I've played guitar for 16 years, this was my first practice amp and I still use it. It's a great amp,
It was there in the studio so what the heck. It did the job. Thanks for the comment.
Can you play heavy metal with this amp?:) or does it only play like «calm»
best video of this amp on youtube. Thanks John.
Back when amp reviewers used to know everyting about the amp and try out every feature in their reviews
Great review John - I'm thinking of getting one of these for playing Jazz, and your demo showed me I'm going in the right direction!
Beautiful, very relaxed playing. An excellent overview of the amp.
this was the most helpful review i have ever seen.
Dang I got one of these new around the same time this video was published . . . I didn't even know what RUclips was back then. Still have the amp, love it and use it all the time and even mic it up to a PA, I love doubling the amp's delay with the mixer's delay. This amp is loud and versatile, vibrates the walls of a 4000 sq ft house and has cool gain settings.
I've been looking to try one of these Cubes for a while now. I've had a JC-120 for 20 years now and am very happy with it. Its hard to beat the clean sounds from Roland amps.
Thanks for going through all the options in this amp.I recently picked one up for $75 and its more than enough for my small apartment.Had a new Fender Champ 20 just prior and to my ear the difference is huge, night and day, very happy with this amp.
Hey there, I dont usually comment on videos but, man, I just have to tell you this. I already have bought that amp as my first amp and ran across your video today and I have to give it to you. You did a really really great job on this one. Thanks alot on my behalf and on behalf of all those who will go out and buy it after watching this review and deffo will not be disappointed.
Gr8 riffs there too!
John, Thanks for a nice demo of the amp. You put it through it's paces and this demo should be very valuable for anyone considering purchasing Roland Cube 30. Kudos!
I'm going to get one of these I love the clean tones.
I played through one of these at a guitar shop whilst trying out a guitar and was impressed with the sound of it. If i needed another amp, i'd get one of these. Nice review m8, 5 stars!!
just bought this amp used... turns out, pluging a pod in the aux input gave me the best sound my pod ever had.... it doesnt color the sound of the pod at all.... plus, the jazz chorus sim of this amp is just perfect, amazing clean sound.... not to mention this is the loudest solid state 30w amp I've ever played in my life...amazing amp
Great little amp for specific purposes.. bought mine 14-15 years ago, still have it.
This was a very good demo. The guy plays very well and I must say that he surprosed me with his metal lick. Great review of a great product!
Excellent review. Well done.
John, great overview...Thank you.
Thanks for this great review!
Very good Demo & Explanation for Beginners and also Semi
A friend of mine got one when they first came out and I was pretty impressed, especially for the price. I used it as a test amp at my workbench for quite a while and then found myself using it for practicing and low-volume gigs. It's easy to move around, there are no tubes to warm up, you just plug in and go.
I use it mainly for clean and early breakup tones and it does that well. The two models I use most are the Brit Combo, which has a midrange bump and breaks up very late and the Tweed which has fairly neutral high end and a noticeable bass boost. The Brit can nail the Polytone sound which is mainly what I use it for. The Tweed breaks up a lot sooner and like the real thing you can ride the line between clean and dirty by touch. You can go from big warm jazz to biting overdriven blues with minimal effort. I find it to be the most versatile of the bunch.
The Jazz Chorus model is terribly scooped with booming bass and glassy highs. The real JCs are a bit scooped but not nearly that much. The digital aspect really comes out in the Acoustic and various Stack models. The reverb is okay if it you don't go past halfway. The delay and tremolo are passable.
The CUBE 30 doesn't have the volume to hang with a hard-hitting drummer but at 30 solid-state watts it's hardly surprising. The only thing that really bugs me about this amp is the fact that it has what seems to be a noise gate in the input stage. When you're playing very low you can hear the gate opening and it's like every note has to pass through a veil before it blooms. This isn't noticeable at higher volumes but at the volumes you might use for practicing or recording, it might be an issue. Great price, though!
Such a great review! Thank you.
Good review and sweet guitar
These amps have an amazing tight sound... the clean is nice & all the lead channel options sound great.. It can definitely push out some volume too
Thank you for the revievv
This is amp is awesome!
Good question. It's a good idea to use an angled or L jack to avoid damaging the guitar because the input jack is on the face of these 335s. If you bump into something it can crack the wood. Thanks
Great review. Thanks.
Glad you liked it! Thanks John...
It's definitely loud enough to play concerts with, my guitar tutor and I have played several gigs with one.
i am gonna buy this
so exited
i got it awhile back.. its sooo amazing.. one of the best guitars for me to practice with.. ive been playing for 5 months now.. and it really helps increase... your playing ability.. itsl like 350 .. at the max.. consider the 60
get it immiediatly
Great review, very informative! Looks like the perfect amp for me, Thanks,
I've been using this for 5 years now, great little amp, perfect for bedroom practicing!
Compact enough but you still get a LOT of different sounds out of it without any hassle. Great amp for beginners and even average-good players.
One thing I don't like is the steep volume transition on the lead channel: not much space between "silent" and "just a bit too loud".
