Panorama interview and his sister's death in Paris. Her jaw-dropping revelations had been watched the world over.
Panorama reporter Martin Bashir won numerous awards for his 1995 scoop, which the BBC has started to return. But he had secured the interview after faking bank statements to suggest royal insiders were betraying Diana to the tabloids. According to the inquiry report when questions were raised, the BBC top brass believed Mr Bashir's lies in an internal investigation damned today as "woefully inadequate".

The faked up documents were not just "stupid", they were likely criminal and cruel. Can't imagine what went through Princess Di's mind when she saw those documents - it must have seemed as though she was being betrayed at every turn. Really awful stuff this. Kudos to William for addressing this effectively.

Yep. There is no doubt in my mind, that Princess Diana was assassinated. Princess Diana was under suveillance by the NSA and MI6 from 1992. NSA admitted in 1998 to have over 1349 documents, relating to Princess Diana´s death!! If these documents are innocous, then why cant they be released? THESE are the questions Prince William should be asking. Authorities at the Palais de Justice in the French capital - where the documents on your mother Princess Diana are locked in a basement archive and guarded by armed cops - are using “article L. 213-2” of their “heritage code” to prohibit access. In application of article L213-2 of the french heritage code, the documents (file) cannot be consulted before the expiration of a period of 75 years. WHAT is justification for using an obscure rule to lock away the Diana evidence file, for 75 years? Have you heard of the Warren Commission? The Diana file will be kept secret until 2082 at the earliest. The french authorities will have the power to review whether to release the file at that time, meaning it may never be seen in full by the public. In 2007, French authorities bizarrely claimed they had lost the 6,000-page file. They said it had been misplaced just weeks ahead of the £12.5million inquest into Diana’s death held in Britain, that lasted from 2007 to 2008. If there is nothing to cover up, then why is there a coverup? Is BBC part of the coverup? Maybe. Did BBC co-operate with MI6? Maybe. Did Martin Bashir act irreponsible? Certainly. Should BBC have stopped him? If they were aware of criminal conduct, definately. But the real interesting questions are: Why have the NSA and the French Authorities not released the documents? Why has the Queen put a ban on the documents for a 100 years? I think Prince William knows, that his mother was assassinated, and I think he knows who approved it.

fan. He then went away and stabbed Jackson in the back, as far, and as fast as He could. I don't know about Diana, but lies and betrayal seem to
be Bashir's trade mark... Also doesn't the BBC always seem to fund, support and protect all the nastiest and most evil people: Savile, Sweeney, Bashir etc

OK. I'll try to explain, sorry I'm not that good with words.....
Imagine you know your husband, the man you fell in love with, has no time for you because he's in love with someone else and has been all along. His family appear to tolerate/support this and you are side-lined, cold-shouldered. You try to get along with your very public life as best as you can. You are so famous that everything you do, every action you take, every bit of your behaviour, is under world-wide scrutiny. But you do your best to withstand the pressure, behaving with dignity and you take your duties seriously and work hard. You feel so unwelcome within the innermost royal circle that you become slightly paranoid about it. It's horrible to have to spend time with people who you feel don't like you very much! You have affairs as an escape and because otherwise, there is no intimacy in your life at all.
Then one day you're presented with papers that appear to prove that there really are dark forces working against you -- evidence! People you know well are apparently being paid to speak against you and possibly even to harm you.
The man who shows you these falsified, fabricated papers also offers you the opportunity to tell your side of things in a TV interview.
Naturally this flushes out every pent-up emotion you have.
On the back of this Bashir becomes something of a journalistic worldwide hero ---- laughing all the way to the bank. While you feel utterly destroyed by the fall-out.
What a despicable trick he has played on you. Imagine.
What's more, you die before ever finding out the truth.

Soo true. Diana knew her marriage to Charles was a faults and over way before she did that interview when she was separated from him. However, it wasn't her fault she'd been manipulated by Martin Bashir to revealed her deep dark secrets and her real feelings in the interview. These things happened in life.

Heartbreaking for prince William to found this. Princess Diana was a younger woman full of fears for being betrayed by her husband. The truth always will come to those evil liars.

If the BBC got hold of a story like this we’d never hear the last of it so why aren’t they being held into account? Apologies are not enough. It’s criminal.

Michael Grade's comments are spot on. Bashir deserves all the ignomy and contempt that comes his way, but the senior executives who covrred up his malpractice deserve worse. However, the same self-righteous arrogance still permates the organisation and most of its journalist's today. The sooner the licence fee goes the better.

It will be interesting to see how the tabloids cover this bearing in mind the Leveson Inquiry revelations.
Rightly so that the BBC should be held to account for this but if had been a private, commercial broadcaster would there have been this level of public scrutiny?

Make no mistake that while media certainly did wrong, and had a role in Diana’s demise, the responsibility for Diana’s safety lay entirely with her husband, Prince Charles and the Royal family. Had he been a man instead of a spineless weakling, and taken care of his wife, she would most likely be alive today. We shouldn’t lose track of this fact.

Absolutely. Princess Diana was under suveillance by the NSA and MI6 from 1992. NSA admitted in 1998 to have over 1349 documents, relating to Princess Diana´s death!! If these documents are innocous, then why cant they be released? THESE are the questions Prince William should be asking. Authorities at the Palais de Justice in the French capital - where the documents on Princess Diana are locked in a basement archive and guarded by armed cops - are using “article L. 213-2” of their “heritage code” to prohibit access. In application of article L213-2 of the french heritage code, the documents (file) cannot be consulted before the expiration of a period of 75 years. WHAT is the justification for using an obscure rule to lock away the Diana evidence file, for 75 years? The Diana file will be kept secret until 2082 at the earliest. The french authorities will have the power to review whether to release the file at that time, meaning it may never be seen in full by the public. In 2007, French authorities bizarrely claimed they had lost the 6,000-page file. They said it had been misplaced just weeks ahead of the £12.5million inquest into Diana’s death held in Britain, that lasted from 2007 to 2008. If there is nothing to cover up, then why is there a coverup? Is BBC part of the coverup? Why has the Queen put a ban on the documents for a 100 years? I think Prince William knows, that his mother was assassinated, and I think he knows who approved it.

Princess Diana was hurting and did that interview to let the world know what she was feeling. Blame Bircher if you want , who should be blamed his her cheating husband. When women are in a bad marriage it helps to talk about it. Princess Diana did what she did to release herself from an unhappy, miserable marriage. It worked !
