The problem is simple: people assumed that ENERGY would become accessible (e.g. flying cars, automatic sidewalks, walking robots).
What they never imagined, though, is that what would become highly accessible would be INFORMATION. No one ever imagined you would be carrying in your pocket pretty much all the answers you'd like to know on a regular day.
The internet is one of the most amazing human inventions and we hardly realize it.
Energy has become accessible. Hundred of millions of Chinese didn't exit poverty thanks to information but thanks to coal.

1:53 I'd say the average American makes way above $300K per year nowadays (nominal $60K), when comparing to products of the same technological level.
The problem with many predictions in the past is that they didn't assume prices of non-real-estate products would come down relative to inflation. Instead, the implied prices would stay the same while wages go up. That has turned out to not be the case.
For example, no one in the mid-20th-century imagined we'd all be driving electronic-fuel-injected cars, let alone hybrid Priuses and battery electric vehicles. In fact, the price of an EFI car is cheaper today relative to inflation than a 1960s car. That's why almost every adult owns a car today, versus almost every household owning just one car.
EFI cars, if they had existed back then, would have costed over $150K in 2020 dollars, or 19K in 1965 dollars. Whereas, today, you can pick up a brand-new 2020 Nissan Versa or 2020 Mitsubishi Mirage standard with extremely low emissions (in 1960s standards), high torque and horsepower (in 1960s standards), great gas mileage, comfy rides, sun visors, wireless key fobs, start-stop systems, power locks, power windows, power mirrors, power steering, power brakes, cigarette lighters, seatbelts, crumple zones, airbags all around, high-definition radio with surround sound, infotainment system, climate control, antilock brake system, electronic stability control, disc brakes, backup cameras, USB ports, and Bluetooth to connect with phone, all of which add up to a lot of money (these cars are the cheapest most-spartan ones sold today, but were unimaginably advanced in the 1960s) for $12K, equivalent to just $1.5K in 1965.
Heck, even sun visors, cabin heating, air conditioning, power locks, power mirrors, cigarette lighters, disc brakes, power steering, power brakes, antilock brakes, and dual driver and passenger airbags were not standard in the 1960s, all of which we were already taking for granted back in the 90s.
Money is a totally made-up thing by man. Money is only what you make of it.
GustavTheRailwayGun most people in America struggle with rent and food and they have a lot of unaddressed health issues due to cost. Having an iPhone and laptop doesn’t change that we’re worse off than the 60’s.
@@HydratedBeans you LITERALLY have a device in your pocket that can retrieve almost all of the worlds information. We would probably have a much greater presence in space if NASA's funding wasn't cut when it was.
One question: do we even need sentient humanoid robots ?
Why do they have to be humanoid? That's the question.
Yea, let's produce something that will open up a whole barrel of new moral dilemmas to work out, we don't have enough of that today.
Back in the '70s (when I was growing up), we never thought to ask the question "who gets the money?" Similarly, AI is a threat not because machines are evil but because they will be controlled and programmed by sociopathic corporations.
Well , at least the AI will be surrounded by like minded beings. I doubt any AI is going to have compassion and empathy as we define them. I think if we should ever confront one it would best to be done with pure logic and self interest in the forefront of the conversation.
We probably could have made it to Jupiter by now if NASA stayed as dedicated to exploration as it was in the space race. In just ten years we went from the first Satellites in orbit to Moon missions. In another twenty they could have likely made it to Mars, in another twenty the asteroid belt, and in another twenty or thirty Jupiter's moons.
In today's world. Working is linked to living. it would be awesome if in the future the only purpose of humanity is to enjoy its life