Good review John
Yes. There's silent then you turn the dial as slowly as you can because you want the lowest volume possible (like you might when your property has poor sound insulation and you want your neighbours to hear it as little as possible) and then the sound comes on and It's not as minimal as you imagine. [Not a complaint though, just an observation, an amp can't be perfect in all ways in all situations to all people]. It's a good amp.
GREAT friggin review! I just bought a fender blues jr and love it but im also tempted to pick up the cube as its alot more portable!
Great demo! Your awesome🙌
my cube 30 roland its been my friend since 2003 ive never had any trouble with it .it is great for practice i remember back then i paid about 300 bucks for it ,this was the first amp i ve ever purchased by my own hands with hours of effort ,im going to get a half stack amp still debating between marshall or randall, but this amp the cube 30 its going to stay forever there.it is a eternal amp and you and yr friends pretty much have a great time
Nice to have effects on a little amp like that to play around and find sounds you may want to explore. This amp also seems affordable enough. Having pedal effects still makes more sense so you can switch sounds while playing a tune.
I own one of these and love it....Bought it used for 100 since the Clean channel dosent work, but the 2nd channel with the effects and amp simulators give me most of the sound combinations I need. I use a Zoom G2 pedal for other effects.
I recommend it over similar sized and priced amps like
the Line 6 and Peavey Vyper
Love your demo and got this amp thank you Aloha...
just bought this amp...awesome !
Nice review...... I got one for my son and he likes it
Great amp, just got one second hand, really different sounds, and the eq and the low end are amazingly chunky and powerfull.
Thansk for the review
That was my first amp. It's beast.
Good review thank you 🙏
Muchas gracias por análisis del ampli.
great review great amp
Had this amp for years...best practice amp ever made. But I never put the gain over 5 (12 oclock). It has a great setting that I never used, and then I discovered it, the "Dyna" settign, that is very sensitive toplaying, or guitar vlume, and you can go from clean to distortion from the guitar volume and your pick attack.
THe Rectifier sound is great at low volume, and the one before it, the "Metal" setting, is a GREAT digital distortion.
The built in effects include Roland Chorus, (legendary), but a little more control over the delay would have been nice.
Best practice amp ever.
What is the dyna setting ?
got this one, it kicks ass
I have this amp and am happy with it. Plenty of power for inside the house. I keep mine on about 3 out of 10. I made my own footswitch with a bit of wire, stereo plug (since there are 2 switches) and 2 doorbell buttons (cheap) screwed to a piece of wood. It looks ghetto but works fine and is way cheaper than the Roland switch. Rock on.
Great review, John!
good choice!!
I've been playing one of these for 4 years and NEVER had any problems with it!
you can definately get some volume out of it :p
nice clean channel, very versatile lead channel and a few cool effects :)
you're right about the amp, man. i have one of these and it's a very versatile one for beginning guitar players, the only thing i don't like about it is that it sometimes makes sounds like some parts are exploding mixed with a lot of fuzz or something
i own both and what you say is true. the marshall is very straightforward and looks good but the roland i think is much fun to experiment with, especially if you're new to effects.
If you turn on your amp with the tone knobs off and you get no sound it's called active tone controls which are much more versatile than passive tone controls which roll off their frequencies to ground. each section of active tone controls actually contain their own pre-amps. that little amp sound pretty good.
I highly recommend this amp for a beginner or for practice. The modeling and effects are great for newbies to experiment and 'find their own style.
You cannot jam with a full drum kit with it as you will get buried.
I wish I could effect life as brilliantly has he did.
nice sound
Excellent
Got one. This little guy kicks ass, much more so than ya might expect! I bought it after taking a long, hard look at all the others.
I installed a speaker output and power a Marshall quad box with it. Sounds huge and really versatile.
@@johnhguitar I installed a speaker out on mine, too. Just don't have a quad to plug it into!
Maaan!!! U rock!!!
Sometimes I watch this guys videos just to hear him play. I like his style.
I had my original Cube 30 burn up in a fire in my breezeway, and immediately replaced it with a Cube 30x. The only difference is the dyna amp (which is kind of cool) and the tuner which is awesome.
This amp is chock full of pretty much any tone you'd want to get for fusion jazz, rock, blues, etc. I use it for big gigs and just mic it or run it from recording out into the board.
I liked it so much I got the Micro Cube (which is super awesome) and the Bass Cube 30.
Great Amp!
i was thinking over to buy it
but now i saw this vid i'm sure of it!
I'm a tube snob with beyond my share of professional gear but own both the Cube 30 and 60 for practice and grab-n-go amps.
i have the 60! Amazing sound...
I feel the best he sounded was when he was playing an old Gibson ES 175 and I think he was using a pair of Acoustic amps in stereo. I could be wrong but that's what it looked like from the seats at the Roxy in Hollywood.
Good review man, Is a good amp for the BOSS GT-10?
thanks for your great review, but I wish you could spent more time with the amp modeling function of this cube.
lesterr96 it's just a standard 12 bar blues but you might recognise it from many ACDC riffs, but it's incredibly popular
i had one of these i had it hooked up to my 120 watt marshall or my 80 ashton amp when i was playing..i never used it for practice i had it cause of the distortion effects.but i sorta uh blew it up playing whole lotta love.the feedback fucked it up but it was still a good amp id recomend for practice but go for a 60 if u play in small venues.i got an effects pedal now with bttr distortion effects
i have done some gigs with this amp, its not ideal but it can do the trick , allthough i liked to amplify it trough the head speakers through an external mic.
Boss has just come out with a new reverb pedal with a vintage sound. I can't say it's the best but you should check out a few before making a decision.
@UndeadProjekt I Got one and it does to an extent. I never had to turn up over halfway with a live drummer.
Either Line 6 Spider or Roland Cube. I am more in favor for Roland Cubes though. I have had Cube 30, 60 and now have Cube 80, and I am in love with them. The Cube 80 (and maybe 60) you can connect to a 4x12" stack if you want too.
Спасибо вам 🎉
i got this amp too...it's good
Thx for the review nice guitars the one i like is The Gibson SG :D Im planning to buy this one
The tone of this guitar is so nice. Good for jazz. What kind of jack do you use. Is that a monster cable(funk/rock or jazz)??
Hi Excellent review! do you think that this amp is enough for small gig ?(drum/singer/keybord/guitar)
Great demo. Just got this amp for 50 bucks. I'm loving it!
How did you get this for $50?
***** Used. Through the local gumtree website. Best buy ever for me!
Freo Guitar Hah same! just came back from picking up the amp for $85aud from gumtree. Great amp, 'specially for the money.
Me too the 30X a few bucks more. But I have nice Tube amps, but love this little monster. Well done Roland.
Just got mine for £30
@giiann The song is Doobie Brothers - Listen to the music (1972)
i got the 30 thanks man:D
@UndeadProjekt Probably dude i had a crate 30 watt solid state and it went over a little drum set at around halfway on the volume control!! although i doubt your still wondering
The 30 stands for 30 watts. Go to the Roland website for equipment details.
cheers...luckily i got to get my hands on the piggyback today, and have postponed my plans...
so as of now, i am going to buy a decent processor...
It might be OK for a practice but it depends on how loud you need it. I've done a few small jazz gigs with it but never a blues or rock show.
the first amp i ever "had" was one i borrowed from some friends, a marshall mgcd10 you can pick one up new for about 90 bucks or cheaper used its an ok but its just not plug and play, you have to sit down and find out what works. now i have a crate flexwave 65w that has a few effects, delay reverb and a mod dial great distortion and is EXTREMELY LOUD
Lol, I was about to sing the verse of Listen to the Music when you started playing the Doobies. THanks for this vid, i'll consider the Roland Cube 30 cuz I need to buy a starter amp.
it is a great amp...I have the cube 30....but if you can step up to the cube 60...it is awesome with an speaker ext. outlet.
John, great overview of the amp. I know you hit on the Blues sound a bit, but can you, with your experience, help me out with the settings that would bring me close to Claptons sound? I realize there so much more involved, pickups, pedals..... but I've been tinkering and just can't seem to dial in to something close to his sound. Michael
How much do you want to spend? How loud does it have to be? What's your favorite music? Go for the most practical amp that covers the bases. Don't get a
stack if you're just going to play in the bedroom..Thanks, John
i have this amp. it's the best.
I got the Cube 60 ^^
I think the overdrive preamp runs through digital chips for its amp modeling and perhaps the clean channel is independent and just a solid state preamp without the JC Roland chip. Anybody done the research?
Hi thx for this review very useful and I'm gonna buy that amp (have also a ES335), but what kind of chord do you play at 4:27 ? --> rockabilly end chord sounds nice ..
yea it is
Nice amp for everything :-) , Maybe not your main amp but this 30-X is even the best non-tube bluesharp-amp too... You find them for peanuts on the net everywhere
I just perfer my 2 channell half stack with my PRS gold top McCarty through my Vox Tonelab. I've never heard a more perfect sound, but i actually have this amp in my garage and whenever i wanna try something and i don't wanna hook my rig up i use my roland, perfect for song writting and new ideas
No lie man, I'm in the same situation. At first it was just the Line 6 Spider IV Vs the Peavey Vypyr. Later found out about the mustang, and now the cube 30.
I bought one of these for practice. I love the JC Clean but any of the modeling stuff sounds highly compressed.
+rsaathoff It's a good practice amp and that's what I use it for...nothing more really. Thanks for the comment.
I have one of these and I find the way to go is to use the "Black Panel" which pretty much models a Fender Twin/Super Reverb. This is the only channel which is not super-compressed and gives you some head room and sounds very close to a clean fender tone. I put my pedals in front so I can crank the volume up and down with overdrive and distortion and boost. I have the following chain:
guitar->OD-3->SoulFood->GE-7->Rat->Malekko-616->Cube30
The OD-3 is usually on all the time for the overdrive then I use the others for taste it works really well and gets a great tone.