It's crazy that 2020 was 4 years ago, feels unreal
2020 through 2024 just feels like one big year to me.
It's gonna be 5 yrs soon.
Mild disagreement we are worse off today than in 1960. Most economists say that its not even close, we are better. Incomes are up over 50%, and improvements in technology and healthcare mean we are more prosperous than ever. Wages went up 5% this past year alone. The caveat is that 1) well paying jobs requiring only high school (no technical training or college - assembly line stuff) are gone; and 2) people in surveys who say we are worse off today largely confuse economics with social changes and uncertainty.
I would add that college cost is insane, created by administrative bloat, a need for some sort of post HS training to earn a wage, and a college loan system that allows these colleges to jack prices up unlimited amounts.
Actually, comparing average family income and accounting for inflation alone, the actual increase in income is only about $2000, for nearly 60 years, thats nothing
@@kiwi4998 No, that number counts inflation - and it doesn't count things like technology becoming cheaper over time. Inflation alone from 1960-today is >800%
@@kd8opi Technology got cheaper, not everything gets cheaper overtime, it is more expensive to be alive today than it was in the 1960s by the cost of living. Housing increased, Education increased, basic food has increased.
@@kiwi4998 Still, better off today than in 1960. Food in particular is cheaper, which is why we have obesity crises in poor communities. Housing is about the same except in America except on the west coast and north east. You can by a new home in Texas for $100-200K easy.
I agree with you on education. It is out of control. In the US, its secondary to limitless student loans (allowing universities to price gouge), and insane numbers of administrators. I know people who make >$300K per year (before taxes) who cant afford to send their kids to anything but a state school lest it destroy their retirement.
@@kd8opi food is not cheaper, it simply has more additives and sugar, it cost 0.23 for a pound of bread and they earnt 2.09 per hour on average, so 11% of an hour. people where wrong that 2020 would be a good year
1:45 "The End of All Jobs", I am honestly looking forward to that kind of leisure. Ah, if only saying it would make it so!
Honestly, it's both hilarious and insulting to say that apes drive better than humans, much less the potential near-term future self-driving cars that have no steering wheels.
The problem with predictions like this is that people always assume either linear or exponential progress, when in reality that isn't how it works. Ideas, goals, and plans change all the time. In 1970, it was perfectly reasonable to think that we would land on Mars or even a moon of Jupiter by 2020, after what they had just witnessed with our moon. However, they were predicting 50 years of linear or exponential progress towards that goal. What we really got was 40 years of stagnancy with about 10 years of "Yeah, I guess it would be cool of we sent a rover."
Because human emotions, hypes and trendings, imaginations and ambitions are ever changing and it's always eternally changing so predicting future from each event to another will be harder due to a lot of black swans that we don't even notice.

The hypocracy of irresponsibility is running high here, along with the remarks of "*seize the memes of production*".
1:02 "The use of well-trained apes as family chauffeurs might decrease the number of automobile accidents". I could barely finish typing that quote; my hands were shaking from laughing so much.
cheers.
Yes we are worse off than the 1960s. Now let me finish this comment using this device in my pocket that can retrieve almost all of the information in the world.
Fetus well said
I will look at books while not owning a house

I remember that infamous photo of a young sharply dressed speculator holding that sign saying "$100.00 WILL BUT THIS CAR, NEED CASH, LOST ALL ON THE STOCK MARKET" Looks like he is talking on a smartphone.
Well we have Internet, Virtual reality, not bad A.I like Alexa etc, we are on our way to go to Mars, we are going to have a moon base and moon space station, we HAVE an earth space station, and many other things Elon Musk is working on
One of the things great in this year is that Elon Musk is restarting the space race
Elon Musk always deliver his promise LATE
Apart. From the internet and smart phones, computer games and payment cards life really hasn’t progressed as nearly as much as one would expect from say for example the 80’s.
Human progress has significantly stagnated, the exponential growth many knew didn't keep its momentum as lomg as people thought.
Yeah.science and technology is advancing slowly.
I thought Howard stark told us cars will be flying in a few years and he said that in 1942
here's my predict
2030: All lives matter
I'd say those robotic arms are far more complex and useful than sheet metal Steve
What is the background music for your ending credits? I really liked it.
1910: people from 2020 will have flying cars"
2020:teaching people how to wear mask*
Even if we could robotically get all needed nutrients, eating is FUN
Ok
There was one house that had an ape serving in it in 2020. It was at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. in Washington, D.C. But the owners were not pleased with the ape's work, so they got rid of it on Jan. 20 of the following year!
We really did love slaves back in the day huh lmao
It's kinda sad how some predictions fell short because they put too much faith in human altruism.
one thing we didnt predict: covid
1:57 "People today are generally less well-off than they were in 1966." What a silly statement. I love when cheeky lies like that are just thrown in the mix.
Consider how the poorest workers would have lived back then.
True. Like, sure the minimum wage technically went down, but still...
The poorest workers probably lived better back then because the minimum wage was higher.
This video aged ironically
very ironically
"It's evolving just backwords"

Obed Badu bruh
LOL it was funny how the one robot had the daft punk tron helmet on
The next decade starts next year, only the 2020s started now.
a_traktor13579: Yes we have started a new “named” decade in that we are now out of the 2010s into the 2020s. But we are still in the second decade of the new millennium until next year.

Ahhh yes, the 60s. The years before suply side trickle down economics.
The optimism..
i knew that 2020 was gonna be a bad year since 2019
It always takes longer than you expect, even when you take into account Hofstadter’s Law.
